I'm not sure.  The show is dragged through the mud with this whole thing and I don't think people care about the history of these shows anymore. They're seen as "Letterman" "Leno" "Conan" etc. It's mostly about the host.

Leno had to become the dumbest piece of television he could to "get his footing". People cared enough that Leno had to give up on winning the audience and go after the lowest common denominator.

All of the other late night shows are high brow?

Leno isn't funny but he obviously found his niche.  In fact, most the Late Night guys suck unless there are gold mine moments like this.  Which are pretty rare.  Letterman is only funny if there is some vapid celebrity he's interviewing.  Kimmel is only funny when he can be an outright dick to someone.  These don't happen that often.  Laughing at dumb headlines isn't much worse in comparison.

I think people are overrating the other late night hosts at the expense of Leno.  Leno isn't funny but rarely is anyone else.

I laugh quite regularly at Letterman and Ferguson.

well i can't disagree with this. look at conan's ratings in the beginning. i think that would go for any "new" host of a late night show. shit, i even watched jimmy fallon for about 15 minutes that first night.

Yeah, I agree with this.  The brand" became distilled once all the other networks realized they could do the exact same thing.  I'm not going to give a shit who the host of the tonight show is, I'm going to care whether Letterman or Leno is better at the format.  I'm surprised that the Carson nostalgia has lasted even as long as it has.  Compore to say, an SNL, which despite what people think of the show at this point, still doesn't have any competitors with remotely the same prestige.

I think this underestimates the impact of the Letterman fallout though.  I'd point to that for the Tonight Show's fall way before Conan.

No, I just don't like how smug Chipopo always come off with his superior intellect all the time, which is partly why I don't like him. I mean, I'm sure texp wasn't really talking about book smart, but somehow Chipopo manages to bring up how Conan is a graduate of Harvard, he was a magna cum laude and blah blah, like he's part of some elite group.
