My USB drive lost capacity?
« on: February 03, 2010, 12:59:13 PM »
A while ago I bought a USB drive, with 8 or 16GB capacity, I don't really remember.
I unsuccessfully tried to make it boot my computer with the Chromium operating system.

Now, a few months later, when I check the USB drive, it says it only has 950MB capacity.
Where did the rest go? How can I restore it?

this oddly happens with my usb drives when i delete files from MAC

what i have to do is go to a windows machine and show hidden files and then delete the hidden directory "trashed"

then my full capacity is restored.  I haven't dicked around enough to find out how to display "hidden" directories in OSX

Sounded good, doesn't seem to be anything there. I switched on the "show hidden files and folders" thing.

Try this:  Go into the disk management window.  Easiest way I know to do it is to right click "My Computer", click Manage.  Then click "Disk Management".

You should be able to see the sizes of every attached drive.

Get PartitionMagic, it's possible the drive has multiple partitions, with the alternative one only being accessible through boot or some shit. Who knows, really.

tehjaybo wins, Raban is also right, it's split in 4 partitions with the biggest one unallocated.

How the hell did you manage to do this is what I'm wondering.

Seriously, Partition Magic may look like a nice, modern app...but it's actually a snarling primeval beast from the days of DOS and Win 3.1. You can totally fuck your PC up with a few stray clicks if you're not sure what you're doing.

I did that to my brother's PC that had Windows 98 on it a long time ago.  Oddly enough, I deleted the partition and with windows and we lost all that and then when I rebooted I discovered a partition with Windows 3.1... because that's what it booted up in :'(
