Sidescroller...maybe.  Prinny was good, but I don't think this will be Prinny style.

But hey, still better than another Disgaea!

EA made some online passes free:

- Alice (full original Alice - requires disc)
- Kingdom of Amalur (extra quests and arena stuff)
- Dragon Age 1 (Stone Prisoner DLC - extra quests and character)
- Dragon Age 2 (Black Emporium DLC - extra quests and bonus items)
- Shift 2
- Bulletstorm
- Bad Company 2
- Skate 3
- Mass Effect 2 Cerberus Network (I believe gives you extra quests and character)
- Medal of Honor

What? Huh, no... Why would they put those out and then turn off the multi?

The likelihood is that someone internal to EA clued them in on the value of network externalities, and the fact that online passes definitively limit the number of people playing EA games online, and therefore weaken their market worth while ostensibly strengthening their opponents position (as users are playing some other, similar game which doesn't require an online pass).

i'd also like to think they did it because it was a FUCKING RIP OFF and no one was buying them anymore. seriously the prices on those shoulda been lowered years ago.

...and Cave is out of arcade/console business.

Sad for sure, but I didn't really care for their recent output as much as their older stuff.  As a non-super-hardcore shmup player, Mushi-futari & Deathsmiles1 were pretty much the last games I really enjoyed by them.  Akai Katana was cool too, though I don't remember it much at this point, just didn't get into DDPFK, Muchi, Pink Sweets, Deathsmiles 2x and DDPSDJ probably won't keep my interest for more than a week or two.  Ketsui, Espgaluda, Mushi-Futari were my favs by far.

SaiDaiOuJou makes for a apt epitaph. Intense, uncompromising shooting gameplay drenched in lolis.

Akai Katana Shin was fantastic btw. Not so much the arcade mode or it's enhanced variant (neither of which I liked), but the Slash/Shin mode is really great.

don't cry tiesto, apparently it's the result of a mistranslated business article saying that Cave bunched up all their development teams into one big happy family when moving to new offices and that they might focus harder on social games and all that junk they do outside of shoot games. Or something like that, I dunno.

They are still comparable to a bedridden 90 year old surviving their fifth stroke though, so I don't really think it's too long until they kick the bucket.

If I'm not mistaken they released limited edition (pre-order/first print run) DLC at one point. I don't think business is one of Cave's strong suits.

It's more sandbox/grind RPG just like all the other FFT games. This is exactly what you wanted, right? Or do you not like the art style?

Yeah, it seems like Cave is still alive but SDOJ first day sales are shit (most people bought the LE, normal version tanked), so probably dead pretty soon anyhow.

Not many people are willing or able to import a Japanese 360 (that will still run you back $400 last I checked) and pay $80 per import game. Cave games aren't very modern or marketable to your average gamer, either.

Didn't G.Rev say they fucked up by releasing Strania for XBLA rather than retail because they sold the same anyway?

The entire genre is moribund. I just wish we'd get some more nice looking robot n spaceship games before all we're left with is ZUN and his lolis.

I think the genre is dead because they kept trying to make the games TOUGHER and MORE HARDCORE for a single group of their players that was pro and wanted to be continually challenged with newer, tougher shmups.  I like shmups a fucklot and have bought and played pretty much every one from the PS2 days on (Dodonpachi was my first "modern" shmup after growing up on Raiden II at the arcades with the awesome purple laser), and I'm not even that bad at them.  I'm no hardcore pro, but I can get through few stages in on a single life and enjoy the heck out of it.

But as each Cave shmup came out, they kept feeling tougher and tougher and just stopped being fun and more frustrating.  Hell I have a hard time even seeing WTF IS GOING ON in SaiDouJou.  I went back and popped Espgaluda 2 back in and it was like night & day how simple the visuals were and easy to keep track of the bullets and your little 1 pixel hitbox.  But the latest games are just visual chaos and ridiculous patterns everywhere and in return you get bullet cancelling or invincibility or some gimmick to counter it.  I dunno, I don't find that fun.  Ketsui is challenging (so is Espgaluda I/II), but they're easy to visually track and don't have too horrible bullet spam for a few stages because there's no gimmick and it's just about dodging (in Esp, slow dodging).

I feel like the first Death Smiles was a good attempt to bring their games back to accessible levels for the non-5%ers of pro-leaderboard level shmup players.  It still had good challenge to try to 1CC, and the selectable difficulty levels per stage were great.  The ability to make your own stage order kept it fresh on replays, and it actually worked in a half-decent plot in a non-intrusive way.  And guess what?  It also sold really well (for a Cave shmup on consoles at least).  So what do they do?  Try to make more accessible shmups?  NOPE, BACK TO HARDCORE MODE (and make a budget half-assed ugly 3d Deathsmiles on the side).

;_;

And yeah, I don't think price has much to do with it.  The audience is limited at around 20-30k players.  95% of them will pay $80 or $15 and don't care which amount the price is.  Same with system choices.  Shmup players go where the system that has shmups is.  I seriously think it's about accessibility.  Though at the same time, the more accessible the game is, the more it should be on the platform(s) where the most people are to capitalize on that.  Death Smiles would have done pretty well on PS3 I think.

Impossible bullet walls + shields/invincibility is a sign of trying to appeal to casuals, imo.

I can see that angle.  But I dunno, at least for me it turns me off.  I don't feel like surviving bullets by shields/invincibility frames is satisfying at all.  Feels like cheating.  Whereas dodging through difficult, but doable bullet walls is extremely satisfying.

Maybe it is how they're trying to approach casuals, but it could just be a misguided way to do so.  Like the moe stuff, which I honestly don't think has a big effect on sales in such a small market.

They need to focus more on making it more fun for casuals, rather than give a shield for the bullet curtains.  that shit is just dumb.

why don't they try something interesting like a shmup RPG with customizable ships and some simple but interesting mechanics that lend themselves to randomly generated levels, relying on not just bullet hell, but other interesting "skill shot" type mechanics.  with stats.  *jiiiiiizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*

oh and please turn the little girls back into spaceships please.  I don't know how the space ships turned into lolis, but I assume it was just some clerical error in the art department.  please fix it.  now.

Jamestown received some praise for it's difficulty by the press. That game asked you to play through increasingly higher difficulties to unlock more stages. it also had a separate challenge mode with small bite-sized scenarios that both were challenging and taught skills that would help the player get better at the main game (killing an enemy during a specific animation or destroying the parts of an enemy before the killing it garners bonus points, etc).

Of course, Jamestown was made by a very small group of indie developers, so their success might not be transferable to a larger business with employees who maybe doesn't feel like living on instant ramen for years on end. But I feel like things like that (low difficulty being perceived as the default as opposed to 'novice mode' and challenge mode that teaches the player) could be very useful in at the very least retaining the casuals that do pick up the games.

And yes, pls go back to spaceships n robots. srs.

Supersoldiers in exoskeletons with green highlights and matching light-Katanas fighting a data-load war against a horde of blue-ish insect-creatures led by some sort of blue behemoth. Then the reinforcements drop in, the Radeon Cchapterores.
