Dead Space = wow
« on: January 09, 2010, 07:05:31 PM »
I'm sorry for trolling you before, just to spite Willco's hate for RE5.

But you're actually good. The whole "go do this menial task" thing is stupid and the fact the  main character doesn't talk is retardo, but the shooting, horror and survival gameplay is top notch. Hopefully the game gets more varied enemies soon though. So far, at least, it appears to be the perfect mix of action based RE4/5 gameplay and actual survival horror gameplay. Unlike the recent RE titles, however, this does not neuter its horror roots.

The limb removal feature is such a refreshing change for survival horror combat.

And to think I put off on playing this due to the crappy demo.

The biggest AND best buttholes in any game.

Yeah the Dead Space demo can lick my nuts.  They should've just put out the first 10 minutes of the game instead of the random later section they put out.  Gives you no context whatsoever.

Love me some Dead Space.

I didn't mind the constant orders since I just followed the line on the ground and shot anything in my way.  A very simple but beautiful game.

It was hard as fuck to kill monsters with the flamethrower though.  You would think that if you make it the one weapon that you can't use in a vacuum that it would then be really good everywhere else.

Agreed although no demo would have saved that game. Most people (myself included) had written it off because Americans generally suck at doing survival horror and none of the pre-release material looked that enticing. The game had zero buzz going in.

The second one is a different case. There will be a lot more hype for it and probably bigger sales (not mammoth but at least better than the first) based off the quality of the first game.

I think you'll like it through and through.  I had a lot of fun with it.  Fairly simple action game but the weapons are really satisfying with the dismemberment and the atmosphere/plot is better than expected.

I actually liked being directed around rather than just left to explore the ship alone on my own.  I thought it gave it a sense of urgency like you need to get this done now go go go.  Instead of if there was silence and you were all alone on a ship just walking around at your own pace exploring and killing monsters.

Though, yeah, sometimes it was a bit ridiculous.

I prefer being given a goal, and then solving puzzles to continue through the game RE/SH style. It already has a pretty good goal: find Isaac's woman and get the hell out of there.

I HEART the spaceship setting btw.

What puzzles?

Dead Space is decent, but it's seriously overrated. Looks great, sounds great, boring to play. It felt like a chore less than halfway through the game.

There were at least a dozen different enemies and every time you had to fight a regenerator was like a mini-boss.  A lot of the enemies also get stronger variations over time but the most interesting thing to do was to try and kill them more efficiently.  Using stasis and kinesis rather than bullets when you could.

I was already laughing by the time I hit "fire-shooting rape factory" so I ended up snorting.

I've had a hard time going back to Dead Space. I only got to Chapter 3 or 4, and set it aside for... something else, I can't even remember what took priority. It's pretty, the controls are good, the sound design is faboo, but it's ultimately very scripted. For some reason Condemned is a lot more scary, possibly because the modern-day urban environment is more familiar.

Dead Space isn't scary and anyone going into it thinking or wanting it to be scary are going to be disappointed.  I know they've marketed it as horror but in the end it's no more frightening than Bioshock (i.e. not at all). It certainly isn't anywhere near Condemened on that level.

Dead Space is like a homage to movies like Event Horizon and Alien (the original), and does an amazing job with it.  Best new IP this gen, imo.

I had some troubles with "ooh, scary" moments in the very beginning of Bioshock. The opening sequence was honestly pretty damned scary, as was the first time you get chased out of the entry area by (implied) hordes, and then a good portion of the medical wing. But dilapidated hospitals are pretty much AUTOMATIC FULL-ON HORROR for me no matter where I see them, so it had an advantage. After that there was nothing particularly scary, though I felt twitchy every time there were pre-existing corpses in a room, such as a family dead, arranged around their sofa. Other than that, yeah, System Shock 2 was a lot more consistently scary.

Condemned, on the other hand, I've never been able to play past the first half hour because the sound design freaks me out so badly. I think if I had an actual Surround Sound setup, I'd end up peeing my pants.

For some reason or another System Shock 2 did nothing to me.  I was prepared to be shitting in my pants but in the end it was just another game for me.  But Condemned...lol I know what you mean.  There's a level in Condemened near the end where you enter the house of the killer and you can hear shit running around upstairs and down in the basement and then they're giving you orders to go investigate it and I kept thinking to myself "fuck that!"

And if you want another completely freaky display of sound design, check out Thief 3: Deadly Shadows and make it to Shalebridge Cradle.  Still one of the very few moments a videogame has ever really disturbed me.

System Shock 2 did a few things which kept the suspense high, but I can only remember one point where I'd thought I'd cleared an area and ended up turning to face something dark and chittering which wasn't there a moment previous. In my head, I thought "turn, raise the shotgun, fire while retreating" and planned to enter all those key and mouse movements, but I was so immersed everything half translated into the real world, so I stood up, knocked over my chair and threw my mouse across the room. Good times.

Another game that gets me is Fallout 3. Creeping through the wastes, or someone's house at night, kinda freaks me out.

But Condemned, I dunno, I've got to give it another shot. I should stop playing it with headphones.

Fallout 3 could definitely get a little creepy at times, which is one of the many reasons why I love that game so much.  Hope they can continue that feeling with the sequel without having to resort to dogs jumping out of fucking windows to deliver the goods.

the expansions do a pretty good job of making you scared of the wastes again between the crazy powerful inbred hillbillies, ghoul reavers, and giant albino radscorpions

Yeah, the god feeling is definitely a problem with Fallout but it's an RPG so it can be forgiven for that, but the first time you play and you're some low level scrub with nothing but your vault jumpsuit on and some crap pistol with a handful of ammo and you're wandering around the wasteland at night or in an abandoned factory without the radio on or really any idea what to expect.....man, that could get tense

Fallout 3 was definitely creepy when I first started.  The world is gigantic and you're having a hard time fighting of bandits and monsters that rush your ass.  I'm glad the enemies don't scale to your level, but I would have liked to just seem strong, not invincible.  I remember having to run away from some enemies early on.  Kinda makes me want to play the game again.

That game really hit its stride when it forced you to descend into the old subway network. My latent claustrophobia flared up like crazy when I had to take out some bum bastard three levels down, in narrow tunnels. Heavy shit.

Dead Space is more just plain dread. They use some cheap but effective tricks to make you jump, but it never made me uneasy the way that Condemned did.

It wasn't scary, just unnerving. I don't think I've ever experienced "scary" in a game, or a movie, and the only other game that has made me feel genuine dread and panic was AvP2. Condemned was all atmosphere, and it really felt expertly designed around that. Monolith knows its shit, so I don't know what in the hell happened with Condemned 2.

I meant that the mannequin part actually got me with a jump scare.  Before that, the last game to scare me was the demo to Nosferatu something on PC when it bugged out and I fell through the floor into a room filled with enemies.  Even before that, it was the demo to Black Hack Down on PC, and what made me jump was a bug crawling on my computer screen that I thought was part of the game (had night vision on and all I saw was green and black)
