I'm hoping one of these measures eventually passes just to see how the federal government reacts. November can't come soon enough :hyper

It's pretty alright where I live right now, where possession (small amounts) nets you nothing more than a small fine. I hear it was even more liberal in the past.

California WILL legalize weed this fall. It's pretty much 100% certain at this point.

I never could get my head around the fact that I can't buy marijuana legally (not that I'm looking to) but I can go to any head shop in town and pick up an eighth of 120x salvia, no questions asked.

I guess I'm just stupid like that.

It is kinda weird when you consider the slew of other fringe psychoactives that are illegal, especially stuff that isn't easy to acquire like 2C's and DMT

Because most people don't know what it is.

this is pretty much wrong

its because once you try it you never ever want to do it again

its a pretty self regulating drug

Pot culture in the US is still generations ahead of the mentality in Sweden. Over there, weed is labeled "knark" (short for narcotic) and one narcotic is viewed as basically as bad as the next. We even had police officers come to our school and talk about weed. They lit a small piece of hasch and the police officers seriously claimed that if there had been a pot smoker in the room, his addiction would have forced him to run up and snatch the piece from their hands. And then my ever so witty classmates yelled out "watch out, this guy might make a run for it!"

But yeah, that's the mindset of a lot of Swedes, including friends of mine, one of whom visited me in the US and was aghast at how everyone toked up like it was nothing. Whereas in Sweden, it's totally alright to get blitzed on booze, puke all over the place and pick fights with anyone, two or three nights a week. Weed, now that's just criminal and clearly the ruin of society.

What about other drugs?

In my state (Iowa), the three drugs of choice are weed, meth, or oxycontin.

The first one is partaken by many but the second and third are unfortunately too common :-\

I'd been living in Japan where having a gram of that stuff can put you in prison for years or deported. Never thought it was worth the risk.

I met this Japanese chick in Dublin who freaked the hell out, and then became fascinated, when one of my friends lit up a joint. Always wondered why she reacted that way. She also went on about how I was a strong big very Swedish man, so I just assumed she (or her translator friend) was distinguished mentally-challenged or something.

Yeah. Almost anything drug-related (except for certain types of mushrooms) equals "OH MY GOD IT'S A CRIMINAL" They recently caught some Japanese celeb with something ridiculous like 1g of meth and the Japanese cops and the media pretty much crucified her. Total witch hunt -- they brought her boyfriend into it too and it just got craaaazy.

edit: By the way, if you fly into Singapore or Malaysia and you're carrying any weed, they hang you

It was her husband, actually, who was apparently also her contact with her supplier. :lol

Also, apparently her apartment was a shithole and had more drugs in it.  This is a celeb who had made a bunch of anti-drug commercials and even an anti-drug movie or something, so that's also part of why it was such a big scandal.

That's probably one of the reasons why Himu is rejecting his previous japafaggotry - he knows if he moved here he could never get his "fix." :lenowned

I saw this on the news... it was hilarious.  Some guy wearing a weed beenie at an open forum talking into a mic, saying, "Pot is an herb."  Then some other crazy looking characters were shown speaking--one guy had a weed eye patch on.

My first thought was, "LOL they really brought out the big guns--these guys command my respect."  Then it went to an opposition speaker who was in a respectable suit and tie.

Fuck Oxycontin, it has RAVAGED my hometown.

My hometown (it's a mix between upper-middle class/wealthy, and 90+% white) is currently experiencing a heroin epidemic. Painkillers are also pretty big here, my cousin's b/f died a few years back from ODing on Oxycontin.

That's the problem with these guys.  Their PR sucks ass.  Just a bunch of fucks in a drum circle.  I agree with them in principle but I'm not going to fucking stand next to some Phish listening, Evergreen College undergrad named Energy Turtle.  I'm almost inclined to disagree with them just from an automatic internal response.  I got to fight my urges.

I'm all for pot being legal but I fucking hate the culture that it spawned.

I hate the pot culture.  I've smoked weed a few times and I agree 100% that it is a PR problem.  All kinds of normal people smoke marijuana but the pot subculture ensures that it will remain illegal for some time.

I heard OC addicts eventually switch to heroin because it is a much cheaper high.

No, because there is a very sophisticated culture of squatting. My hometown is where most of the Oxycontin for this whole region is trafficked into. 3 people are responsible for trafficking 500,000 pills/week, and that's just within the city limits of a town of 5,876. It's a much bigger business here than it is where you live, good sir. Kentucky has more people addicted to Oxycontin than Ohio and Michigan combined. Ten years ago, Ohioans did not know about oxycontin, whereas in 1999 people were in rehab by the thousands for OC in KY. Ohio has us beat on all the other hard drugs, but we STARTED the current OC epidemic.

Same.  I usually volunteer as an election officer and if there ends up being a ballot measure for this in California, I (unfortunately?) expect a lot of first-time voting stoners to come in.
