Pikmin, originally released in 2001, had a series of commercials in Japan that featured the tune "Ai no Uta" or literally "Love Song", which became a hit tune.

He was simply doing research for a mature launch title for the WiiHD. If he committed a crime at all, he committed the crime of caring about his craft too much. This is no different than when he does research in his garden.
