Fundamental nutrition for the unemployed?
« on: January 27, 2010, 10:58:04 PM »
So,it happened.  Whatever.  I picked up a few applications and wrote some websites down, yadda yadda.  Only problem is I have enough saved to pay my bills for one month, but not a whole lot to work with for food.  So I just need a general idea of cheap foodstuffs to stock on and not get scurvy.

The latter.  I figured ramen is a sure thing.  What's a cheap protein source I can buy in bulk. Tuna?

And about the job- I'm glad, well besides thinking about finding a new job.  It was a place with naggy management and tactless customers who could interpret any little thing as an assault on their person.  The customer in question wrote a complaint and sure enough it was quoting things I never said.  It was saying the food wasn't coming out quick enough and linking that to my service.  But I don't control when food is ready, the understaffed kitchen that night did.  SHRUG.

Sucks man, good luck to you :(

Tuna should do the trick. I don't know how much salty ramen you want to ingest.

I used to have this handy (government mandated?) PDF that attempted to provide a low-income diet with the maximum possible nutrition.  Can't find it though!

Tuna and beans are good sources of cheap protein.  Good cheap foods are, as previously said, ramen but also rice.  You can buy a fuck ton of rice for super cheap, put a little butter and some seasoned salt or whatever on it and eat the fuck out of it.  Trust me, I've been dirt poor before.  You can also buy super cheap spaghetti or whatever, then buy a can of diced tomatoes and tomato puree and make your own sauce for cheaper than what you would pay for it in the store.  Tastes better with some seasonings, too.

Eggs, rice, beans, pasta, oatmeal get some spices and you'll be all set for three meals.  I've been poor as heck, so I've been there.  As Triumph said you can by rice in bulk for super cheap, same for oatmeal.  Powdered milk is also cheap and provides good protein.

Ramen ain't bad if you dump the flavor packet.

A staple of mine in college was ramen noodles w/o flavor packet, a peanut butter sauce made with natural peanut butter, soy sauce and fish sauce, topped with a fried egg and garnished with sliced scallions.

Rice and pasta essentially are the tastiest and cheapest things.  You could also go crazy with potatoes too.  There's a lot of ways to prepare them but try to avoid oil unless you want to become demi's sex slave of course.

rice and beans

buy some cans of different vegetables, chicken buillion cubes, and a whole chicken that's on special - make a huge pot of chicken soup and freeze it in containers - you can also throw a can of mixed vegetables into some ramen

marinara sauce, cheap shredded cheese, pack of sliced pepperoni, and a bag of pita bread - make yourself a whole bunch of cheap pizzas

tuna and salad fixings and a box of saltines

hot dogs are pretty cheap

Its the potatoes that will make him fat, not the oil.

Starches in general will, but yeah I was trying to exaggerate.  My point is that potatoes can fill you up.

Go to ethnic markets--latin, asian, etc., emcee, if you can find some in your area.  You can get great food at cheap prices, especially veggies.

Yeah, eggs can be bought for dirt cheap, especially at ethnic markets.  The Mexican vegetable stand around the corner from me has cheap eggs.  Good source of protein, eggs.

Things that are filling and pack nutritional (and caloric) punch are milk, peanut butter, canned tuna, eggs,  ramen. Time to hunt for food, buy a bow and hit the woods. No but seriously, hope you find something quick emcee.

Whatever you do Emcee, don't forget to find the whimsy in your circumstances.  You'll need it now more than ever.

It may be true but I think he has enough harsh reality to deal with right now. Your dazzling insight into the world of waiter economics could possibly have waited 'til he posts a thread where he's looking for a new job, rather than one in which he's looking for sympathy 'cause he has no food.

@ Cormacaroni

But true.  Getting fired from a job as a waiter isn't anything to worry about.  I used to work at an Olive Garden and people were always getting fired or not showing up.  No big deal.

I'm not offended or anything, but I noticed we had an astronomical turnover rate too.  Would you say that even if there isn't any indication that a location was hiring I should just assume they are?

I hope you don't plan on staying unemployed EmCee. Start looking for another job ASAP. Don't follow Kosma's trail who is unemployed for like 7 months now :'(
i immediately set out after I got 'terminated' and looked all around my immediate area for who was hiring.  About three places accepting applications, and maybe another 3 where I have to go online.  Decent odds. I want to work at the movie theater but you have to print an application from their website.  I'll be stopping by the library tomorrow to use their printer.

How is the price of broccoli in America? It's really cheap here. I steam it and eat it along with rice and whatever meat is a good value on the day I go shopping. It's been so long since I had to seriously shop for food in America that I can't remember. But a lot of the suggestions in this thread are bringing back memories of my college days.

Ok, so when these online applications start asking me all these questions like "Have you EVER AT ANY TIME been late for work" and such am I never not supposed to deny that in the four years I've worked I've been late numerous times?  Does someone actually look at these questionaires?  Would it be best to paint myself as the rosiest employee possible for these, or be honest?

do you mean those big stupid questionnaires?  yeah, just try to honestly show yourself in the best light but don't lie.  I doubt any employer actually reads those things though.

What are the options? If there is an "If yes, please explain" option then maybe you could write something about a legitimate excuse for why you were late. But they don't want to hear that you were late all the time at your old jobs. That's something that you shouldn't be honest about.
