What are your toughts on star ocean?
« on: February 11, 2010, 08:47:49 PM »
i remember playing the psx one when psx was still alive and kicking,i enjoyed it,the item creation was distinguished mentally-challenged but neat, the characters were kinda of cool and it had those lovely pre-rendered background which went the way of the dodo,i was never able to finish it thanks to the ultra distinguished mentally-challenged boss who cast a spells that kill your entire party instantly unless you punch him so hard he doesn't get even a single turn... still i gave it another spin a while ago and it just didn't click again, the magic was kind of gone so i was wondering what do you guys think about it and about the other games of the series too

I played SO2 on PSX, and SO1 and 2 on PSP, and they are awesome. Apparently the series went off the rails starting with SO3 on PS2 and continued its path to self-annihilation in SO4, but I wouldn't know.

I enjoyed all the item creation stuff, btw.

I liked most of the Star Oceans, to a point. Characters and story are absolutely beyond defending. Crafting and skills are fun in SO2 and goes downhill from there (meaning the next installments in the series). I still don't understand why tri-Ace doesn't just give us a crafting system that allows you to do interesting shit early in the game.

Its all about the Battle System and keeping a chain going that allow you to get experience multipliers (this is for SO3 and SO4). Usually the middling Star Ocean fans will gush about the battle system and crafting, nothing else. It takes a special kind of uguu~ness to enjoy the scenario put forth in SO4.

Don't really care about it, the art style doesn't appeal to me.

I liked for, maybe hours 4-12 [yes, I started out not liking it that much], after that I just completely and utterly hated it.

Don't bother.

I hated SO3. I picked up SO4 International the other day, I'll probably hate it.

The producer of Star Ocean wishes to make an adult/erotic porn game but Square Enix won't let him (obviously). I believe this answers all questions about Star Ocean 4.

Sucks. tri-Ace should only make Valkyrie Profile games since that's all they can do right.

Absolutely LOVED 1 when I played it on the SFC back upon release. It's a short game that you can tell a lot was cut out of, and suffers from a lot of backtracking, but the combat was pretty interesting for the time, as well as the crafting and skills system. Storyline was a nice change from RPGs of the day, even if it was much too Star Trek-y.

2 is one of my favorite games of all time and by far the peak of the series. The skills/crafting were at their absolute best here, and offered you a ton of freedom. There were lots of side quests and optional minigames, whole characters that would/wouldn't join your party (not to mention, the cast was a bit more interesting than your usual RPG cliches), multiple (short) endings based on how you acted toward your party members. Combat was pretty frantic and, although a bit repetitive this day and age, was awesome.

I can't say I outright hated the 3rd game, but I expected the world of it after 2... and was extremely disappointed. Thought the dungeons were waaaaaay too long, combat felt slightly "off" (especially as enemies kept falling down rendering them unable to be hit), the skills and item creation system were extremely neutered, and of course the infamous plot twist. Definitely my least favorite in the series.

Even though everybody hates the 4th game, I had a great time with it (especially compared to #3), as I have an extra high tolerance for uguu. I thought the combat worked out a lot of the kinks the 3rd game suffered from, not to mention it was extremely fast-paced, more sci-fi than the rest of the series, and I liked "blindsiding" enemies. Save points were also spaced too far apart. Item creation worked fairly well, I liked how you would 'brainstorm' new recipes, even if grinding for drops got annoying.

The team definitely has some great ideas in terms of gameplay systems, and I love sci-fi/space travel in games, but needs much better writers and needs to add more save points in their games.
