SEGA Europe: AVP fastest selling game this year
« on: February 22, 2010, 10:47:26 AM »
Quote from: Segabits
SEGA of Europe have just tweeted that Aliens vs. Predator is the fastest selling game of the year, in  the UK. This means it beat heavy weight titles like Mass Effect and even their own  Bayonetta.

“News just in; AvP is the fastest selling game this year and also no.1 in the all-formats chart here in the UK.“

I guess critical reception is not needed to sell megaton copies, you just need to sprinkle some badass license characters and watch it explode.

I blame FatalT, personally. :punch

Hasn't it been scientifically proven that Brits have the worst taste in everything?

I'm not sure about scientifically, but they sure make it clear enough by themselves that we should stop paying attention to everything that's popular over there.

Additionally, I'm pretty sure this game has set a new record for the amount of paid and unpaid shills a mediocre game has ever had on NeoGAF. Dudes openly refused to post negative reviews, because hey, those guys either didn't "get" the game, or the Sega didn't pay enough for high scores.

What's slightly interesting about the Euro chart is how far Mass Effect 2 has dropped on it.

It's at #15 currently.

To put that in perspective Forza 3 is #12 and Bayonetta is #16.

So it might be reasonable to think it did a huge first week and then dropped like most games do although something like MW 2 is still at #6. New Super Mario Bros is at #4 and even Army of Two is at #10.

Edit: Although technically this is an all formats chart I believe so you would generally expect multi-platform games to outpace single platform games outside of Nintendo of course.

Bayonetta had a price collapse, so that explains its positioning.

How much is it now?

BestBuy.com says $59.99. Price collapse?

It's definitely sold well enough for a single platform game. Just sort of surprising to see it around Forza (another single platform franchise) and the different weight certain franchises carry between the UK and the American market.

Well, you can't really expect a WB company to make a FOX game. Bummer, but hey. I'm still trying to understand why in the hell SEGA settled for ever-shitty Rebellion.

A lot of these things come down to budget. Rebellion doesn't cost alot. And they have experience with this license. And the sales have been good. From a budget perspective SEGA made the right call here which is different from a gamer perspective. ( I didnt like that demo at all so if the final game is representative of that, then I'll pass)

Oh fuck, I just remembered that Rebellion made a AvP title in 2007. Wonder if everyone thought that was better than reviewers thought too.

This is like the 3rd or 4th AVP game they have done over the history of that company.

AVP has been at the top or in 2nd place on the Steam chart for about a week now.  Its also ranking high on Amazon.  No way is it going to keep selling well in the long term, but I think Sega (and especially Rebellion) lucked out major here.

I tip my hat to you good sir.

I've finished up the Predator campaign and working on the Marine now. Online is excellent when you get a good group together.

Great, now it's like we have our very own MMaRsu/slasher_thrasher21 duo

Also, this is awesome

Quote
Kingsley noted that the game has received "three totally shit reviews by some Americans, which is a bit odd," adding that some of the reviews were "inexcusably bad." Said Kingsley, "If you discount those poor reviews AvP is averaging high for us."

So, uh, if you ignore the negative reviews, then the critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive!

GameSpy, Gamespot, Game Informer, Giant Bomb, and 1up. That's five, not three, Kingsley. Learn to count.
