Its as if The Academy is using the expanded selection to shill for high profile movies that have no right being nominated (well, more than they once were able to, I mean... The Blindside.. really?). And Avatar is totally going to be this years Beyonce.

I want this movie to win best picture, but No Country was the Coens' one-hit wonder at the Academy. I don't think they're ever getting another one.

Yeah, check out Serious Man and tell us if fucking Sy Ableman isn't the most sly, slimy and devious antagonist put to film last year. The worst thing is, he's totally believable as a character.

Chigurgh: *tosses coin* Call it.

Sy: Anton, this is childish. Surely you have a greater purpose in life. Tossing coins won't bring back your dead mother.

Chigurgh: wut?

Sy: All I'm saying is that you should seek professional help. Here's a nice Jewish psychiatrist I know *hands him card*. Why don't you go see him. I'm sure you'll feel better after a few visits.

Chigurgh: huh?

Sy: Look, do it for the kids. Can't you see your poor wife is suffering?

Chigurgh: o- okay

-Sy gives him his trademark, disarming, repugnant hug -

**

cut to Sy banging Chigurgh's wife while he's at the doctor's. At some point in the future Chigurgh will suicide, therefore Sy >>>>> Chigurgh

the trick about A Serious Man is that it's A Serious Coen Movie, which makes sense they'd return to that well after Burn After Reading. Everyone seemed to think A Serious Man was a comedy, but it's only funny in the way that Kafka is funny, or more concretely, the way God's behavior in the Old Testament is funny. But since Prole is a.k.a. The Wrathful God of Moses, he'll definitely appreciate it.

My grievance has less to do with Avatar, and more with the inclusion of The Blind Side and District 9 - although the Avatar nomination was pretty ridiculous. The reality is - for anyone with any industry insight - is that the wide field has to do with money rather than critical acclaim.

The trick was to allow the majors to cash in on Oscar nominations, and lure in the lowest common denominator with mainstream nominations. Judging by Glen's reaction, it is a rousing success!

There is nothing for Willco to offend. Very few film critics have any credibility. Having read the writing and opinion of most of what launders rottentomatoes, about 95% of the editorial public is either a: genre lover, socialite, hollywood wish-wash, refuse from the E channel or a trite parcel of moonbeams and rainclouds. It is rare to read a review and find anything insightful that any careful viewer would like to see explored, and even rarer that a review sheds new light on the film piece itself.

I would even say that the only difference between movie reviews and videogame reviews is that the small 5% of intelligent criticism exists at all. Beyond that, its a god damned geek out.

Eh, I have respect for some of the better film critics, but this was a calculated decision to pull in the MTV crowd and boost profits for the majors. Pretty much anyone inside the industry recognizes this as so. Like I said, it'll be the individual guild awards that will have the most merit here on out.

The sad thing is that a lot of smaller films were financed by majors within the past twenty years for the sole reason of cashing in on Academy nominations. Yes, it resulted in a lot of typical Oscar bait (Crash), but we got some genuinely good flicks from that run. The fact that majors can now rely on the tentpole flicks to gather nominations, means they'll be less likely to finance smaller flicks.

This is in addition to the fact that the majors were already significantly reducing the amount of films they were producing, opting to focus on tentpole flicks instead.

And really, that's not good for anyone.

I had completely forgotten about the expanded field of nominees.  Weird seeing it happen now when there seem to be fewer total films coming out.

But really, who's been taking the Oscars that seriously?  I've been disillusioned since L.A. Confidential got jobbed (in favor of guess who).

Having read the writing and opinion of most of what launders rottentomatoes

I don't understand the shock. The inclusion of 5 more nominations was obviously to cram in some blockbusters that have no chance of winning, not nominate the next best 5 movies of the year. The Blind Side won't win, but Ma and Pa have seen it and sure liked it. Maybe they'll actually tune in.

Avatar still would have been nominated in a field of five.

What I'm seeing a lot of here is "critical opinion doesn't matter, but my opinion does."

As opposed to "Everyone should defer to critics when they agree with me."  Honkey please, we remember you whinging when Entourage (!!!) got left off a Best TV of the Decade list.
