i think leno should embrace his villainy and make it part of his onscreen personality, like vince mcmahon did after he screwjobbed bret hart

for instance, he could hire andy, and every now and then look over at him and gravely say "i didn't hear you laughing, fatstuff."  :lenowned

If Conan goes to FOX and still bombs in the ratings who will the Internet blame then?

I had a dream my grandpa shot Jay Leno last night. It was an accident. We (me, my grandpa, my brother, my cousin, my dad, and 3 or 4 random people I've never seen before) were staying at this hotel that Leno was at, we were having a good chat just chilling out, and we all decided to go down to the hotel's firing range (?) and shoot off some rounds. My grandpa got a little wild with the M60, and well Leno got messed up pretty good. He took 5 or 6 rounds in the leg and arm, nothing life threatening, but some pretty solid hits, and all I could think of was "Sweet, we're totally getting mentioned in his monologue tomorrow."

It seems quite unfathomable to me that someone could possibly go from being one of the most visible men in US entertainment to writing occasional articles for Rolling Stone. Don't you US folks have a gazillion channels? Aren't there half a dozen spots Conan could take over or pick up?

I guess I just don't understand US TV. Jon Stewart is the best-known of all the US presenters outside the US from what I can discern, but he seems to be a complete also-ran next to Leno and Letterman. Would starting up something like the Colbert Report really be such a disaster for Conan? Surely he'd still get paid in increments of $1 million at least?

The pay cut he'd take by going to Comedy Central would be huge, and the budget for his show would pale in comparison to his budget for Late Night. He simply could not retain his staff from Late Night/The Tonight Show, and I think that's important to him. Not to mention that I doubt he'd settle for a return to 12 AM, meaning that Colbert and Stewart would have to move their shows around.

And that's unlikely.

While both have a significant web presence and are probably more popular with the younger demographic than Leno and Letterman, their ratings are nothing compared to either. Moving from The Tonight Show to cable would be a pretty big demotion, if not the equivalent of being optioned to a foreign league if we were to use sports analogy (cable is the NFL Europe of the NFL).

His options are limited since he was last on the market, as ABC and CBS have pretty much cemented their late night programming. ABC would drop Kimmel in a heartbeat for Conan, but he'd air after Nightline and even ABC has difficulties with their affiliates airing Kimmel at reasonable hours. CBS is a non-destination because they're committed to Letterman and Ferguson, both of whom have shown they can beat Conan in the ratings.

The only major network with a possible home is Fox, and the logistics of propping him up there are not only difficult, but severely handicap his ability to genuinely compete against Leno and Letterman. He will get slaughtered.

I think if Murdoch wants him, they'll apply pressure to the affiliates and he can land on Fox. But I think that move would be incredibly shortsighted and runs the risk of damaging his already vulnerable, if not ailing career.

Welcome to Hollywood. 'dems the breaks.

Weird. It would indeed be ironic if he forced Colbert and Stewart to move their shows around; the wrath of the internet would no bounds.

So why did they even pay him all that money in the first place, if he effectively had no options? Who was NBC bidding against?

At the time, he did have options at ABC (Fox was also interested). Nightline wasn't as dominant as it is today, and the network would have had no problems bumping Kimmel. I think their preference was to have Conan on at 11:35, followed by Nightline (Kimmel gets dumped).

Some say CBS was interested too, but I think that's poppycock.

But yeah, he had a legitimate shot to go to ABC against Leno and Letterman. Fox as well if Murdoch threw around enough cash. But NBC thought that when Leno was approaching 60-years-old, it'd be more than enough time to pass the torch. And Leno was the guy who signed off on it. Nobody counted on this.

Personally, I would have dumped Leno. He might carry The Tonight Show for another decade (maybe), but he's getting up there. Besides, if they dumped him now, where would he go? Fox wouldn't be interested. ABC might, but he'd be on at 12:35 (or later, depending on the affiliate). How much damage could he have possibly done.

While I don't think Conan will be successful at Fox, if anyone has a chance on that network, it's him.

They'll always exist, simply because they'll have the most money to spend on productions. Stuff like Lost and 24 and such couldn't exist on basic cable.

HBO has already spent $50 million on the pilot episode of a Scorcese-directed series! :o

HBO will pony up for miniseries, which they can then sell at a premium, and only if they can get other partners in on the financing. It's not the same.

And unless you're Spielberg or Scorcese, they won't sink that kind of cash in it.

Sums it up perfectly. I remember reading an article that Fox offered Conan an 11 PM late night show back in 2004 (when his NBC contract was about to expire). Things are much different now, however.

Yeah, Rome was co-financed by the BBC, and Band of Brothers/The Pacific are being buoyed by Dreamworks.

Yeah, HBO can finance some stuff, but they don't have very deep pockets. Especially in this economy.
