When does it come out?

I'm sure it will be horrendously bad, but I'll still watch it. Definitely needs a live action Harlock cameo.

edit: December 2010 release?

It was announced in July, two months after Star Trek came out, so that wouldn't be surprising.

It's from the director of Returner, though. :-\

I saw that movie because Takeshi Kaneshiro's character with a trench coat was a character model in The Specialist mod and I would always use it.

that's a safe bet, as also to probably why its using its international english title even in its home market.

However, live action manga/anime adaptations have been on the upswing in Jappyland over the last few years, the Death Note and 20th Century Boys films were all big, big hits.  As was Dororo, Yattaman, Crows 1 and 2, and even that fucking terrible Dragonball movie did decent business in the rice-eating parts of the world.

Eventually we'll start getting live action mecha films, and man, that's got some nice potential there.

I saw it because the trailer made it look like "OMG GIANT ROBOTS THAT TRANSFORM INTO JETS AND FIGHT AND STUFF!!" and this was before Transformers killed my desire to see giant robots fight.

That could be good, but Oshii really needs to stick with animation.

Avalon was pretty cool during my total weeaboo phase in college, but I watched it again recently and realized how laughably bad it is.

I haven't seen a bad Oishii film yet, and I would include Avalon to that pile o' goodness.  It might have had a better reputation if the American release wasn't so throughly botched.

The R1 Miramax release included additional narration to english dubbed version (and the only theatrical showing the film ever got in NA) to help "clarify" all the purposeful unexplaned stuff in the movie.  The DVD kept the superfluous narration even if you watched it in the original Polish language, which meant that you would occasionally see unvoiced subtitles hanging in the air, explaining shit that was already kinda obvious unless you were a complete dullard.

Its a shitty treatment of what I thought was a pretty dang good film.  I know, thematically, Oishii very often plays the same couple of notes in every film, but he plays them so well, and with so much style, I don't really care.

edit: shit, Oshii.

I might put Avalon above the first Urusei Yatsura movie, but not any of his other animated films. There's just something about Avalon, it feels kind of cheap and bland. I don't think it's just an Oshii problem though, a lot of big budget, CG-heavy Japanese movies feel that way.

Oshii's animated movies have so much more style and character to them.

It's the opposite for me.  The original Ghost In The Shell movie was boring as hell. I fell asleep the first time I watched it.  Innocence is the one I kind of like (emphasis on "kind of"); saw it at a movie theater, but I have no desire to ever rewatch it.  The fanboy in me also hates that they didn't draw the characters Shirow-style.

I don't get why Ghost In The Shell is the one Shirow manga that got big movies and a TV series made out of it (years after the comics were released).  Appleseed, Dominion Tank Police, and even Orion are so much better.
