Ovechkin is one of the few hockey players that can do things that are patently incredible to casual fans like myself, as opposed to the "going top shelf on a backhand is really difficult from that angle" brand of skill.

He's scored lying down, sitting down, going between a defender's legs, between his own legs, etc.  One day I'll mumble unintelligibly to someone's grandchildren about having seen him in his prime.

Kid: Ovechkin? Who's that?
Old Mandark: He was a hockey player.
Kid: what's hockey?
Old Mandark: It was Canada's national sport before it was replaced by ice dancing.

Thankfully SoCal already forgot what Hockey is so I don't have to worry about the $10 minor league Hockey ticket prices going away.

Ovechkin is the only reason I watch Caps games. I used to be a pretty diehard fan in my youth (Peter Bondra :omg), but that faded away as I got older. I don't think I watched a single hockey game for maybe seven years until I started watching casually last year.

And Mandark, if this makes you feel better, I didn't start watching because I'm a bandwagon guy. The cute chicks at the bar I used to frequent were all Caps fans. I started watching hockey because of the chicks. Sad, but true.

EDIT: You ever see them play at USAir Arena, Mandark?

Curious as to what the more knowledgeable hockey fans here think of the Ovechkin-Crosby debate.

EDIT: You ever see them play at USAir Arena, Mandark?

The first game that I can specifically remember was this one.

Bondra was already the main goalscorer.  I remember not having followed hockey much, and deciding he was our best player based on the stats they had on his page in the program.  There was also Michal Pivonka, Calle Johansson, Steve Konowalchuk, Joe Reekie, Jim "Ace" Carey before the Penguins destroyed his psyche, and a very young Sergei Gonchar.

Man.  Checking that roster on hockeydb.com I realized for the first time that 94-95 was a lockout season.  Shows how close I was following the NHL before that point.

I actually got Pivonka to autograph a poster I got from a game.

Oddly enough, one of the most enjoyable hockey games I have ever attended was at Giant Center - back when the Hershey Bears were an affiliate for the Colorado Avalanche. I also saw them years ago, after the Capitals took on the team and they were coach by a little-known guy named Bruce Boudreau.

13 million is more than a third of Canada. No gold medal in math for you.

I was unaware your population was so low. No wonder you can afford health care!

That doesn't make sense.

Of course it does! You guys have the population of a small island! You don't even really have any health care costs!

In comparison, America probably has a population of diabetics equal to or greater than that of the entire Canadian population!

Ovechkin > Crosby

dude, he asked about knowledgeable hockey fans.

After tonight, I think we can establish that no matter Ovie's Individual skill, he can't seal the deal for his team.  He has now choked on the world junior championship, the NHL championship, and the Olympics.  While Sid has a Stanley Cup win, a world junior win, and is still alive during the Olympics.

Canada's own the podium campaign contributed to the death of a competitor.  Whatever happens, Canada's Olympics are marred.  Not even hockey can save you now!

Would it be accurate to say that Ovechkin is a better scorer, but Crosby is better at getting the whole offense to play to its optimum level?

There's probably some young Finnish child, in Finland, all in blue with a child sized Finnish flag propped up in his tiny fist about to ask his Papa what has gone wrong. Today is the day this young boy learns that Fathers also cry and his heroic image of papa is smashed to pieces.

Yup. It was in reference to a post in the GAF NPD thread back in June 2008, in which many Sony faithful were more than excited about MGS4's sales performance. Screencap:
