Yep, unless Leno walks (unlikely despite his name being tarnished due to bad press) or NBC gets rid of Leno, Conan is done.

Well, I don't believe any of that, but we'll see.

Also, I myself wouldn't mind him going to cable.

If he goes to cable, he'll get a budget that will look meek in comparison to his Late Night budget. And I would agree, I can't imagine it lasting for long. When your options are to go out with a bang and retire from hosting with some dignity or try to limp along on a cable or Fox, then I'd take the former.

The guy is rich, he already has a production company. Become a showrunner, create something funny and inventive. Rebrand yourself. That would be the smart thing to do.

Yeah, that's why I recommend he use his production company to become a showrunner. Create and write a television show! Heck, you can do it for Fox!

You kidding? He'll get cancelled in LESS than seven months.

I agree with the idea of him becoming a showrunner. I really hope Stern shows up on the show next week.

I won't pretend to know what he will or should do. It's nice to see him going out with a bang, though.

I like him as a talk show host though, I've been watching him for nearly ten years now.  It's part of my day, to be honest.

Just as long as he continues to do something that I can watch, I'll follow him.

Look, he had an impressive run on Late Night and some great bits on The Tonight Show (he just could never piece together a great show for that slot). Guy has been doing late night television for almost twenty years. He had a good run.

I'm with Patel. He should hang it up, and if his interview with Gervais is any indication, we'll have a week-plus of compelling television until Zucker has enough and pulls him off the air. He should go to HBO and create a new show. He seems to get along with Gervais. I'd pay good money to see a comedy show run by Gervais and Conan.

Wait, are we trying to increase his ratio of professed fans to actual viewers?  Mr. Show is distilled SWPL.

NBC won't; Leno will.

The money shot:
"It seems obvious that what’s really at play here is a generation gap. A younger, more vocal, more online audience simply doesn’t like Mr. Leno’s show, which has gradually come to represent an entire pre-digital, Middle American culture that the Internet commentariat wishes would just get out of the way. Unfortunately for them, their parents are more likely to be watching television at 11:35 p.m. than they are."

Nailed it.

Conan's fans support his show by forming facebook groups; Leno's fans support his show by watching it!

Well of course that's true.  But the people who are Conan's audience are going to settle soon anyway, and fill into that role soon.

I know that seems way too hypothetical, but I feel that's the obvious flow of time.

Oh well.  He should do a podcast/radio show :hyper

My sister and brother in law had a neilson box and htey watched Conan and Craig, switching here and there, then Conan and Craig when Conan went to the Tonight Show. So, yes, white people watching Conan.

And if there is a difference in how the fanbases watch the shows, thats more a statement on the businesses being behind on advertising. If things are moving to more net based watching, whats the point of sticking to an older TV audience that is dying out? It's ignoring the trend and another example of businesses not wanting to move with the advance of consumer bases.

Why can't Nielson update their methods?  Do they take into account online views?  DVR?

Maybe some don't watch Conan when he airs, but I know a shitload of people who watch him on hulu the next day, or nbc's website.

DVR? As if people don't skip the ads.

Quote
Conan O'Brien Rating for Conan O'Brien's "Tonight Show" have surged as the dispute with NBC over the late night schedule continues. The Wall Street Journal reports that viewership is up for the show, including a 42% increase for the coveted 18 to 49 demographic.

Leno increasing the Tonight Show's ratings already.

I don't think Nintendo fans count as people, etiolate! So white people watching Conan has yet to be proven!
