Lets not get too far. It's top tier... but imo, not the best.

I enjoyed Devil Survivor way more than any other RPG on the system. Granted I've never been a big fan of any of Square-Enix's games and still haven't played Soma Bringer.

Maybe if we include Pokemon Platinum, but I play Pokemon for entirely different reasons...

if i can elaborate on my meh...

- horrible repetitive generic rock music spread trough most of the game,i especialy dislike the standard battle theme

- i can't help but think that SRPG are repetitive and boring in their structure, unless they are N1 ichi game in which case the zany story and the power leveling ends up making for it,this holds true here too
- that said this game has tons of horrible rescue mission where you have to protect some NPC from getting his ass kicked, one particulary stupid spoilerish example
spoiler (click to show/hide)
you have to rescue some NPC but the same instant you defeat every enemy on the map,a boss appear and you have to escape, guess what happen if you defeat everyone while the NPC are still on the map?
[close]
- i really couldn't care about the story, the big boobed chick complains that "this is horrible" and the smart guy says something smart and then you kick some demon ass so you can save someone (most of the time yourself) and it basicaly goes like this until near the end of the game
- demon acquisition method is dumb, basicaly since you never run out of money, you have infinite access to all the demons you want
- i liked the battles since it's basicaly nocturne battle system but seriously i just disliked everything else about it

This game has way more strategy than any of N1's games.  Shit, N1's games are a prime example of a SRPG that requires no strategy whatsoever.  Devil Survivor requires you to carefully plan your teams, fusions, and setups for each battle.  You can't just powerlevel your way through, you need to have good teams and know what you're getting into.  The game is really well balanced, even if you have powerful monsters you'll just barely win some battles.

I really need to play through it again and get the other endings.

I do agree that the soundtrack isn't up to the normal high-quality SMT standards.

Oh my God.  I'm trying for the neutral path and I just did the battle on day 6 where
spoiler (click to show/hide)
you have to defeat the angels, demons AND not let the civilians die OR escape.

Fuck I got destroyed. :rofl

Edit:  lol, it looks like I might be fucked with the neutral path anyway.

I let Keiskue die and that locks Atsuro's path and I don't think I've buttered Gin up enough to get on his side.

Hmm.  I haven't gotten around to playing it but I heard from all the other importers that it's much tougher than a normal SMT because of the escort missions which are brutally evil.

SMT in general has been pretty dumbed down/easy post SMT3.  SJ is the first real challenge since then.

Honestly this game has a morality system that is probably better than any recent RPG efforts.  It really doesn't knock you over the head with obvious "good" or "bad" choices, although things are quite a bit more pronounced than from what I played in Nocturne.

Most of the escort missions are fairly easy if you have demons with Devil Speed and Switch.  The only downside is that you have to reserve your slots for a B tier demon to move in faster.

i know i wasn't implying that N1 games require strategy just that i enjoy power leveling much more than moving a bunch of guys on a grid, and really i gave each of my character an elemental spell of each element and i was doing fine just hitting elemental weakness whenever possible,my only problem was that tech guy magic stat was so low he was basicaly worthless

they aren't that bad as long as you keep either one ghost or avian demon (increase your movement, let you ignore obstacles) but still super annoying

i stopped playing around chapter 6 so i really can't talk but from what i heard the choice mostly go like this

spoiler (click to show/hide)
option 1: OMG I HAVE BOOBS THIS IS HORRIBLE WE HAVE TO SURVIVE,LET'S ESCAPE
option 2: angel are awesome :) kill all the demons
option 3: demon are awesome  :D kill all the demons so you can rule them
option 4: nobody is awesome  :maf kill everyone

nocturne philosophies were fascinating as a moral system

Yeah but
spoiler (click to show/hide)
God is an overbearing prick who thinks he knows whats best for everybody and the demons want total freedom but at the cost of Hell on Earth.

The neutral path is the "best" path, but it is also the hardest (which I have pretty much screwed myself out of).

Honestly the morality system seems like a more pronounced version of Nocturne, but I didn't play that game more than a few hours to really make a judgment about it (I borrowed it from a friend who wanted his copy back).

Yeah, they've definitely mainstreamed the SMT games down in general, but I guess that's the point of the non-mainline games.  Either way, Devil Survivor is still super-simple.  Only one type of physical attack, no tier-2 spells, you can choose anything you want when fusing demons and can use magatama to more or less fully customize them.  You also get really powerful skills near the end of the game which more or less make you unstoppable if you use them correctly (well, all SMT games are like this, but it's really easy to get the ones in DS).  The auction system is too easy to exploit.  Free battles don't use up any time so there's no real sense of urgency if you're at a tough fight.  It's too easy to crack all of the skills you want.  It's almost impressive that they managed to make a very well-designed and challenging game with these features!  I don't mind the changes, but I do hope that they don't keep going down the path of streamlining it too much.  SMT games are all about making difficult choices for balancing and not being able to get exactly what you want without spending a lot of effort!

The whole idea of having to work within a time limit was a really interesting one, but at the same time with good planning you can more or less do everything that needs to be done.  I'd have liked it if you constantly had to make choices, bad things happening at multiple places at the same time.

I think that the Digital Devil Saga games hit the "sweet spot" of balancing difficulty with user-friendliness.  Still, I was really happy with this game when all was said and done.

The escort missions are a pain, and can be impossible if you don't have the right skillset and strategy.  You just need to restart the battle with a better setup though, which isn't exactly a foreign concept for SMT games.

There are two 'neutral' paths.  Gin and Atsuro.  Gin's route resets everything to normal whereas Atsuro uses the demons for the benefit of mankind or something

I read the routes last night because I was going to be livid if I was shoehorned into Yuzu's. :lol
