So I have a rich family all of a sudden...
« on: February 24, 2010, 10:28:16 PM »
I had a falling out with my mother about 4 years ago, so I've actively avoided having to deal with her bullshit.  But circumstances have caused me to turn to her for help after a fruitless job search.  So she starts talking about she'll buy me a car.... and take care of all the payments... cool.  I then learn she's buying a new house in addition to the house she's currently paying mortgage on IN ADDITION to the house she's renting in virginia.  Growing up we weren't supposed to ask what she was making, and she would never tell.  We stop by some acquantice of her and they're discussing their retirement pensions and disabilty claims and whatnot.  That's when she drops the bombshell.   All in all she's looking at 200k year between her pension, disability, and her placement at some job in Ohio.  Jesus fuck. I remember when we had to settle for seedy housing off base and walking out to having our car stolen.  Of course she bitches constantly about the welfare queens taking all her money and its all Obama's fault blah blah blah.  All in all, good for her.  Am I rich by association now? :omg :smug

She hates videogames.  And I lean liberal, but I don't like labels because I don't necessarily agree with everything democrats preach and whatnot.

I actually don't have an urge to start asking for things. I'd rather be working if only because being unemployed is excruciatingly boring.

I have a miserly grandma worth millions that nearly everyone in our family is anxious to have die off.  Unfortunately she's in excellent shape and continues to show no signs of wear and tear.  I'm not getting my hopes up because she seems like the type of person who would donate it all to charity just to spite her kin.

I have plenty of games I could be playing on the wii.  I hate to break it to you guys, but shit like mass effect and ugh whatever is all the rage with internet nerds these days usually don't appeal to me.  I won't deny that I want to play with some of the new toys in Modern warfare 2 though.

I had a grandmother like that just die from cancer last year.  Well, she wasn't worth MILLIONS but it was several hundred thousand dollars for sure, plus a house, two cars, and a bunch of jewelry.  She left all four grandkids each $100 and gave all of the rest of it to some animal shelter that had kicked her out of it's membership like 8 years ago because she was a bitch.  Haha.

Sitting on your rear end all day writing banal fantasy is the best sort of "kind of" employment. That's right, livin' the dream.

Sitting on your rear end and writing the next Nebula winner sounds better.

Nebula? If you're going to dream you might as well dream big. I think you know what I'm talking about.

That's what I'm saying!  But apparently its different that her and her friend are trying to play the military system to their benefit.  The dude says he's going to collect social security when the time comes to! What the hell are you going to do with all that money!

Can't double dip. The moment either SSA or VA find out, that dude is fucked! He can have VA of SSA offset the amount he gets though, say he will get $1200 from SSA but only $600 from VA, then he can get all $1200 from SSA or get $600 from each. If he were to collect $1200 from SSA and $600 from VA, when it's found out, and it will be, he will have to pay all the excess money back, generally by garnishing his benefits. If that doesn't suit him, he could always spend his "sunset" years in federal prison for fraud.

As for disability and employment. VA has varying levels of disability that increase in 10% increments up to 100% and for the really messed up people they can get special month compensation above the 100% rate. You can be 0%, 10%, 20%, etc. disabled and as long as your disability stems from something that occurred on active duty (service connected disability) it doesn't matter how much money you make through employment, and it's TAX FREE.

VA Also has a pension program for veterans who's income is below the poverty level (about $1100 per month and again tax free) and have a low net worth (not including house). this benefit is entirely dependent upon income and the total of the veteran's income and pension cannot exceed the max rate (about $1100 per month). This benefit can be granted when a veteran can't work due to NON-service connected disabilities.

PS: I work at VA.

My dad was somehow getting SSA and VA at the same time.  He was 100% disabled (service related).  When I received his paperwork after his death, they actually said 160% disabled.  I don't know what that means.  But he was getting retirement from the air force, his VA disability check and a SSA check.

But he had a lot of weird circumstances due to a lawsuit with the air force (backpay for disability and retirement, 3 botched surgeries).  So I don't know if it was all out of the norm.  He received a lot of weird benefits like his GI bill extended to me (all his children actually) because of it and up until we were 18 we received like $1000 a month in our name because of it.

If he was "160%" then he was getting special monthly compensation. When a vet is 100% (or more) disabled, his benefits extend to his dependents.

His VA benefits were probably way higher than his SSA, thus he could have collected all his SSA and still been able to collect compensation from VA. Say SSA was $1000/mo and his VA compensation was $3600/mo. He could collect the 1k from SSA and an additional 2.6k from VA for a grand total of 3.6k, but not more.

Make sense?
