I was wondering if you guys think gaming is reaching the end of its creativity.  Is there much room for more creative titles next gen?  Does it need to be more creative?

Also why arent there more games like Wonder Project J, Axelay and Cybernator.  It is like good games comes and no one wants to expand on them.  I so miss the days of the SNES.  Where it seems devs came up with games upon games of great ideas.  Todays games seem to be creative solely on asthetic like Madworld.

Please name me some creative games for this gen BORE!

I mostly agree with you.

Stick with pc and you should be fine, but the three only truly creative games I have played this gen are Portal, Dead Rising and Mirror's Edge. Play all of them.

Also, downloadable titles are usually the way to go these days. Get stuff like Braid, Trine, the Pixeljunk games, whatever. Since they tend to have to go for a lower budget, they can involve more risk.

I wouldn't say it's reaching the end of its creativity, it's just very difficult to deliver completely fresh experiences without new hardware of sorts (Nintendo realized this creativity problem years ago btw).

This is the reason why I'm terribly disappointed in Sonys handling of their motion controller; They're in the perfect position to create revolutionary experiences yet here they are telling people nutty stuff like "u need a dualshock in one hand annnnnnnnd the motion controller in the other" :wtf.

Some creative games from this gen include Demons Souls, Super Mario Galaxy, Little Big Planet, Braid, and a lot more. Heavy Rain looks like another one, judging from the demo the game has the potential to be one of the most talked about games of the year.

There's nothing creative about Dead Rising, it's right up there with Left 4 Dead for being one of the most overhyped games of this generation.

Get out.

Dead Rising is creative because it mixes an open-world and with time constraints. It's similar to Majora's Mask and BOF: Dragon Quarter, but more evolved. Every action you make will have to be accounted for on the clock, so you have to make every second count. It is a game where failure must be accepted to continue.

I have heard of dead rising, but i never heard of it as creative, what makes it creative?

you...?

The game puts you in a mall with zombies and wacko bosses.  Every time you play, the game is different because it has a time system that makes it impossible to do everything.  Like, if some shit is going down in one part of the mall, you won't be there to see it if you're fighting a clown with two mini-chainsaws.  There is the camera mechanic where pictures you take get rated on various criteria (sexy, horror, etc.)  Then there is the entire juice mechanic where you mix various food and fruits to make different drinks that can make you run faster, increase life, etc. as well as a book mechanic that has bonuses like increased weapon durability.  You also level up and gain more abilities; later in the game you get the imitate zombie walk from Shaun of the Dead and the ability to rib zombie guts out with your bare hands.  And because the game is set in a mall, you're able to go into any store and use those items to kill the zombies, or just steal a nice suit to wear.  It's fun.

Just don't get the Wii version.  It's a very different game than the 360 game and they remove almost everything that made the 360 game good.  I don't mean "graphics hurr hurr" but the core game is totally different and awful.

ill try to explain this to you, you know when you read words and it makes you feel bad? a defense mechanism is that snarky stretch you make to make to...make it not sting so much

btw, this isnt gaf, this is a small forum, people are going to call you on your bullshit, its not that hard to follow peoples posts, in fact it takes more effort to avoid them, so just because someone calls you out doesnt mean they are "your fan"

I sometimes get in funks like that from playing, say, Mirror's Edge, which is such a unique take on everything it does that it makes first person shooters appear uninspired, creatively bankrupt and uninteresting, but it's pretty unfair. Games are evolving like crazy, but most of them don't do it with big swaths like ME, with a majority focusing on making many small adjustments over several versions. The short gestation period between games makes it harder to spot the new ideas and improvements, but it's all there. And like others have said, it's not exactly a unique complaint.

If you can't find a whole slew of games to enjoy this gen then i just don't know where you are looking...

This.

If you can't find something to like with more games coming out on a myriad of platforms than ever before then I'm not sure what to say.

There is probably no one dominant platform like in some of the gens which means you probably have to game on a couple to get your fix but if you can't find games you aren't looking.

just you.  Take a break for a bit.

2009-2010 has better gaming than any years since 2004 and 1998.  If you take a break and come back with a fresh outlook you will find plenty of fantastic new titles that are very fun, innovative, and polished.

MGS3 (what I still consider the best console game to date)
Half-life 2 (what I still consider the best PC game to date)
Shadow Hearts 2 (my favorite game of all time)
Ninja Gaiden (self-explanatory)
Rallisport Challenge 2 (best arcade racer ever)
Halo 2 (love/hate but it was a big deal)
Mawaru Made in Mario (innovative and fantastic; best in the series still)
Import-wise Dragon Quest V remake on PS2 (one of the best rpgs ever in a great looking and fully orchestrated awesome remake)
And we got the Berserk PS2 game which was awesome fanservice for fans

So yeah, 2004 was insane and up there with 1998.  I think 2009 is the 3rd best year in gaming and who knows what 2010 will bring.  If you notice, each time it's basically the peak of the gen.  1998 = peak of the PS1 era; developers finally got their shit together, 2004 = peak of the PS2/Xbox era, 2009/maybe 2010 = peak of PS3/X360/Wii era.

*edit, yeah WoW was big too!  2004 was HUGE

1998 is def. the best gaming year of all time. I mean, Half-Life, Metal Gear Solid, Ocarina of Time and Xenogears all came out in the same MONTH. Love em or hate em, those are games people still talk about twelve years later.

2001 was my second favorite year - Phantasy Star Online, Final Fantasy X, ICO, Silent Hill 2, Gitaroo Man, Max Payne, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2.

Some of my favorite games there.

I've always wanted to play Xenogears, from what I understand it's one of the most noteworthy JRPGs, but it's impossible to find, so that's never happening.

Himuro's list of 1998 leaves off a bunch of good games (while including stuff like Spyro) I'm checking wiki and it's pretty amazing how many good games came out then.

Resident Evil 2
Baldur's Gate 1
Thief 1
Shogo
TRIBES (:rock)

2001 was my second favorite year - Phantasy Star Online, Final Fantasy X, ICO, Silent Hill 2, Gitaroo Man, Max Payne, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2.

:bow you :bow2 for including Gitaroo Man

personally I have a hard time ranking this stuff.  I know 1998 is the best and other years hover around after that.

I also lie and consider Symphony of the Night to be a 1998 game to make it seem even more awesome.
