Why would a magazine that is manufactured to help sell product give a game a low score? Game Informer numbers are almost always inflated in an effort to boost GameStop sales. This is just proof that the game is complete garbage.

Besides, all of GI's complaints sound reasonable if the game is poorly designed, which it certainly seems to be. What's the point of wicked stealth stuff if the levels are super-linear and the enemies (marines) braindead? And the motion tracker, how shitty must an aliens game be to make the motion tracker anything short of bloody awesome? GI has a dodgy reputation, but Rebellion's reputation is worse.

The only time they'll rate games low is if they think bro-gamers won't buy it.

There was the Paper Mario review, but the truth behind that has been pretty distorted (much like the "they didn't like the stealth wtf," which makes a lot more sense in context). Their reasoning for Paper Mario actually made a bit of sense, in a buyer's guide sort of way.

In any event, no, they are not exactly known for underrating games. Rebellion, on the other hand, is very well known for making low-rating games.

Finished with predator and marine, started alien.
Verdict...good game, they really nailed the atmosphere, kills are very satisfying, predator, marine, alien,it doesn't matter, sound is excellent. And despite that the engine is a bit outdated,it looks decent, sometimes great, lightning and shadowing saves it.
Marine campaign is probably the best one in terms of story and can be damn scary sometimes, things tend to jump on you and then disappear in the dark.
Predator feels like a badass, once you master the controls you will kick some serious ass, jump attack some alien horde, kill a few and jump to some elevated position...so good...but beware, don't let your guard down,if you want to survive have to kill without hesitation
Alien, played it a little bit, feels like an alien.
Game is polished, performs good,no tearing,no "bugs" so far...

Now to less than good aka crappy stuff
Individual campaigns are short,at least they feel like that
End boss fights are easy and badly designed
Marine gameplay feels dated,in huge locations(quite a few) he is just too slow, but nothing beats pulse rifle ripping through alien skin.
Bad cutscenes
Story is forgettable,predictable
Game features some great locations, shame that they haven't been exploited more

So,its not a disaster its not excellent, somewhere in between, game budget was obviously low, there is a hint for a sequel at the end.Hopefully it sell well and the sequel gets significantly larger budget, there is someone at Rebellion that really understands what Aliens and Predators are.

http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/aliensvspredatorworkingtitle/review.html

Quote
When three mediocre games are jammed into a single package, the result is still mediocre.

Quote
But in each campaign, the thrill wears off quickly when you discover that Aliens vs. Predator botches a lot of the basics, and what seems thrilling at first becomes downright tedious as you struggle with poorly designed levels and gawky gameplay.

Quote
You'll crawl onto some walls and outcroppings willy-nilly whether or not it's what you intended to do. You'll try to activate one of the game's super-picky button prompts and jump onto a wall instead, or wrestle with the controls and camera trying to do something as simple as slither into a vent. You'll eventually learn to wield some control over the alien's fickle movement, but even then, moving around isn't all that enjoyable. You never feel in control of an actual creature; instead, it's as if you are floating just above the ground.

Quote
Executing a well-planned attack can be fulfilling, though the game doesn't create many such moments, leaving you to make them of your own accord.

Quote
Unfortunately, irritating mechanical and level design limits yank all the fun out of scurrying around (in the case of the alien) and leaping from one destination to the next (in the case of the predator). Some levels require you to move about only in ways the developer intended. You might want to scamper up and over an obstacle, only to run into an invisible wall or ceiling; and as the predator, you can leap to certain surfaces but not to others for reasons that don't always make sense. Why can you leap 20 feet to one spot, while you can't hop over a six-inch barbed-wire fence?

Quote
Enemy humanoids will do incredibly stupid things like take cover on the wrong side of a wall, exposing their backs to you. Sometimes, their ability to notice you even when you're camouflaged borders on the magical; other times, they're all but oblivious to your presence from two inches away. Civilians even run into the corner and cower with their backs to you in the alien campaign, clearly waiting to be harvested rather than making an authentic attempt to escape.

Quote
The marine campaign avoids some of these pratfalls, instead falling victim only to its own lack of ambition. After the first excellent levels, the lights get turned on and rarely go off, and everything becomes tepid and ordinary. It turns out to be just another everyday shooter checking off the old cliches; like in so many other shooters, you're a rookie learning the ropes, guided by the voice of an unseen comrade, a device the game loves so much, it uses it twice.

Quote
The attention to detail, the well-considered level design, and the sense of momentum that characterize the finest shooters are missing here.

It's a shame that it ended up rather mediocre, but really, it's Rebellion here.  They haven't produced a worthwhile game in ages and I didn't expect that would suddenly change with this new title.  At least it seems to be better than Rogue Warrior, which was just pathetic.

To be fair, it's probably the best AvP game they've made yet as the others have aged rather poorly.  Of course, those games were better than this during their respective release time frame...

Some Swedish PC gaming site gave it a 2/5

+ Three campaigns
+ Promising multiplayer (they couldn't test it, since no one was online)

- Repetitive
- Short campaign
- Outdated (or old fashioned)

Gamespot is for losers anyway. But the game is not going to get stellar scores, expect 5-8,9 range,i am curious what the pc magazines will think of it.
Btw,i am replaying Predator campaign for the third time, there is just something magical in fighting(butchering) hordes of aliens, marines.

played a 3-person deathmatch in the multiplayer demo. Can't say much about the level design, but the match was tense - had me looking around corners for the predator, and the way the sound echoes when there is a nearby firefight is nice touch that scares and psychs you up at the same time.

Eerie atmosphere is pretty much all this game has going for it.

I guess the latest excuse is "so what if SP is buggy and sucky, it's all about MP anyway," in regards to an Aliens game. I mean what the fuck is going on.

Anyway, I've come to the realization that MMaRsu and slasher_thrasher on GAF are better reference points than any review. If either of those two are burning brightly for a game with poor or "mixed" reviews, then it pretty much deserves the lower scores.

I hammered AvsP2 multiplayer and loved it, i assume we have similar modes in this one ?

I know this is probably going to be poop on a disk, but as a sucker for Aliens i'll probably give it a whirl.

See, this is precisely why I'm staying away. I really don't think I have it in me to experience a Rebellion AvP game first hand. I also strongly recall feeling that AvP2 was a massive improvement on a buggy and slightly shitty first stab at it by Rebellion.

Anyway, so the survival mode only has two fucking maps?

A game that's "polarizing" is almost always a bad game. The group of reviewers that grade it less harshly usually ignore the obvious and glaring flaws of the title due to their blinding love for the source material, characters, or plot.

It's really not that hard to like a bad game but that shouldn't excuse poor gameplay because you happen to really like a certain spiky haired dough-eyed character, for example.
I'm loving this game for the exact above reason, I love the source material. Despite it's flaws it nails the atmosphere and feeling of the films.

Yeah it balances the game. It would be a little unfair for a single species' melee to be unblockable. That's like saying "Why the fuck can I block Zelda's sword in Smash Brothers!!??"

I played some AvP on the PC yesterday and actually thought it was decent.  It has some issues for sure, but isn't completely awful.  It basically feels a lot like Doom 3 meets FEAR 2 with Aliens, though, at least during the early marine levels.  It pretty much holds 60 fps on my PC, so it feels good.  Love the motion blur when turning in addition to all the first person body movement stuff (kind of like FEAR 2 or Killzone 2).  It does not simply feel like a rehash of the 1999 game, as I was expecting.

I can see it falling flat, however, as I was growing weary of the game after an hour and quit.  It looks really good on my Kuro plasma, though.  I kind of wonder if the visual design was wrong for a modern game, though, as it looks like dogshit on my LCD in the other room (2009 Samsung).  Shadows permeate each and every scene and the majority of displays people are using will produce poor results with this game, I'd imagine.

Haven't run into any bugs yet, which is a surprise.  It's definitely light years beyond Rogue Warrior.

Gerstmann rated it low as well, and he's an icon of honesty and integrity in gaming journalism. At least that's what people claim when ripping on Gamespot reviews these days.
The dude's Kane & Lynch video review (the one that got him fired) didn't even show anything past the 10 minute tutorial level actually.
I doubt he assembled the footage.  His achievements (for the account he used for review) prove that he played through it, however.  I'm surprised anyone would think that he played no further than the first ten minutes, though.

It is possible that he finished the game but it was still a very poor review imo.

I had a copy show up yesterday and within seconds offloaded it to a co-worker. Would prefer just to laugh at the EBers playing it.

Not inaccurate, however.  Mirrors how I felt at least.  :\
