Anyone playing the new Monkey Ball game?
« on: February 14, 2010, 10:00:21 AM »
Monkey Ball Step & Roll for the Wii.

Just read that the balance board is optional. That's good news. But the bad news is that it's still using motion controls.
The last Monkey Ball game on the Wii was very underwhelming, mainly due to the shitty controls.

I still want to try his one out. But I'm not expecting much.

SEGA should put Monkey Ball 1&2 on PSN/XBLA :hyper
Who cares for shitty motion controls in a monkey ball game.

Monkey ball would be a great candidate for gameroom. Are there any games announced for that that arent 30 years old?

I thought the firstvwii games controls were ok, but the puzzles were easier to make up for the reduced precision. The real killer was the fucking boss fights imo

I will try it.  I've bought every monkey ball to date because I am a stupid fan.  I'm sure none of the staff that made SMB1/2 (which I consider to be two of the greatest games of the decade) is still working on these games anymore.  The DS one was horrid, the Wii one was terrible.

But when I read that this one doesn't have bosses or story stuff and is just levels like SMB1/2 I'm thinking maybe it'll be fun.  Then again those weren't the #1 problem with the last wii game, it was the tilt controls didn't have the response and accuracy that SMB requires and an analogue stick gives.  So this will probably suck again.

I love Monkey Ball, even bought the chintzy GBA one! Unfortunately I don't hear good things from this one.

Supposedly this version is the worst one with the least "technical" courses due to the gross inaccuracy of the wiimote. The Wii balance board was up to snuff and mapped well to the original Monkey Ball during testing but unfortunately no one alive is super human enough to maneuver those courses. :lol

Fixed  ;)

The only good Super Monkey Ball game was the first one. It was already going downhill before it made the switch to the Wii, which just FUBAR'd the series completely and utterly.

You can't compare them at all.  Very different games in terms of how they control & level design.  No marble rolling games has ever come close to the perfection of the original SMB games.

Trials HD is closer to SMB than any of the marble rolling games.

The only good Super Monkey Ball game was the first one. It was already going downhill before it made the switch to the Wii, which just FUBAR'd the series completely and utterly.

Nah.  SMB2 has harder physics but it's full of A++ levels.

And yeah, like Slime said the original games required INSANE precision, moreso than any other game off the top of my head.  Navigating wirethin floor while making 90 degree turns and pulling off crazy cheat jumps (which were there are on purpose) depending on having an EXACT movement.

Despite the "lol, rolling = tilt = let's throw it on wii" mentality that doomed the franchise, The Wii is probably the WORST possible fit for the type of game SMB1/2 were.  Hell even the PS2 version of SMB1+2 was almost unplayable because the analogue on the PS2 stick was not accurate enough.

Best system for a legit new SMB would be X360.  The PS3 analogue is not up to task, the Wii nunchuck is stuck with the hexagon and not up to task and the portables....no.

The flexibility of the physics like this is what made the games so amazing.  Working the physics and the level design to make your own path.

So, I've been playing the game for about two hours now. The main levels are good. Not as good as SMB or SMB 2, but still enjoyable.
The mini games, however, are absolutely horrible.  :lol  Each one of them. And there are 21 available mini games available. Each one of them has horrible controls, is ugly and is very short.
Wow, Wii ruined another franchise thanks to its "revolutionary" controls.

Well, lucky you. Now you get to tell your grandchild that the minigames you used to play with your monkey balls were ruined by a Japanese bathroom scale.

It's like the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but worse.

I liked the first wii one.  I had no problems with the control in the main game.  Level design was a bit bland.  Most of the minigames were horrible though.

To be fair, the iphone and ds versions were terrible too.  They just don't know how to make a good monkey ball game anymore.

edit: I kind of wish sega had just died and sold all their properties to more capable studios.  Anyone who used to matter at sega is gone.  Could you imagine a sonic game by nintendo?  Or Capcom having access to things like panzer dragoon and Jet Grind Radio?  I guess yakuza and valkyria chronicles are their last bastions of quality.

I'm pretty sure the problem is the AAA Sega staff who did the first two games moved on.  I really can't imagine anyone of skill from the originals is still making these latest ones.
In fact, I can't really imagine anyone of skill at Sega during the 80s/90/s/earlyearly00s still being at the company at all.

Yep, its kind of depressing to think about all these awesome franchises being stuck with people who don't know how to make good games.

TJ Max is supposed to have killer deals on new games.  I think Halo ODST was like $25 there.  Kill two birds with one stone.  Plus you can swim around in the poor of clothing littered all over the floor.
