Looks like Modern Warfare 2.

It does even down to the color palette which I prefer over the old World at War darkish tones. The videos and such have pushed me over. I'm getting it. First Treyarch one I will have bought since that hot mess of COD 3 (although I did gamefly COD:WaW and it was much better)

Looking forward to the video editor. Always wanted it in the COD series. Looks like it can record the entire game. Really great feature in Halo.

The PC version will have dedicated server support.  I plan to grab this on a Steam sale some time next year.  :bow Treyarch  :bow2

Yeah, that looked pretty solid. I'm pretty pleased with Treyarch. Perhaps all the shit I gave them in the past was unjust.

Nah they deserved some crap for some of their prior output. I think the entire studio focusing on one product has probably helped them out quite a bit and is a good thing.

this is actually a pretty badass collector's edition if you are into that sort of thing

Quote
As you can see above, the ultimate package (again dubbed the Prestige Edition) comes with a working RC car complete with a camera that provides TFT color video and audio to its operator. You might recognize it as unarmed replica of the vehicle seen in the game's multiplayer trailer.

In addition to the perv mobile, you'll get the pictured Black Ops medallion (not to be confused with a Medal of Honor), an exclusive Xbox Live Avatar outfit (we've contacted Activision to find out what PS3 and PC can expect as a substitute), and four co-op multiplayer maps.

I'm annoyed because the hardened and prestige edition have game content (4 exclusive co-op maps or something) that the regular version doesn't. I was happy when MW 2 didn't fall into that shitty business practice that is so rampant nowadays but this one does. If I buy your game for $60 dollars don't bone me on content for the game that I am buying.

Sure. It's just a principle thing for me. I don't mind not getting some older game, or some avatar item, or other random crap. But when actual game content for the game I just bought is held back from me, I get pissed. Especially if that content is available day one.

Although i's not quite the same, I would have bought Mafia II for PC or 360 if it weren't for the exclusive PS3 content (which is pretty content-heavy according to previews).

I think what's more likely is the subscription plan idea at least for the near future. I think even Activision isn't dumb enough yet to go full on yet in charging in that manner. I'm certain Call of Duty will eventually move to something essentially like that quake live deal. You'll get basic mp for free of course but extra maps or features will be tied to a subscription. And of course everybody will eventually adopt that online pass system used in the EA sports games to deal with the used market.

Diverging your user base between the haves and the have-nots at product launch is a failure at rudimentary marketing and economics. A map pack is essential for the multiplayer core experience and to already split that up from the beginning is undermining your game.

To be fair its the co-op stuff for this one and they'll probably have a good number of co-op maps ala Spec Ops but I hear your point. And if its that zombie mode which I don't play then honestly I don't care. Its just sort of the principle that irks me.

Bad Company 2 already has a slight schism in that regard via their VIP pass and the separation on some mp maps between a new game buyer and a used game buyer.

Oh it's just co-op? I thought you guys meant like a general map pack for the usual multiplayer modes.

That's not as bad but I love co-op so that dicks me over right from the get go.

Yeah I believe its co-op maps.

Who would have thought this? Scans of UK gaming magazine Shortlist have been posted on the internet today, revealing some revolutionary changes to the Call of Duty multiplayer formula. The most notable addition is currency: earned by playing multiplayer matches, you can use it to buy weapons, uniforms and accessories for your player. There are also several brand new gametypes which are unlike anything seen in Call of Duty before.
Customization
Customization will also play a huge part in the new Call of Duty. David Vonderhaar, lead multiplayer designer at Treyarch, told the magazine: “You can create a tag and etch it onto your weapons, so they’re stamped as yours. The option is also there to alter your sights and clip on attachtments such as flame-throwers.”
These attachments, sights and tags can be bought with in-game cash and will help to make your character ‘unique’. However, it seems likely that some elements of the traditional rank system from previous Call of Duty games will remain, given that players in the Multiplayer Teaser Trailer had ranks next to their names. It’s likely that we’ll find out more on this later tonight, at the Multiplayer Reveal Event.
‘Wager Match’
Another new addition is a Team Tactical gametype called ‘Wager Match’. When you choose to play Wager Match, you’ll be randomly placed in one of four modes: ‘One in the Chamber’, which sees players given one bullet to kill other players: miss, and they’re forced to use the knife, ‘Sharpshooter’, which sees players given a random weapon, ‘Sticks and Stones’, which involves the crossbow, ballistic knife and Tomahawk, and ‘Gun Game’ (formerly a mod for Call of Duty 4), which sees players vying to get kills with 20 different weapons: knife someone, and they move down a level.
“You gamble with your own currency, and the fear of loss is so incredibly great that it intensifies the action.” – David Vonderhaar
Team Deathmatch, the popular and ever-present gametype which pits teams of 6 against each other, will return in Black Ops. However, points for headshots and other bonuses will apparently add to the team score, encouraging players to be as accurate as possible.

Three maps were confirmed in the magazine extract: Launch and Summit have already been seen in the Multiplayer Teaser Trailer, but Radiation, set in a power station, is brand new. It was also confirmed that the rocket seen on the map Launch will indeed lift off during gameplay and 'fry anyone underneath it'.
We're sure to find out more tonight and hear confirmation of the features above. It definitely looks like Treyarch have not been content to produce a re-badged version of Modern Warfare 2, and it'll be interesting to hear the full extent of how these new features play out.
Be sure to follow our live-blog of the multiplayer reveal starting at 6PM PST. If you're not already following us on Twitter, you may also want to do that! Finally, do leave a comment or head over to the forums to discuss these new details.

I'll edit any of the relevant info in this point. They are discussing the game now.

* Combat Training is a new multiplayer mode that lets you play with “practice dummies” – bots. Has its own rank up, can be played co-op with a friend. When you are ready, you can then go online
* Create a Class -- you see your character on this screen because Park 1 has an impact on how your look in the game. If you are Ghost, you wear a ghillie. If you take flak jacket, it's shown and you take less explosive damage.
Lethal, Tactical, Equipment -- you choose. All things you throw that are lethal go on right bumper, all things that are tactical go into your left bumper.
Equipment: Camera Spike, C4, Tactical Insertion, Motion Sensor, Claymore
* Many of the new Killstreaks have some layer of player interaction -- they wanted them to be more interactive
Video of Death Machine and Grim Reaper killstreaks. Death Machine is a gatling gun. Grim Reaper is a rocket launcher Napalam Strike and our friend the RC-XD are up now
Gunship (death from above), Mortar Team, and SAM Turret -- set it up, take out the airborne attacks automatically
* Every time you play, you ear COD Points -- CP. What you used to unlock by level is now purchasable with the in-game currency. Unlock what you want when you want. Contracts are time-limited challenges you buy and get more CP if you finish them. Using any combination of stats, we can make any kind of Contracts we want, and can change them at any time. Mercenary, Operations, and Specialist contracts. Make the investment in your own play style and then get paid for doing so,
* Wager Match mode, where you can bet Cod points during a match.
Wager Match-- gample your COD points for a bigger pay day. Top 3 get da $$.

Take CP, wager them, and bet whether you are in the top three in the scoreboard for the specific match
First one: one in the chamber, and everyone just has a pistol with one bullet and three lives.
Second mode: sticks and stones where yo have crossbows and ballistic knives plus a tomahawk
Gun game starts you with a pistol, and you then gain new weapons after each kill
Sharpshooter is where everyone uses the same weapon and unlocks perks per kill  except you unlock a better gun with each kill...and lose a "level" with death instead of starting from the beginning
*  You can customize your weapon so it looks the way you want it to look -- new camo patterns, and you place your emblem on it, customize your red dot sight. Killcams reflect this so you will know exactly who shot you just by seeing their weapon. Change the color of the reticle -- red dot doesn't have to be red or a dot.
* Emblem editor – images, layers, and a background. You change the scale, move, color, rotate, all that stuff. Create layers, then purchase the option with COD points to put it on your gun
*  Xbox Live - Inside Xbox will have a video tomorrow that features theater mode.  All recent games played on live can be tagged, edited, and searched with Theater.
* Secondaries are pistols, crossbow, and launchers.
* Killstreaks do not count toward others ones.
* Equipment - Camera Spike. C4. TI. Jammer. Motion sensor. Claymore
*Perks Perk 1
Lightweight - Move Faster (Pro)
Scavenger - Pick up ammo from fallen enemies. Replenish lethal grenades. (Pro)
Ghost - Undetectable by the Spy Plane and the Blackbird.
Flak Jacket - Reduces explosive damage.
Hardline - Killstreaks require 1 less kill.
Perk 2
Hardened - Bullets penetrate better.
Scout - Hold breath longer.
Steady Aim - Increased hip-fire accuracy.
Sleight of Hand - Faster reloads.
Warlord - Equip two attachments to your primary weapon.
Perk 3
Marathon - Longer sprint.
Ninja - Silent movement.
Second Chance - Pull out your pistol before dying.
Hacker - Ability to detect enemy equipment and explosives.
Tactical Mask - Reduces the effect of flash and concussion grenades.
* Lethal Grenades - Tomahawk. Frag. Semtex.
* Tactical Grenades - Willy Pete. Nova Gas. Flash Bang. Concussion. Decoy. Willy Pete is smoke.
* Launchers - M72. RPG. Strela. China Lake.
* 50 levels per prestige
* When you sprint and go prone, you dive
* Killstreaks
3 – Spy Plane
3 – RC XD
4 – Counter Spy Plane $1600
4 – Sam Turret $1600
5 – Care Package
5 – Napalm Strike
6 – Sentry Gun $3200
6 – Mortar Team
7 – Attack Helicopter
7 – Valkyrie Rockets $4000
8 – BlackBird $4500
8 – Rolling Thunder $4500
9 - Chopper Gunner $5000
11 – Attack Dogs $6000
11 Gunship $6000

You don't know about Gun Game? You start off with the standard pistol and kills get you better weapons and you do this until you get the last weapon, which in CS:S is usually a grenade.

For what its worth I like a lot of what I read about. It really seems like they added a lot of stuff and in particular some stuff I've always wanted like the theater mode. I've been dying for that in a cod game forever. Its minor but I also like the change of killstreaks having to be earned outside of other kill streaks and apparently no stopping power which I always felt was a must have perk so it eliminated variety in setups. All those new game modes sound cool and actually tempting to try which is high praise from me considering I generally hate free for all gametypes.

Of course it all comes down to how it plays. I had issues with word at war so hopefully treyarch makes all this play as well as it sounds. But I'm quietly confident right now. Definitely putting down a preorder.

Don't give a shit about the zombie mode. Never care for any of these survival modes ala firefight or horde mode (I only liked spec ops in mw2 and how it was designed) but who knows. It might still be in there for those that care about such things. Although they did not mention it tonight. I prefer how that bot mode sounds already to any zombie stuff.

Regarding a co-op mode this was said last night.

Quote
Think last night was it from Treyarch as far as multiplayer went? Wrong. It still has an ace.The developer’s community manager Josh Olin has told Gamerzines it’s still to reveal a co-op mode. While admitting there will be such a mode, he wouldn’t get into specifics as to what it would be.“We haven’t revealed the co-op mode yet,” said Olin, speaking at gamescom.“I confirmed that part of the Prestige and Hardened Edition copies of the game is the four World at War Zombies levels playable in Black Ops co-operatively, but that’s all we announced.”He added: “As for what our actual co-op mode is that ships with the game, we’re not ready to reveal that just yet.”

So you can almost guarantee I'm guessing that is zombie or aliens whatever mode stuff.

PC version info:

Quote
After Call of Duty: World at War, we set out 3 goals for our next PC title:

1] PC gets every single game feature that the consoles get, but in a way that makes sense for PC.
2] PC gets even more features – the ones that PC gamers want like dedicated servers and more customization.
3] Keep it fun. Protect the integrity of the title through design and post-launch support.

Keep that in mind as you read through the decisions outlined below in our FAQ.

Call of Duty: Black Ops PC Multiplayer FAQ

Full feature support: Confirmed
Ranked Servers: earn XP and currency. Wager Servers: gamble your currency. Customizable Unranked Servers. Combat Training against practice dummies. Theater. Create-a-Class "2.0." Contracts. Emblem editor. Everything the consoles get. Implemented in a way that makes sense for PC (*cough* no lobbies *cough*).

PC Features: Confirmed
Dedicated Servers. New Server Browser. Dev console. /record. Customizable game modes, perks, killstreaks, classes, and higher player counts on unranked servers. Map rotation. RCon. Kick & Ban. MOTD. In-game custom Server Banners. And more.

Mod Tools: Confirmed
We will release mod tools sometime post-launch. We need to finish the game first. Then we will make sure any urgent issues are handled. Then we will begin work on tools. The extent of the mod tools package will not be known until this time.

Global Persistent Stats, Profiles: Confirmed
Your profile data is stored on servers for you and is accessible from anywhere on the internet. Stats, XP, COD Points, configs, etc.

Leaderboards: Confirmed
Yes, leaderboards - globally persistent leaderboards (i.e. NOT per-server based).

Steam Exclusive: Confirmed
Millions of Call of Duty fans are already on Steam. Their Friends are on Steam. Steam will provide the ease of auto-updating instead of manual patching. Auto-updating will also help keep the community playing together on the latest version. The Steam cloud will make your profile and configs available to you on any computer.

VAC: Confirmed
We are serious about protecting the integrity of this game from hackers and cheaters who would otherwise ruin the fun for the honest players. Used in conjunction with our own anti-exploit measures, Theater reviews, trusted servers, and supplemented by server admins with kick and ban powers we believe that Valve Anti-Cheat will be an effective solution for Call of Duty: Black Ops PC. We are committed to working closely and diligently with Valve to deal with new threats as they appear.

No “Public Server Files”: Confirmed
Many of these game features are predicated on having a trusted host or server. Otherwise these features would be wide-open to easy exploits and rampant cheating. Also, anti-cheat solutions can be significantly more effective on games that rely on trusted servers. We chose against “public server files” in favor of providing full feature support and protecting the integrity of this title. This doesn't mean you won't have customization or admin capabilities with your servers - because you will. This simply means we've partnered with an exclusive server provider.

GameServers.com Exclusive: Confirmed
We have partnered with GameServers.com as the exclusive provider of dedicated servers for Call of Duty: Black Ops. Every dedicated server for this title will be running on top quality hardware and infrastructure with excellent bandwidth. There will be a ton of official servers at launch for everyone to play on for free. If you want to run your own server you will be able to rent one at a great price (which will never go higher than $0.99/slot). They are actively adding new server locations and staffing up to meet global demand. If you don’t see your location you can suggest it here: http://www.gameservers.com/blackops/

Max Players: Not Confirmed
We have not yet finalized the maximum number of players in ranked or unranked servers. More playtesting is required to determine how high these numbers can go. This happens as late as possible in the project otherwise the game is likely to change in ways that could invalidate the results.

Minimum System Requirements: Not Confirmed
The game is still in development, and the PC team is hard at work making further optimizations. We will announce the min specs in the near future.

-----

Hopefully that answers the majority of the outstanding questions not answered from our MP Reveal coverage. There are still some questions we do not have answers for at this time, so as always, we appreciate your patience. We will have all questions answered before November 9th.

Regards,
-JD, PC Dev, & the PC Team

So for those who care about such things there is your zombie mode.

Quote
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept 29, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- Taking the wraps off one of the most anticipated features and worst kept secrets, Treyarch revealed today that the community-favorite "Zombies" is coming to Call of Duty(R): Black Ops which hits stores worldwide on November 9th, by Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI). Zombies were originally introduced in Call of Duty(R): World at War and became an instant hit. Call of Duty: Black Ops fans can combat the zombie apocalypse in up to four-player co-op gameplay.

"Zombies have been such a hit with our community that we were committed to bringing brand new zombie experiences to Call of Duty: Black Ops," says Treyarch Studio Head, Mark Lamia. "We've taken extra special care to retain the essential ingredients of our Zombie game, and have also crafted a nice surprise for the fans."

Today's news follows the announcement that four updated co-op maps from Call of Duty: World at War will be made available as part of the Call of Duty(R): Black Ops Prestige and Hardened Editions, along with the premium edition Steelbook(TM) Case, custom Black Ops limited edition medal and an exclusive Black Ops Avatar outfit.

Gamers can also experience an all new co-op game in Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer with Combat Training. Up to six players can rank up in this dedicated and exclusive multiplayer mode battling against enemy AI.

Call of Duty: Black Ops will release worldwide on November 9th. Pre-orders for the title are available now. Call of Duty: Black Ops for the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation(R) 3 computer entertainment system, Nintendo Wii(TM) and Windows(R) PC is rated "M" (Mature -- Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence and Language). Also scheduled for release is Call of Duty: Black Ops for the Nintendo DS(TM) family of hand-held systems, which is rated "T" (Teen) by the ESRB and in development by n-Space.

Additionally, fans who can't wait for the November 9th release of Call of Duty: Black Ops can hone their zombie combat skills on iPhone and iPod Touch starting tomorrow with the newest map release for Call of Duty: ZOMBIES, Der Riese ("Zombie Factory"), which is an adaptation of the popular downloadable content originally released for Call of Duty: World at War. Call of Duty: ZOMBIES is developed by Ideaworks Game Studio for the iPhone and iPod touch, based on Treyarch's console version, and now all four maps from the original game are available for $4.99 from the App Store at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

I think I'm going PC this time. I definitely would get to play it more than if I got it on the 360.

Seems like Black Ops is making a lot of nice balance changes. Among them:

* Killstreak kills don't count toward other kill streaks. So you have to earn them in a legit manner.
* Stopping power removed as a perk.
* Shotguns moved to primary weapon slot.
* Scavenger doesn't refill grenade launcher and Grenade launcher can't be used with bling (warlord).
* Flak jacket is apparently actually useful this time along with no danger close perk.
* Sleight of Hand perk doesn't effect snipers.

All good stuff imo.

My take is this.

I wasn't a big fan of Treyarch in the past but each game is an opportunity for a company to take a big step and up their game. Black Ops from all the info seems like they have upped their game.

The true test as always will be how it plays but so far everything they have shown gives me confidence which wasn't the case in the past with them.
