Wouldn't Brits say iPod and iPad the same way?  Won't that get confusing?

what.

Am I wrong? I'm American; what do I know?

All it is pretty much a reader device. Without multitasking or Flash support, it's not even a smartphone replacement. I'm saddened to see Comacaroni is such an Apple lemming. This isn't even a cool product like the iPhone or a sexy MacBook.

jinfash conveniently quoted my pre-announcement list of reasons for wanting JUST a swank reader. I've wanted a Kindle for ages but held off because of the lack of color and ....and other features, plus the impending iPad announcement. I've also made it clear that I'm still capable of being swayed by a Tegra2 device, especially if they hit the market before the iPad hits Japan in June.

but yes, the iPhone is the best thing ever and it has made a drooling idiot of me to an extent.

The only thing I can see that the iPhone has over this are the games. We don't have much on Android yet. Also the internet is a bit faster on the 3GS.

my friend pointed out that the people who are viewing the object from what Apple tells us the device is ("netbook killer") hype are the ones raising both eyebrows in suspicion, and the ones just looking at is a high-res, color eReader ("Kindle killer") are the ones who are super hyped.

I can see that. But it's too important for me that my color eReader/portable media player be more codec/DRM neutral and allow me to view my existing library, legal and otherwise. The idea of a media device I can only sync over USB in iTunes is naff as all hell.

On the otherhand, multitouch digital musical instruments on a screen that large are gonna be sweeeeeet!

Yeah when I think of the device as an eReader that can also play movies/music, it sounds pretty appealing.

no, it was a RL friend who really wants one. you and he are the only people I know who think the iPad is a good idea, and you're both looking at it from the perspective of a Kindle-category killer. from that viewpoint, I can see the iPad being extremely desirable - though things like the closed ecosystem and 4:3 screen still make it DOA to me.

It costs like $10 more than the Kindle deluxe. That's obviously the market Apple is going for. We only started hearing rumors of a tablet from them after the Kindle starting kicking ass in a brand-new market.

A netbook has more features and is cheaper but it won't work for the single thing i want a tablet for: reading on the train during my 2hrs of daily commute time.

on my 15.6" laptop which is 16:9, when i rotate the page there are black bars at the top and bottom of comics pages because CDisplay shrinks them to fit the screen, it loses a lot of screen real estate

i also printed up several comic pages last night sized to the screen of the ipad, and almost all of them took up the full height and width, even modern stuff

comics themselves aren't 16:9 sized when turned on their sides, especially golden and silver age comics - which were more akin to the squarish dimensions of a magazine

for a high res large computer monitor, yeah, i'm sure it looks great and you don't really notice the blank pixels at the top or bottom, but 9.7" at 1024x768 resolution screen space is a necessity

Jobs said a lot of stupid shit, as usual.

Man, June is a long way away.

@Patel: what content do you envision being a problem on the iPad? Apart from the hassle of transcoding video (which is basically one click, it just takes up CPU time), I haven't had any issues with the iPhone.

on a 23" high res screen it's not a big deal, but on a 9.7" that would be a lot of lost space

I do love the space saving aspect of e-readers, but I just vastly prefer flipping pages.  I'm not a pack rat. I tend to edit my shelves yearly, giving away books to family, friends, or donating them the public library.  I also use the public library a lot as well.

I've got no need or desire for Apple's Kindle 2.0 but I just jailbroke my iPhone the other day and now it's like having a whole new device.  I should've jailbroken the thing right when I got it...the thing is awesome.  Not that I really want to watch movies on the thing, but now I can open up the unlimitedvid app through Cydia and stream or download shit like Avatar, Lovely Bones, Legion, The Road, The Book of Eli, etc with the touch of a button and all for free.  It's pretty fucking cool.

Considering Tegra 2 has 10.1 Flash support, and other tablets (like Compal) have it up and running, I highly doubt any Android/Tegra 2 tablet will ship without Flash support.

android doesn't currently run flash, and haven't set a firm date as to when it will be available

atom processors handle flash like dogshit, even low-res youtube stutters, so i hope the slate is packing a little something extra

i'm sure these comparisons will be updated later - again, "what's known so far"

As far as eBooks, I don't really care for any of them except the Nook, and when B&N manages to fix the speed issues, I may bite on that one. Otherwise, I don't really see the appeal in these things.

Huh? The HTC Hero has supported Flash, and several Android/Tegra 2 devices were shown off with Flash support (Compal's tablet comes to mind). Flash 10 support has been in beta on Android for awhile.

Damn, even Nintendo hates it!

Quote
Nintendo boss man Satoru Iwata made no effort to hide his underwhelming opinion of Apple's new iPad.

"It was a bigger iPod Touch," he said, following the revealing of the new gadget earlier this week and the internet-conquering hype that surrounded it.

"There were no surprises for me," he said later in the interview (AP via NY Times).

So, I heard that NVidia had to send 10 engineers to Adobe for 8 months or so to get Flash running on Tegra2. It's not a trivial operation. My buddy there thinks there is no way it'll ever run on the ARM chip in the iPad (or the iPhone). He is obviously teh bias (although he's a fan of iphone, and has a Touch as well).

Somebody on the radio mentioned that iTab is a better name, yes it is.

Also, I don't think that Apple designed this specifically for the massive market of comic book fans who really need an ebook reader but that seems to be all that it's good for.  The price and battery life make it just obscene compared to regular old b&w text ebooks and it has no real functionality at all compared to netbooks.  What does it do?

A couple of groups are trying to make it mainstream. I'm not that knowledgeable on web development though. All I know is that Safari, Chrome and Firefox (3.5) support HTML5 streaming and that YouTube and Vimeo are using it.

It'll be interesting if iPad supports HTML5. If it does, then Youtube videos would be viewable without a special section devoted to the device.
