stalker call of pripyat
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:48:40 AM »
Ok, this game is pretty fucking Polish.

So I'm randomly quicksaving in the middle of a big firefight against like 10 other stalkers. Problem is, a big emission is about to hit that would swiftly bring about my demise if I don't find cover soon. Ok, not a biggie; if I can get through this firefight, there's shelter nearby. But every time I reload a previous save, the emission somehow get's exponentially closer. It's like I saved right in the middle of it.  Now when I reload, I instantly die because of the emission. wtf

Anyway, so far played for a couple of hours:

PROS:
 -Nice Iighting

CONS:
-Clunky shooting mechanics
-It's ugly
-most of your time is spent running around barren plains
-constantly having to acquire meds and food and upgrades and ammo

I will give this another shot tomorrow. But right now this feels like third world gaming.

yeah, I played the first one when it came out. I remember liking it. But I swear they haven't moved on at all. Even trying to throw a frag grenade takes forever in this game. Everything feels clunky.

Stalker is one of those games that you are supposed to like but I never actually did.

This situation reminds me of Operation Flashpoint.

I used to love OF, such an awesome game - played it for ages. I skipped ARMA 1 and got ARMA II, recently. Couldn't even pass the training missions! It felt completely alien to me. I would think, how did I ever enjoy this? I can't even work the vehicles properly. Everything is unnecessarily complicated. gah...

To me STALKER feels unnecessarily complicated now. I don't want to have to stop midway through a mission and hide coz an emission is coming. I don't want to keep repairing armor and weapons and looking for meds and all sorts of anti-agents. I want to collect artefacts and shoot monsters while being scared shitless.

I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

I'm definitely not saying STALKER is a bad game. It's just one that whenever I start to play it, it never holds my interest despite an interesting premise and game mechanics that in theory I should like. Hell I love Deus Ex.

Perhaps one day I will play it again and it will just click.

I just really can't stand FPS RPGs. Too many things to deal with menu-wise, and the gameplay in general is overly complicated to me.

I'm sure if I play Deus Ex today I would hate it - even though it used to be one of my favourite games.

The general problem with FPS RPG's (And to be fair there are so few of them) is that the action part is often crap. You tolerate it because of the depth the RPG stuff is supposed to bring. We'll see how Alpha Protocol (terrible generic name for a game btw) turns out.

I haven't played Call of Pripyat but I like the original stalker a lot.  I didn't have the problem with shooting like other seemed to and it only became apparent that there was a problem when I played Clear Sky because it had more scripted shooter sequences.  In the original stalker, I thought a lot of the time you could either avoid shootouts or take them slow; not quite stealth, but positioning in the area.  Felt good when I lined up a shot, thought out the trajectory and all that, and managed to take out a bunch of enemies with a pistol.  Or in one section where two factions were battling, I sneaked in and stole some powerful guns and shot my way out from the inside.  I also liked the inventory system.  It lets my OCD go wild and organize the shit out of things.

I don't think I would call stalker an fps rpg, btw.  It has bits of rpg and survival horror in there.  not that genre / subgenre nonsense matters.

playing through this. so far it's pretty fun. i assaulted this base of mercs and it took me like 40 minutes of taking pot shots, running around for cover, etc. finally killed everyone but most of the bodies had shit loot. finally got enough money to repair my armour so now i dont feel like i'm gonna die any second. then i found this far filled with zombies that i cleared out.

one thing i'm wondering. if an emission hits and you have nowhere to go....you're pretty much fucked. how much of a "cover" do you need to find? a cargo container isn't enough so i'm guessing just basic buildings will do. hopefully one doesnt hit when i'm in the middle of nowhere :\

You have enough time to get to cover once you hear the emission warning no matter where you are.  I can pretty much guarantee that unless you get greedy or are overweight; you can even survive a bit when it does hit as the health hit you take gradually gets bigger and it's not an instant death.  The game shows you where cover is and tells you when you're safe with a mission update.

It led to a cool situation once where I just ran to the closest building and it turned out to be some science lab with people willing who has useful information for me.

I didn't feel it much with Clear Sky, but SoC and Pripyat are two of the only games that that make me feel uneasy at times.  Yesterday I pretty much took a huge detour just to avoid fighting these two midget mutants.  I was watching them as I was climbing this hill and an unfortunate trio of bandits ran into them and got slaughtered.  I waited around a bit to see if the mutants would wander off so I could loot the bandits, but they were sticking around fighting dogs.

btw, that farm (if you're talking about the sawmill) with the zombies has tools in the addict of one of the buildings.  I still have no clue where to find the third set of tools.  Apparently I get them at a store.  I'm guessing that it's in pripyat.

I paid that one information dealer for a tip on where magpie is and he said around the Jupiter plant in the second area.  I'm around that area now and less people know of him here.  Apparently he is in disguise, as in, not dressed as a stalker.  Whenever I have time to play again I'm gonna ask around the freedom or duty guys.
