How is Dragon Quest VII?
« on: January 31, 2010, 08:50:51 AM »
I'm thinking about getting it and playing it on my PSP but not sure if its worth it. I sort of got burnt out on DQV hunting for Liquid Metal Slimes.

Hmmm, it's not really the battle system that I got bored of though. I can grind in these games seemingly forever. Its more of the story and I felt I've seen most of the secret optional stuff already (I'm playing the retranslated PS2 version).

well the plot of DQ7 works like this,a bunch of kids find a temple with lots of broken plaque and you go around finding shards to repair these plaque, everytime you repair a plaque you get teleported in the past to a new island and each island has it's own plot

when you finaly solve the plot of a island (which 80% of the times involve killing some big baddie) that island appear in the present so you get to see what happened to the village after your adventures
you also need to explore the island in the present to get more shard to continue so you can unlock more island and basicaly this pattern repeat until you eventualy runs out of plaque to fix

one of the most annoying aspect it's that some shards are hidden pretty well and if you miss a shard you can't continue the game, sometimes you clear a dungeon in the past and then you are forced to redo the same dungeon on the present to acquire new shards to continue

but the most annoying aspect of the game is the job system, halfway trough the game your character gets the ability to learn new skills trough the job system, you pick a job,you fight a certain number of battles and *BAM* your character learn a new skill, the problem is that some skill are completly worthless (one of the thief skill just tell you the name of your current location) and some almost break the game (like the one that let you attack 4 times consecutively instead of 1) so ultimately the challenge of the game depends on how willing you are to read a job faq and/or grind

Honestly, I think the root of my annoyance is from playing this on a console. I think the ability to pick up and play on a handheld will make the experience more enjoyable for me. I may end up playing another game to cleanse my pallet though. With that said the job system of this game has really got me interested.

Well, it's really easy to get burnt out on the game. For instance, I put in about 130 hours and I'm still not done (doing optional content, which I should hopefully have finished by Super Bowl Sunday). If you want to get some of the best jobs and abilities, there is a LOT of grinding that needs to be done. Difficulty level is pretty unbalanced, there are a few parts where the game jumps greatly in difficulty without warning. Not to mention, it's pretty easy to miss the different Shards that unlock new worlds (don't be afraid to use a guide).

Some of the small vignettes are really cool though, and very interesting as far as RPG scenarios go. Not my favorite DQ by any means but still worth playing if you want to be satisfied for 100+ hours.

I'll gladly take it. Played the first couple hours years ago, before some asshole back in college stole it from me.

Took me about 144 hours to beat (I still remember because it's the longest I've played through a single game), and I guess I didn't do the extra bonus quest after you "finish" the game.  I also didn't bother filling up the monster zoo.  The fact that I stuck with the game for that long should tell you something about its quality.

That said, it's a VERY traditional, VERY ugly RPG.  However, it lends itself to bite-sized bits of play since you can just sit down and finish one "shard" in a few hours before moving on to the next one.

Nice, I JUST beat the main quest, kicked the end guy's ass. I think I did it in about 130 hours. Pretty cool ending, all things said and done. Now on to the postgame stuff. I built my town to be the Grand Bazaar and completed the Monster Park (but didn't catch all the monsters), it's really just beating the 2 optional dungeons.

Ok just so this joke goes on long enough, you are talking about 7 right and not 8 (the ps2 title)

Cause I own 8

And the guide (purty art)

This was my least favorite aspect as well.  The game basically forces you to play it OCD style.

I've been playing this motherfucker for 60hrs on and off and oh my God it feels like I'm just half way through it. But this game definitely has the coolest Casino setup out of all of the Dragon Quest games. I like how its split up and has better prizes as you get to a bigger Casino. I also like the Job system in this game. Sure its sort of tedious if you're grinding for better skills but I like how you can fuse different jobs together and getting unique skill.

:rock CASINO :rock

I rigged my controller to keep holding "up" on the slot machines at the Coastal casino, left for the evening to hang out with my g/f, came back to find I had 150,000 coins.

Where are you in the game, BT? I don't recommend doing the postgame content, it's pretty boring and a bit of a waste of time. But overall I loved the game, some great side-stories there.

yea that's what pretty much happens everytime there is a casino in a rpg,i never understood why dragon quest keeps having them! it doesn't make the player feel like they are gambling,it's just a way to lose a huge amount of time to get equipment that ultimately breaks the game

I did the same casino trick but had it going while I was browing Online. The slots are way more forgiving in this game (than in DQV).

I've currently reawakaned all the elementals and got the sky stone back. I'm thinking about grinding a bit since normal enemies are still a bit of a thread (unless I'm constantly healing my party).

Oh, you're right near the end of the game... for a good grinding area, go to Krage, use the Shepherd "whistle" skill, and fight Metals... use the EvilSlash skill to take them out. That's how I got all my charas up to level 75 in a matter of a few hours.
