Does it use e-ink? No!

I can't read a two or three page article on an LCD screen without getting eyestrain.

I'm experimenting with reading on the iPhone at the moment; really hasn't been a problem thus far. I'm quite sure e-ink would be better, and maybe the smaller screen of the iphone hides the problem...but i've been pleasantly surprised at how readable it is.

otoh, OCR errors everywhere :yuck

Occasional typos in paper books are annoying enough, especially in the 12th edition when they've been there since the 1st edition, but OCR errors are INCREDIBLY annoying. They typically substitute a more common word for anything slightly weird, so it doesn't necessarily stand out to the eye as an error. You read the sentence, go 'hang on...', re-read it, figure out the error, silently curse, rinse, and repeat. I can see paying $10 just to avoid those.

It's fucking bullshit that Apple allowed this to happen. I mean, it's the OPPOSITE of EVERYTHING they fought for with the iPod. It's clear they only did it to drum up sales on the iPod but fuckers who would invest in an iPad don't give a shit about prices. They're already sold on staring at a bright LCD display for hours at a time to justify their purchase instead of supporting a device DESIGNED for reading books.

Oh that's right. The bezel is touch sensitive, because as we all know from the shift from the click wheel to the iPod Touch, haptic feedback isn't needed anymore on anything. Why have page turning buttons on the iPad? Just do a 3-finger swipe or pinch on the side, or shake it up and down to turn the page. "Beautiful. Elegant. iPad"

so, yesterday it was found that apparently you can sync any non-drm .epub book through itunes and read it through their ereader software, and you can also use voiceover on any ebook for some comical text-to-speech action

that's pretty cool, i guess, makes stanza pretty unnecessary if they offer similar features (any ebook format is pretty easily converted to .epub, only takes a couple of seconds)

well, they could have always locked out syncing of anything other than books purchased through itunes as a concession to publishers, and the voiceover thing is a bit of a surprise considering the stink publishers raised about the speech-to-text in the kindle

I'm curious where Stanza backs up its books, askhully. I have a number of books on it, and have fully restored my Touch two or three times. One time it nuked all the books on Stanza, but I'd assumed they'd be included in the backup. Then I realized I have no idea where it puts the app data, and I'm guessing Stanza treats each book as simple app data.

You're saying .epub books can be drag-and-dropped into iTunes and it will organize and store that crap for you?

The Notion Ink Adam is out June 10. That's the only one that really checks all the feature boxes so far, but the more I think about the iPhone, what really makes it click is the 3G connection. Such a mundane thing, these days, and it seems like a waste to pay for another data plan for something you can't even make phone calls on, but really...it transforms a Touch into something massively more useful. Everything else out there is going to be reliant on wifi, and I get zero wifi that isn't at home. Taking away the 3G means you have to be more organized about putting all the media and data you want on the physical device, and moves us back from the server-thin client model I like so much. Tricky.

I guess that's gonna be the case when they do the update before the iPad launches.

The Lenovo convertible I mentioned above and the Entourage Edge have both gotten mediocre reviews, so they're sorta out for me.

I'm still flipflopping on the iPad, tbh

It'd be an easy NO if I had to pay real money for it.

I don't think I want an iPad, even benefiting from a friend's discount price. First-generation Apple hardware is always akin to a practical joke on early adopters.

my main concern is the battery life.

well, not the battery life, the fact that it's yet another device i have to remember to charge each night. The Kindle doesn't have that issue and whilst 10 hours is probably more time than i'll ever spend reading books in my entire life, it's still a potential stumbling block if i happen to get into this "reading" thing.

yeah, battery life is a killer.  I hate that I need to charge my netbook after every school day.  Other than the price, the battery life is why I haven't bought an iphone yet.  My old phone can last a week without charging and that includes playing Bookworm for hours on it.

Very true. If I lived in the US however I'd be mighty tempted on trying the 16gb 3G model. 30$ A MONTH for unlimited 3G data would be remarkable. Only $630 too. Unless you're a poor it's not exactly going to break the bank, renewing that battery will surely cost a little down the line, but I've only ever had great experiences with Apple support.

So in other words, when your battery dies, it's only a week wait for them to give you a refurbed iPad for only $105.95.  What a steal!

Interest or no, let the suckers jump on in and beta test the first-generation models.  Wait for the next round of iPads before purchasing.

Personally I still have zero interest in this thing, or any tablets for that matter.  My iPhone is fine.  I'd like to get a good netbook at some point though.

Out of the box, apparently, the ipad will not work.  It has to sync with iTunes just like the touch and the iphone.  Complete bullshit.

hopefully when all is said and done in my personal affairs i will have enough left (plus the $ from selling my ipod touch) to get the low-end one, it'll probably be the one nice thing i am able to get for myself all year

reading and watching videos of all the comic reader and other neat apps (you can stream netflix instant watch up on this bitch) sort of sealed the deal for me

i kept remembering when i first got my ipod touch and the only complaint i had while messing with it (reading comics, playing games, etc) was "man i wish the screen was bigger" - so i guess i really wanted a big ipod touch all along

This is kinda funny, since one of the big reasons people think the iPad will be so successful for is that it will capture the same market that just wants to use a stripped-down, easy-to-use device.  But since you need a PC/Mac to sync it up to, it can't quite be used that way.

It would have been better if the iPad worked on its own right out of the box.

I have more or less given up on the iPad as a functional tablet for today's needs, but am pretty happy that all these Apple lemmings are buying these giant iPhones - since it'll mean more competition from superior Android/Win 7 devices that will also be undoubtedly cheaper.

yeah, despite looking like a useless product at launch, the apps make it seem awesome...except that scrabble app that is four guys with iphones sitting around an ipad.  I still don't feel that what I need it for would justify the cost of the thing (I'd go 32gig wi-fi only if I got it).  The real killer feature is the battery life.  Reviews are pinning it at 12 hours.  My netbook is around 3 to 4 on the standard battery, and granted it can do a lot more and cost half the price, it is still an impressive number.

I'll get a future revision of it eventually.  For now I'm waiting for the new iphones, hopefully with a good battery life this time.

If the rumored specs are true, the new iPhones are going to blow the iPads out of the water...

...and the next batch of iPads will have the same features.

Also I call bullshit on the battery life.  You can drain iPhone batteries pretty quickly if you've got internet going and do any "intensive" apps like games.  I'm sure the iPad battery might last that long if wi-fi is off and you're not doing much with it.  :P

Walt Mossberg, in his review, said his ipad got more than 10 hrs - all with a mix of music, videos, internet, and other usage.

.....but yeah, I call bullshit. Real world usage always backs down manufacturer claims.  I have never encountered a product yet where the battery life lasted as long as they claim.

the thing is that Apple was the one who said 10 hours battery life while the reviews and tests people are doing are saying 12 hours.  Don't know what exactly they're doing, but if they are overshooting Apple's estimates, that is kinda great.

but I agree that playing games on the iphone drains is incredibly fast.  That is part of why I haven't bought one yet.  If I'm gonna have an "all in one" device, I don't want my phone to die just because my mp3 player or game playing device died.  Currently I'm able to play Bookworm for hours on my mobile and it barely drains.  I need something like that out of the iphone, then I'll pick one up for sure.

Well, let's see how those batteries hold up with that much heavy use over time.  I've been using Apple products since 1986 (which is why I'm telling you guys, DO NOT BUY FIRST GEN APPLE PRODUCTS) and I don't believe the battery life will last-- really wanted to get a Magic Mouse recently, for example, but didn't after reading on MacRumors message boards how the battery life starts out great and then dies out far too quickly.  I got a Kensington mouse instead.

Anyway, the people at Apple are still marketing fucking geniuses.  Everyone is furiously masturbating over the iPad now, and already getting hard over the new iPhones.

The Magic Mouse is potentially worse than those fuckin distinguished mentally-challenged 'mighty mice' with those little circular balls that usually don't work out of the box or break in a few days. I was kinda keen on the magic mouse then I used one and it sucked. The feet of the mouse are made out of thick, hard as fuck rubber so it scratches like finger nails on a chalk board unless you have one smooth ass desk/a glass desk... Why can't apple just not be distinguished mentally-challenged with mice, it's called SILICON YOU FUCKERS. Logitech G7 wireless ftw.

I've been "hard" over an iphone with a good battery life since the first one came out.  For a while I considered the Droid but in the end I like my ipod touch, I just don't use tit that much because it isn't something I take with me everywhere.  If I can have the functionality of that + a new phone with good battery life, I'll be happy.

and for the apple selling people on the ipad, I mean, they're great at making people think they need their products.  I don't know if anyone else watches Modern Family, but the latest episode is a giant commercial for the ipad.

Is there any talk of being able to run both Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 on any of the upcoming tablets and even toggling or dual booting? - there's something to be said for just pressing the on button and having quick access to 90% of everything you'd want to use it for like the iPad, but I'd still not want them to be limited to it being a smartphone with elephantitis.

Not that I'm exactly sure how such a thing would work.

No.  MS has very specific specs for phones running WP7.  Tablet sized devices don't fit those specs.  They can change their mind, obviously, but nothing has been announced.

Was at the mall today and popped into the Apple Store to check out the iPad.  Tons of people inside trying them, nobody buying them.  I know it's sold like half a million already, but it was still kinda funny.  Trying one for myself just confirmed what I already thought about it-- it's a giant iPod Touch and I still have no interest whatsoever in buying one.  It was also a lot heavier than I expected.  Holding one up to read an e-book or browse the internet in situations where you aren't sitting down or standing at a spot without something you can rest it on just isn't going to work.  I don't see how the hell people are going to be able to play driving games where you need to turn the entire iPad to steer, for example, comfortably.  It works with the iPod Touch/iPhone, but it's just too large and awkward with the iPad.  Still, it was nice having a larger screen (Youtube looked like shit though) for web browsing and e-mail (the keyboard kinda sucks), properly-converted videos look fantastic, and the photo viewer is nice and all, but that's nowhere near enough to pique my interest.  I continue to question the whole "iPad fits inbetween smartphones and notebooks" logic.  My iPhone is far more portable and easier to hold, and the iPad can't do 90% of the shit that my netbook can.  It's just not for me.

Seriously, if those guys aren't making millions of dollars, they're underpaid. I really don't know how Apple is able to continually convince people they're the best.
They are expected to hit a million sold in America by the time of their conference tomorrow for a $500+  product. It is mind boggling how successful they are with literally every product they come up with, especially tablets which is normally such a niche product but now just the Apple name and a price hike compared to competition puts it on the cover of both Time and Newsweek during launch week.

Didn't it underperform all the analyst estimates? Everyone was saying 700k but then Apple reported 300k. Still impressive but that doesn't put them on track for a million this week.

No, that was a estimate including all pre-orders that had yet to ship due to the first weeks online orders already being completely sold out as well including 3G orders.  According to MacRumors they hit 750k yesterday in actual sales.

I see this product as useless to me but there is no denying Apple has a huge hit on their hands. But that is too be expected with Apple products nowadays.

Plus, that's probably more tablets than have been sold by everyone else combined, ever.

That is the thing non-Apple fans should be happy about. Assuming they are interested in the idea of a tablet that is. Apple has completely revived if not invented the modern tablet market  because I doubt the average consumer even heard of a tablet pre-iPad. Unlike us the whole idea of it is probably a lot more impressive and shocking being completely unaware of the tech before this. You will be seeing a lot of new high end tablets all over the place now that its seen as a viable product line.

It is kind of silly most of the rest of the industry has to rely on Apple's marketing ability to sell the public on "new" product lines (mp3 players and now tablets) before being able to take advantage of the market (and often with superior products). Why not just learn and copy what Apple does right and beat them to the punch in terms of public awareness? Now the public will associate tablets with iPad like they associate mp3 players with iPods. It seems silly Apple is allowed to get away with this time after time. It can't be THAT hard to figure out what Apple does right marketing wise.
