Budget?  You can build a somewhat reasonable rig for ~1k or go hog wild and do >1500

Get a 5970 if you can (they are hard to find still), otherwise; two 5850s in CrossFireX is comparable.

If budget REALLY isn't an issue, there's always the Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115212&cm_re=core_i7-_-19-115-212-_-Product

But the 960 is like 98% as good for 2/3 the price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115216&cm_re=core_i7-_-19-115-216-_-Product

I'm gonna try to be somewhat reasonable with this build.  You could spend 5 grand and get marginal improvement, but it really isn't worth it

Processor - Core i7 920
Motherboard - ASUS PT6
Memory - 6 gigs Corsair RAM (You might want more memory since you are doing video editing though.)
Graphics - ATI 5970 (kinda rare right now though, you might want to Crossfire two 5870s instead.
Storage - 2TB hard drive.  You will also want a solid state drive for your OS.
Power Supply - Corsair 850W
Case - Cooler Master full tower case
And then some random DVD drive

The total cost is like ~2200 USD before  you get an OS.  I'm not an expert or anything so take my advice with a grain of salt!  You probably wanna get Frag and Eel to contribute, too. :P

As far as mobos go, I've had really good luck with both ASUS and Gigabyte and wouldn't use any other brand at this point.

You are made of money, so get at least a 940. Everything above that is kind of pissing money away, comparatively.

I'd get at least 8 GB, 12 if your mobo supports it. At /least/ 850W.

A solid state OS drive is a good idea, I want that on my next build. G-Skill makes a good one.

I think that in CrossFireX, two 5850s and two 5870s are comparable. Since the 5850 is $100 cheaper each and more widely available you probably want to go with it. Alternatively, just track down a 5970 and save yourself the trouble.

BTW, this almost goes without saying, but you'll need to be running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 to take advantage of over 4 GB RAM ;)

I just found that out yesterday when considering going from 4 to 8 gigs of ram.  I'm on Windows 7 32  :'(

all of the above are excellent suggestions, if you want to build a rig that will blow your testicles off when you touch the power button smooth groove's your man there

dcharlie, can you be clear here

You can build an amazing, balls-to-the-wall, kick-ass machine with top-of-the-line, just-released parts that decimates and destroys anything it touches for $2000-2500.

Or you can build one that's 5% faster for $6000.

So, when you say "cost is not a factor," do you mean it in the first or second way?

I'd say the important part of a desktop PC is to make sure it's easy to upgrade in the future.  Realistically, unless you play to go crazy with several monitors or get into 3D gaming, a beefy rig is overkill.  The reason why my current PC annoys me is because I didn't think far ahead when putting it together, and now I'm limited in what upgrades I could make and it is ending up easier (and cheaper) to build a new one using some parts from it.

And reading up on an ssd for myself, that seems worth it despite the small storage space.   I'm thinking about installing the OS on the ssd so it's speedy for all normal applications then have a secondary larger hard drive for games, large storage, etc.

I have a i7 920....it will do everything you need to do and more. I believe the socket LGA1366 gets the new Intel Gulftown processors when they are released. The only downside to the i7 is the heat....you gotta get a giant goddam heatsink to reign that fucker in.  My temps are ok now, but in the summertime the i7 920 gets hot.....hell, the entire x58 chipset on my Asus P6T stays ridiculously hot.

The important thing that you must get for your build is an ssd.  If money is no object then you really need to get the ssd....it is the single biggest upgrade you can make for a system and any new system that you are building should have one.  The Intel X25-M is the one you need.

Archie4208 has a pretty good list for you. I'd substitute some Mushkin Redline over the Corsair as it has much better timings. I also prefer Lian Li cases and Antec power supplies but PCs tend to be personal affairs especially if you build your own so I won't quibble about it. My strongest recommendation would be to get an i7-920 as he suggests since they overclock well and spending more now when the six core Gulftowns are just around the corner is a bit foolish. The Gulftowns will be pin compatible with the i7-920 so the upgrade will be an easy swap. If you're going to do some serious video and photo editing you should consider 12GB of ram for you rig

It was pretty leet at the time (which was when "leet" was not yet ironic) but I have no idea how much it cost now. Maybe 40,000 yen? It was a lot but I remember thinking it would be the only case i'd ever need :rofl

It had some really nice features - a slide out section for the motherboard housing, for example. It was my first attempt at building a PC so I appreciated that for sure.

HOLD ON

wait until mid-january for the core i9 -- 6 cores, 12 threads, and one hard throbbing shaft of pure computational performance sure to plumb your gamepussy deeper and wider than you'd ever hoped for. console warriors will screech shrill notes of fear and desire when you slap their sweaty faces with that hog.

beyond that, get a radeon 5970, pile on the ddr3 ram, get a 160gb ssd for your boot/os and game installs, plus a 2tb seagate barracuda for file storage and everything else

I thought SSDs only marginally affected gaming performance, at least that is what I read online.  I know it is a night and day difference with the OS.  I would just imagine it would be a hassle to manage your games if you have >15 installed.

it's the same for anything write-heavy, but if the game reads or streams data, like geometry for an open world or textures like the ue3 engine does, it'll really improve performance in that area -- no texture "pop-in" or frame rate hitches when fetching geometry.

and I thought ssds only went up to 80 gigs? 160 gig seems large enough to have both gaming and OS stuff on it.  I have about 70 gigs of games installed right now and I expect to have more.  I'm guessing the price is crazy though.  Budgets suck.

yup, read a few places that suggest that buying in right now is foolish. Mid-jan will also tell me (levels of/lack of) bonus/payrise so should be timed nicely.

thanks as always gentlemens

the other issue is a lot of the high end ATI 5800+ cards are out of stock or low stock for a while.

re: SSD drive for the O/S, I've heard Win7 is really good with an SSD. I wish I'd had the money at the time to get one :'(

I also wonder how much that i9 is going to be. I don't regret my i5 though since it was the best value for money 2 months ago.
