Mr. Rogers Appreciation Thread
« on: January 12, 2010, 07:12:16 AM »
Posted on GAF but evilbore needs one too.

Could not resist watching more and more videos of him and his show after the best tv show theme thread.  What an amazing person - there will never be enough appreciation threads for him.

Found this nine-part gem on youtube: :D

I miss that show so much.  :(

Edit- Thanks for the heads up, Ichirou.  Link fixed.

What an amazing life.  Hearing him go off on stories is probably my favorite part of this interview.  Seems like someone you'd sit and have tea for hours with.   :)

I could listen to him speak for hours, really.

This is a wonderful bit of history:

Quote
In 1969 the US Senate had a hearing on funding the newly developed Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The proposed endowment was $20 million, but President Nixon wanted it cut in half because of the spending going on in the Vietnam War. This is an video clip of the exchange between Mr. Rogers and Senator Pastore, head of the hearing. Senator Pastore starts out very abrasive and by the time Mr. Rogers is done talking, Senator Pastore’s inner child has heard Mr. Rogers and agreed with him. Enjoy.

I used to watch the show nearly every day. Even now, if I were to flip through tv channels and see it on, I'd stop and watch.

Amazing show, amazing man.

He is a product of good nurturing, who realizes it and tries to nurture further through television.

When I heard him talk about Yo Yo Ma, I got this picture of the two of them on some crazy cross country road trip.

During the controversy surrounding the introduction of the household VCR, Rogers was involved in supporting the manufacturers of VCRs in court. His 1979 testimony in the case Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc. noted that he did not object to home recording of his television programs, for instance, by families in order to watch together at a later time. This testimony contrasted with the views of others in the television industry who objected to home recording or believed that devices to facilitate it should be taxed or regulated.

The Supreme Court considered the testimony of Rogers in its decision that held that the Betamax video recorder did not infringe copyright. The Court stated that his views were a notable piece of evidence "that many [television] producers are willing to allow private time-shifting to continue" and even quoted his testimony in a footnote:

Agreed.  Trolling or not, you have to draw the line somewhere.  Though I guess it should be expected of evilbore.

Is this old fart really that big deal? I never even heard of him so he must be a local US "star" from the 1950s.

He was one of the big reasons that public broadcasting is still around in American and he hosted a popular kids show for about thirty years.

In a nutshell:

Fred McFeely Rogers (March 20, 1928 – February 27, 2003) was an American educator, Presbyterian minister, songwriter, and television host. Rogers was the host of the television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, in production from 1968 to 2001.

I put Borys on ignore.  The guy is obviously just mindlessly trolling at this point.

I just can't believe you guys are bashing Mr. Rogers.  If there's ever been anyone who was just a good human being, it was him.

I'm with Willco on this one.  Do all of you secretly want to share with children too?
You have to consider that this was a different, less cynical time when he was pitching it to the senate committee.  The fact that this guy tried to stem the "bombardment" of shallow cartoons with educational television probably saved us all the few brain cells and social skills that we have.

Add to that the fact that he had a genuine interest in the emotional well-being of children.  He wanted kids to be able to express and share their emotions, even ones like anger, in an open and positive, non-judgmental way.

The fact that guys here are cracking pedo jokes about a genuinely kind person who devoted his life to trying to help kids and provide an alternative to half-hour commercials for the latest action toys...just make me really disappointed.

I didn't even like him as a kid, he was too boring, but now as a young adult I really appreciate it. And if you don't know shit about him, the congressional footage should be enough. Kill em with kindness.
