I haven't seen a bad Oishii film yet, and I would include Avalon to that pile o' goodness. It might have had a better reputation if the American release wasn't so throughly botched.
The R1 Miramax release included additional narration to english dubbed version (and the only theatrical showing the film ever got in NA) to help "clarify" all the purposeful unexplaned stuff in the movie. The DVD kept the superfluous narration even if you watched it in the original Polish language, which meant that you would occasionally see unvoiced subtitles hanging in the air, explaining shit that was already kinda obvious unless you were a complete dullard.
Its a shitty treatment of what I thought was a pretty dang good film. I know, thematically, Oishii very often plays the same couple of notes in every film, but he plays them so well, and with so much style, I don't really care.
