I had this old hdtv that I bought around the same time I bought my console. This was back at the 360 launch. It was cheap at the time which is why I got it. It only went up to like 720p/1080i so I finally bought some Acer 23 inch monitor recently at best buy to double as a new one for my computer and also to use it to play on the console at my desk. I had heard about monitor lag but had never really paid much attention to it thinking it was no big deal but in the back of my mind I made sure to get a monitor that had 2ms of lag which is way less than what my old one had when I looked it up. It's not an especially good monitor or anything, but it was cheap and the sales sticker said the 2 ms thing.

Man what a fucking difference. I play a lot of twitch based shooters like COD and stuff and man I can feel the improvement. I'm getting the drop on people all the time now where as before I felt like I was but it always seemed like they would kill me first. Its a small amount of milliseconds but if you play a lot of twitch style games, it makes a much bigger difference than I would have ever believed.

Technically its two separate issues at work. Input lag and response time. But in both cases its an improvement from what I went to.

You do want a fast response time but iirc the "2 ms" thing is more of a marketing gimmick than anything generally. It's possible to get a monitor with a 2 ms response time listed but still have bad ghosting and lag issues, even more so than monitors with apparently slower response times. I guess the moral of the story is to look for reviews for any specific model you want rather than just trusting that metric.

Bought a Sharp 40" Quattron HDTV the other day. It retails normally for $1200 but saw it on sale for $499.... couldn't pass that up even if I already own way too many freaking TVs. This is my first 120hz one though.

I was vaguely aware of the "soap opera" effect due to the motion processing in higher hertz HDTVs but never experienced it for myself until I brought this home. Totally bizarre. On one hand, the image quality is absolutely, draw droppingly amazing. Everything pops. I've never seen a TV this clear before. It's almost 3D-like. Seriously. On the other, the smoothing of motion and processing effects in the TV make everything seem like it was filmed on the stage of some soap opera.....an amazing crystal clear "I can see the makeup in their pores" soap opera, but still a daytime soap opera. Popped in the Avatar Blu-Ray last night for the hell of it and now everything looks completely....um....artificial.

I can't decide if I like the look or not but it sure is something to see. Everyone that's seen it so far has had the same reaction that I had. Marveling at the picture quality but also noticing how "off" it is at the same time.

Gaming on the sucker is beyond impressive though. The processing effects makes everything seem buttery smooth.

I think that effect is due to frame interpolation rather than the 120 Hz generally. There should be a way to turn it off.
