So they actually went all the way and ripped off the whole storytelling bit from Black?

Yep. Except they actually made it good instead of the dogshit from Black.

Completely different games imo. They scratch completely different itches regarding MP.

People are tying to run the thing on 5 year old systems with less than 3 gigs of RAM. They're also connecting to Multiplayer servers with pings of 200+ and then bitching about lag.

maybe your definition of fine is different than mine. i'm running the game maxed out and i'm getting drops to 24-30 fps on the very first shoot out. MW2 ran maxed out at 60fps locked the entire time and looks better than BLOPS (first level at least). friend of mine says he's running it on just high with some settings turned down and he's getting 40-60. sorry thats not running well. pretty obvious its poorly optimized and a pretty shoddy pc port.

Galil is a pretty good assault rifle. Fires like an SMG but the recoil is much better than typical assault rifles that fire that fast.

Also figured out what my problem was with missing a lot. My sensitivity was too high. I played Modern Warfare 2 on like 7 or 8 and I just immediately upped black ops to the same value but for some reason I can't control it as well that high in this game. So I bumped it back down to like a 4 and that feel much better and I'm missing my shots less.

Still frustrated with the matchmaking in general. Far worse than MW 2. Lots of disconnects or not being able to find games especially in parties. Game needs lots of patches on that front.

I prefer the Battlefield series, but CoD is pretty decent for quick arcadey fun.  With BF you feel like you're working towards a goal at all times, and you get a sense of accomplishment just from simple actions like dropping ammo or health packs.  You actually have a bit of time to think about what you're doing and plot out a little strategy with your squad.  With CoD you tend to feel like you're just seeing how long you can run around before someone takes off the top of your head.  But it has attack dogs.

Yeah that's what I meant when I said Treyarch for some reason misses obvious scripting clues unlike IW. There are some great missions in the game but a few of them have poor (or no) directions like that one outside of vague clues.

You have to go up to one of the barrels filmed with napalm and kick it over into the trench. If you advance enough on the left side one of your AI partners does it to one of the barrels and you have to do it to the other one.

Hey, what stick sensitivity do you guys use? Also, any videos out for black ops that go over some tips on how to be better? I

As I mentioned earlier I immediately bumped it up to like 7 or 8 but I couldn't handle it like I could in MW 2 for some reason so I bumped it back down to 4. I was missing way too much with it up higher so I would suggest playing with a relatively low value until you feel more comfortable.

I would also suggest using one of the better smg's if you aren't already as I think those are good beginner weapons and I think this game in particular favors SMG's.

Sea Nanners is a pretty good player and has a few tips here. But mainly I think it comes down to realizing COD is always about who sees who first so that should govern how you move about the map. It's not like Halo where the battles begins once you see each other. In COD the battle is over when one person sees the other person first. So I think the mistake a lot of new people make is that they play too aggressive and too fast and run into the middle of the map. And the worse they start doing the more they start pressing and repeating the same mistakes just more quickly. I think it's better to increase your pace as you feel comfortable rather than just pressing to be pressing. Also watch somebody in theater mode in your games who performs well and see what they are doing as it will give you tips. Also make sure you pick perks and guns that emphasize your play style. Like for an SMG person quick reloading or that one that helps you hip fire is very useful.

Also the gfx are really nice.  I don't know why people were complaining about them...I don't think they understand how big of a sacrifice 60 fps is.  Black Ops has visuals that look better than most 30fps shooters and it's running @ 60fps, which is insane.  The lighting, character models (faces look great), particle effects, tons of shit going on at the same time... this is an impressive game.  People are really ignorant about 60 fps games and the fact that they have to render twice the frames and content so they criticize them for not looking like Uncharted. I doubt there's more than 2 or 3 devs out there that could make a better looking shooter @ 60 fps than MW1/2 and Black Ops.  These games have tens of millions put into them...they're not budget titles.

It marks the biggest day one performance of any game, comfortably beating last year’s Modern Warfare 2 by 14 per cent in units and 22 per cent in revenue.

Yep, SP runs pretty poorly for me, drops to sub-30 fps quite often, get weird fps drops in the menus - sometimes down to 5 fps with the cursor skipping everywhere.  I'm running it maxed with medium corpses at 1600x900, which is what I run every other recent COD at and get a rock-solid 60 fps.  Turned off v-sync and still had the drops and hitches.  I'll mess around in the config file later and try some of the temp fixes people have come up with, see if it gets any better.  If you buy it on PC you're likely going to have to do some digging around to fix it yourself until there's a patch.  If you can live with that, and can wait on a patch (I am guessing there will be a SP patch within the next few days, maybe before the weekend is over), go ahead.  But don't just listen to people who tell you this is fud,  there are definitely problems right now, and there is more than a 50% chance it will run like shit for you.  As far as recent components go, my system is a pretty common build, so the bewildered dev response to the problem strikes me as very disingenuous.  This is absolutely a case of "we'll fix it later, just get it out the door."

I think there was some kind of patch last night but since I don't play it on the PC platform I don't know if it improved anything. Maybe I'll download the PC version via the "usual methods" just to see how it runs on my machine as I'm curious.

That was a MP patch, which seems to have worked for most people.  I haven't tried MP yet, won't be able to until later when I get home from work.  SP still has problems according to the ragenerds on the Steam forums, but Treyarch has acknowledged they're working on it.  I got the game as a gift from a friend so it doesn't bother me too much to wait on a SP patch, but if I'd spent $60 on it I'd definitely be pretty hot about the performance.  It skips and stutters like crazy.

Oh okay. Didn't know about that. Yeah normally the COD games play pretty well on the PC since they are really console games at heart just on better hardware. PC's are generally over-powered to play them.

I remember WaW running really well on the PC when I tried it so its weird this one is much worse.

yeah, I had that problem when I played Dragon Age: Origins. my build was fucked which probably explains part of why I hated the game so much - I played a dual-wielding dagger rogue - secondary weapons weren't contributing and Rogues were using Strength instead of Agility as their primary stat for like the first 6 weeks. It's never going to go away completely - there'll always be driver issues, older hardware/OS incompatibility, etc.  There's no way around that, it's always been around.  But when it works, it's awesome.  If I had to play Fallout NV on console without using those Skeleton Key and Instahacker mods I installed, I'd be tearing my hair out.  I despise those minigames worse than any Wii minigame I've ever played.

Finished up the campaign.

My impressions remained pretty much consistent throughout. A lot of really good missions let down in some places by unclear or poor directions. But for Treyarch it was a big improvement. I really like how they tell the story with cutscenes and such. Really a big improvement for the franchise in that regard.

I enjoyed MW 2 more because it was more consistent but the highs of Black Ops are actually better than MW 2. It's just that the lows are lower because of some of the issues I mentioned earlier.

OHMAHGAH this game is so fucking good. The campaign is amazing, and the Multiplayer is awesome. I dunno what crack peeps are smoking, but I have no frame issues in single player. MULTIPLAYER on the other hand is a much different story. It's 50/50. Sometimes I get a completely no-lag server, other times I get a server with so much lag it's like watching a slideshow.

Nevertheless, this game is amazing. Campaign shits all over both MW games. Infinity Ward can suck infinite dicks for all I care. At least Treyarch isn't trying to be all "edgy" and shit. The plot's really simple and straightforward.

Beat it. 5.5 hours. Best CoD campaign in the series, hands-down. I disagree with Stoney's criticism that the lows are lower than MW2. I can't thing of a single mission in this game that I didn't like, aside from

the one where you're in the hazmat suit, fuck that stupid stage.

Everything else was fantastic, though. Really loved the presentation and pacing.

I agree, best Cod campaign I've ever played, the fact that they had the freedom to jump around a lot and do flashback missions was great.

I heard that it turns out you
spoiler (click to show/hide)
kill Kennedy, but I thought it was going to be some weird mindfuck mission, like you start doing some sniping mission in Russia or something, and then after you nail the guy the screen melts away and OH NO YOU'RE ON THE GRASSY KNOLL

In any case the story was great, and Treyarch's proven themselves as the new masters of the franchise. I'm so shocked, but pleasantly so

I've seen a number of people say its their favorite campaign in a COD game and I totally get that opinion. It certainly has some of the best missions I've ever played in a COD game. I just didn't care for a few specific parts in missions that I thought were poorly scripted. But overall I quite enjoyed it. I don't want to give the impression that I didn't like it. I thought it was very fun. And some of the missions are an absolute blast.

The prison escape bit.
The helicopter portions were very fun.
The part where they give you the crossbow.
The vietnam part before and after the boat

All fucking outstanding.

Oh don't worry, I knew where you were coming from, I was just expecting some serious lulls in the pacing after reading your post, but found nothing of that kind.

The pacing is definitely exceptional. You never do any one mission or any one thing in the game too long before you get sick of it. That's good shit. My lows comment was more directed at the points where I felt it would have been so cool to get past some of the things the first time which I didn't do in some cases because I was waiting for my cue on what to do exactly. To be fair there are only a few of those but maybe because I was enjoying myself so much they stood out even more in my mind.

Seriously. MW2 had this problem out the ass.

Dude, a friend of mine dislikes the campaign to this game because he felt the plot twist was terrible and ruined the entire game for him. I'm telling him he's an idiot for expecting anything more and he says "I'm sorry you can't have an emotional response to game storytelling". I lol'd.

:lol second mission in a row that's only made difficult by infinitely respawning enemies. It's baffling how people think CoD campaigns are anything but trash.

Watched a video and found some random area where you can get a checkpoint. yay game design

Nah, that part was distinguished mentally-challenged. Somehow you're supposed to know that you need to
spoiler (click to show/hide)
stick a knife in a barrel in order to trigger the checkpoint, even though there's a waypoint leading to the bottom of the hill.
[close]
Otherwise you'll face an endless amount of enemies that respawn two seconds after killing them. Finished it on my first try after watching a video and shaking my head.

I'll probably wind up finishing in 8 hours or so as well. No idea how many missions there are, but I figure I'm probably 40-50% of the way through by now.

As soon as you move down there,

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Woods kicks the first barrels and both him and Ed Harris yell at you until you do the rest. I play with subtitles on so perhaps it was easier for me to know what to do. Though I died a few times because that A.I. can one shot you like a motherfuck.

I... I don't remember ever doing this. What mission is this?

This one.

It's definitely a confusing part of that mission. Because if you don't sort of play it in a certain way, certain things won't happen that sort of make it obvious what to do. Especially at higher difficulty levels where you can be killed so easily that you aren't really paying attention to secondary things that are going on because you are just trying to survive.

Veteran shows problems that game has with scripting, infinite respawns and checkpoint placement.I'm curently at the first infinite respawn area(corridor) and the game has decided to teleport me 5 minutes back each time I die.So each time I have to kill like 10-15 enemies to even reach the corridor, push through infinite respawns  and pray that some respawn doesn't blast me in like 2 hits...Friendly AI is basically useless there, they just stand in my way

Funny thing is that on hardened game checkpoint me right before the corridor, now it takes me 5 minutes back.

this game is so fucking awesome online. just had some awesome matches. the barebones playlists are great if you wanna bring it down - no killstreaks, no perks, just you and your gun (lost a 5.50 k/d ratio in the last few minutes of a  team deathmatch  :().

got up to lvl 14 and sorta got my three main classes down now: 2 assault rifles classes and 1 submachine gun class.

First up I have a burst-fire M16 with reflex sight and silencer. Perks: Hardline, Warlord and Second Chance. This is my go-to class.

Secondly, Famas with extended clip and red dot sight. Perks: same as above. I change to this class when I find myself unexpectedly rushing through maps with a burst-fire M16 - not a good idea.

Lastly, the AK74u with grip attachment. Perks: Hardline, Steady Aim and Tactical Mask. Amazing indoor and short range weapon.

I also find it amazing that some of you are playing this game with aim sensitivity all the way up. Default 2 is the sweet spot for me. Even when I push it up to 3, it feels too fast.

Yeah, Ive been playing with it between 5-7 and while I do alright sometimes, I find myself missing a ton of dudes by fucking pixels and it pisses me off. I think playing at 2-3 is where I need to be. It's where Ive done the best.

Yeah that's definitely the right place to be. The higher sensitivities are indeed very twitchy and take a lot of work to get use to.

That could have been a very interesting level if done properly. I know it is kinda insensitive as Kennedy was renowned as one of our best presidents but it would have been awesome.

Have played quite a bit now. I'm at level 40 or something.

Overall very enjoyable MP. Balances out of some of the more annoying aspects of MW 2 but still keeps a lot of the fun stuff. I hope they un-nerf sniping. They really went too far in that regard. Middle distance combat in general should be buffed a bit. The automatics and the fast firing smgs can really control a lot of the maps currently. The game also needs some matchmaking patches as the party system currently is broken. Spawning also needs to be adjusted.
