Sony and Polyphony has announced that the title will not make the tentative March 2010 release in Japan. There is no new release date listed, and there are no details as to what development issues resulted in the delay. There has not been an announcement regarding the status of the title outside of Japan.

We should bet on how much this game will cost overall (not counting marketing) when it finally comes out.

Put me down for $75 million, more expensive than the aborted Shenmue saga.

Well it's a company of 120 people working for three years and they said that it's cost them $60 million to develop this game.  Obviously, it costs a lot of money to keep a company of that size operating so a 6 month delay is a big chunk of change.  Honestly though, shouldn't they have finished modeling the cars by now?

The most screwed up thing is that even though this game cost 50 times more to develop than the first GT game on the PS1, gamers only have to pay $10 more for it.

:lol at everyone saying they are adding 3d.  The game would have to be running at 120fps on PS3 to get it to 60fps 3d.
Then again it does look pretty fugly so maybe they downgraded the graphics to get gimmicky 3d?

Also Sony should kill Kaz.  He is single handledly throwing away their Q1 PS3 hardware stabilizer.

Speaking of development hell, I wonder how far along Trico is!

I always got the feeling Ueda knows what he's doing, his games just take some time.

I'm hoping we get a date at TGS this year for xmas/early next year.

At this point it's Sony's fault, not PD's.

Because they are afraid to boss around the guy who gives them millions of profit when it he actually releases stuff?
It's a tough position to be in.  Kaz is a horrible employee but he brings in the profits so you don't want to scare him away to another company.

I'm a huge Gran Turismo fan but let's be realists here; the Forza series has been consistently churning out superior games without fail. Since the release of the first Forza, Gran Turismo has been relegated to "has-been" status. I no longer see the point in paying attention to Kazunori and his embarrassing display of perfectionist irrelevance.

I believe Polyphony Digital is stuck in a quandary; no matter what they do with Gran Turismo 5 they're bested by a team that works faster and produces a superior product on a consistent schedule. The moment they bring GT5 to the level of quality of the latest Forza, the team at Turn10 cranks out yet another sequel that obliterates their hard work.

Kazunori fails to realize that releasing Gran Turismo 5 in its current state will bring the company untold millions and the fanbase will lap it up without batting an eye. Obviously it'll be an inferior product to Forza 3 but at the very least he'll show some backbone and help Sony make back all the money they've flushed down the toilet on his company. He'll lose face and will be forced to come to terms that his game and his team are no longer the kings of the genre but that's better then having his company shut down for failing to release a single game that's been in development for well over 6 years and has a cost well beyond $60 million.

but they've sold/shipped over 4 million copies already of just prologue. :smug

i'm not sure what sony gets per title, but i think they've earned back enough of that $60m already to tide them over till 5 comes out.

Great news everyone, Kaz is starting everything again from scratch such is his genius!

he apparently had the brain wave of remodelling ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING again at super high fidelity and then downgrading the models so he doesn't have to do it all over again for when the PS4 comes out. Oh and completely rebuilding the engine... again.

This will be a further stamp on his genius 2 years from now when they are able to release GT5 in 2012 and then a tourist trophy style DLC update REALLY QUICKLY in 2016.

Might need to up my prediction to $85 million now.

I suspect GT5 is hardly being worked on.  It is clear that the bulk of GT PSP was developed in 2004 and 2005, for instance.  At this point, GT5 is better off being a PS4 launch title.  So should Killzone 3.

why release a product when you can release a "time trial" or "prologue" every 12 months and have your fans fight back with "its not a demo, the product is nearly finished"?

They added rewind a while ago after playing a Grid or Forza 3 build iirc.  Which is good because rewind in racing games is awesome even if it dumbs them down a bit.

Well I don't think Forza is the first game to have rewind, and I really doubt Kazunori Yamauchi wants the online to be all about decal trading . . .

Considering Gran Turismo is Sony's biggest gaming IP, I think the last thing they want to do is rush the development and release of the title. I keep seeing people saying it's been 5 years etc, but the Ps3 turned 3 years old like 2 months ago. So GT5 comes out in the Ps3s third year on the market.

And let's not forget; While Forza 3 performed well with critics, it was a complete disappointment at retail- specifically in North America. If you were a Sony exec and you saw Forza 3s numbers, you wouldn't have any incentive to rush the release of what may very well end up being the highest selling Ps3 game this generation.

Yeah but a lot of the success of the past gran turismo games probably was because of the market dominance of the PS1/2.  If a hardcore gamer is comparing GT5 versus Forza3, what extra features are they getting?

GT has a fanbase, god knows why. But it has one, and Prologue proves that. Some compare it to Forza I'm sure, but it has its own fanbase.

despite the 4 million units of Prologue to a relatively small user base and the fact it's established as Sony's No 1 franchise of all time, which usually propels hardware sales?

i doubt they even gave the Forza sales a second glance.

There's a TON of incentive to get this game out.

I'm not talking about general incentive to get the product out, I was talking about incentive to rush the product out.

The fanbase is filled with "casuals." It's not a new or niche franchise. I don't know if they are waiting for the game in the sense that they just plain avoid other games in the meantime (who does that?), but they will buy the game whenever it comes out.

If I were a Sony exec no doubt I'd delay that shit, implement 3D and wait till my new line of 3D Tvs come out later in 2010. A package with a PS3, GT5 and a 3DTV + shutter glasses will have a lot of guys running to the nearest Sony Style store.

This is totally ridiculous as a consumer though, but from Sonys perspective milking the fanbase with pay for demos while you make the killer app is a pretty amazing business model. Especially when the demo sells more than your competitors fully fledged games. Forza 3 is great but the brand recognition just isn't the same.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer has taken a cheeky pop at the repeated delays to the release of PS3 exclusive Gran Turismo 5.

As you'd expect, the Microsoft Game Studios boss is a big fan of Xbox 360's rival racing series. "I think Forza continues to define the racing genre," he told Eurogamer earlier this week.

"Especially from first-parties, given that it seems to be the only one that's shipped."
