Also picked up some Kona Brewing Co. Fire Rock Pale Ale from the local import foods shop, at 400 yen/bottle.  Tasty.

Took cormacaroni's advice and bought a cheap desktop to replace my broken down one. I messed around with Ubuntu and like it, but my wife was not fond of it and it was going to crap out at any minute because the heat sink had become detached like a zombie's eyeball.

I got the lowest-end SX series machine, seems to be booming along on its own, quiet and tiny. Not sure if the Athlon processor or lack of graphics card is going to be an issue, but it's for the wife to work and keep her out of the living room when I'm on the 360, so... YAY! 49800 yen, 3 year warranty, balls-out faster than her netbook.

...I might install Steam on it, but that might only make the pain of no-graphics-adapter more prevalent.

Man...Japanese PC prices.     I think my netbook cost less and is faster/has a much better gpu.

When I got a MacBook over there it cost a good 20,000+ more than the same model in the States, too.

iPad is my most beloved possession, dude. Not sure how you will use it, so can't guarantee you will love it similarly; I'll just say that it hasn't left my sight since it launched here.

MANGA (and some normal books), apps (I want to fuck around with music stuff), TV shows (maybe I'll watch some "good" anime, but on the real I hate anime too much to watch it on my iPad), newspapers, etc. When multitasking comes out I'll probably use it for AIM, etc. too.

Please give me tips on how to maximize my iPad enjoyment!

Plenty of manga readers out there, many of them free too. It's pretty easy getting files on them with iTunes, but Dropbox is very handy for getting them on there. DL via the Dropbox app, and then open them up in your app of choice. Stanza is pretty handy as it also does pdfs and other ebook filetypes. Comic Zeal is the slickest comics app so far but not free.

iBooks is out for Asia as of right now, so i've been buying all books from Kindle (and stealing the stuff i already have on paper, mostly, where i can get a decent copy of it). Kindle also works on iPhone of course so it's really handy for reading a chapter or two on a short train ride etc. I can burn through books at a crazy rate now.

For RSS stuff, News Rack is really great.

For video stuff, Air Video is quite possibly all you need.

For news, check out the npr app, NYT, WSJ, BBC News - all excellent. And of course anything you can browse in Safari, like Google News, is all there.

If you need more than Dropbox for file transfer/sharing, Air Sharing HD is pretty useful. It has ftp and network drive access, so you can get at all your files at home (or uhh, anyone else's, if they happen to be running a FTP...). Pricey though.

That should get you started!

I splashed out and bought a new guitar amp.  I love the sound of H&Ks and it was reduced from AUD$3750 to AUD$1500 which is a pretty crazy saving.

It's touchy but works pretty well at low volumes.  I'll probably get a power soak for it.

Yes.

Damn near everything supports file transfers via iTunes now, but it's a pain in the ass. Even though the transfers themselves are speedy, every time I boot up iTunes, I now I'm going to be sitting there like a mong for at least 10 minutes. The useful thing about Dropbox is that you can just put your content in there when convenient to you (when you happen to be on your computer), then download it to your iPhone/iPad whenever you feel like consuming it. It might take longer to download over the internets but i find myself using it all the time to dl some new stuff to consume on the train home, for example. The one drawback is that a free account only gets you 2GB of space. But hey, it's free, and you get the additional benefit of also having that content available just about anywhere since you can access it via any PC with Dropbox installed, or indeed anything with a web browser installed.
