So they are being ordered to be more like IW and basically build a campaign around key scenes borrowed from classic Vietnam movies. Unsurprising. It will probably be pretty alright, though. We'll see how popular a Vietnam war can be.

I'm no fan of Treyarch but it wouldn't be "rushed". Its had a two year dev cycle like the previous game World at War and most games that come out. World at War came out in Fall 2008.

Yeah ok I forgot that they got 2 full years of dev. AND a rock-solid engine AND rock-solid tools.

2 years seems enough in that scenario but it's Treyarch zzzzzzzzzzzzz. I never finished WaW, bored me to tears.

World at War did a lot of little small things on the gameplay side that turned me off from ever buying it. I played the beta and decided to pass. Plus it was World War 2 which I generally have no interest in ever revisiting again. And Zombi Nazi mode does nothing for me. I prefer something like Spec Ops mode.

A Vietnam era game does interest me more so there is increased attention from me on that aspect but I'll have to hear they haven't done any dumb stuff on the gameplay side for me to pick it up.

That will be interesting.

I agree with this. But Vietnam isn't popular. People don't like playing a game where they lose the war.

Vietnam is the kiss of death for any FPS genre.

Ask EA how Battlefield Vietnam did.

People said WW2 was the kiss of death after COD 4 hit and World at War dropped and it sold better than COD 4 did at launch. This game may or may not be good but I doubt the sales will have anything to do with it necessarily being Vietnam.

The sales will mostly come from the Call of Duty name itself and the good experiences that the mass of consumers have enjoyed with the brand.

man, i have zero interest in a vietnam game

too bad, i like treyarch, they supported the hell out of WaW on PC

i was kind of hoping between medal of honor or treyarch COD one of them would stick with WWII and just claim that fps subgenre for their own, there's plenty of cool scenarios which got overlooked in favor of storming normandy beach for the umpteenth time

honestly, I think WaW had the funnest campaign in the whole series.  Treyarch focuses less on snowmobile drive-by's and more on building up the tension and the ambushes.  Hopefully it has both special ops and co-op though.

The one thing that annoys me is that MW2 had such a bs cliffhanger and it probably won't be until next gen I'm guessing that we'll see the sequel to it.

man, i have zero interest in a vietnam game
why not?  It'll probably have more interesting characters than the WW2 games and the MW games but it'll still have fairly modern technology/warporn.  It has a chance of being good.

I feel like new consoles will come out by 2012 as cheap PC hardware is already more powerful than the current.  they'll probably announce the next-gen consoles in 2011 and a lot of publishers would want to push up development to the new hardware, or at least do a dual launch on both consoles.

Conker on xbox1 was sort of an anomaly

What about the PS3's ten year life?

And MS saying Natal is a relaunch for the 360 and it'll go for five more years?

Nah. Next gen won't happen for another three years or so. And honestly games have kind of hit a ceiling graphically for a while.

The only next gen console you'll see around 2012 is a Wii HD. Neither MS or Sony seem in too much a hurry to shake things up, especially when the core hardware just now hit the $299 price that the previous generation launched at.

There's some interesting scenarios in Vietnam, but as a whole if they wanted to do something really remotely epic/interesting as WW2 they should have thought about Korea, though that would have pitched/sold even worse, I'd reckon. The most interesting part of the Vietnam war from a gaming perspective is the air war and alll the to-and-fro and political/army branch meddling that went on there and how it impacted bombing operations.

They will have a lot of leeway with scenario/level design with the Vietnam setting, so that might be interesting. I've always thought Treyarch to be very competent in that regard.

Will be officially announced Friday.

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/episode-310-gametrailers-tv/65044

Leading rumors are Vietnam or Black Ops. Black Ops being a wider time period that may cover post WW 2 up to the 80's.

I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread but I'll repeat since I'm too lazy to go look. If its really Vietnam or the Spec Ops things that time period is a lot more interesting to me than WW 2. I've wanted to play a game in that era for awhile now.

I'm sort of mixed on Treyarch in general but having played World at War recently, I thought it was better than I thought it was originally although it still had some annoying issues for me.

The campaign may even have M14's since what they used that in the beginning of the war.

I wonder how they will balance grenade launchers though for the rifles/assault-rifles class.  In World at War, they just let you put on a rifle grenade but they already had the M79 grenade launcher in Vietnam and in fact that was the "Thumper" in Modern Warfare 2.  It might not be possible now to shoot off a grenade without changing your weapon first.
