even beyond that, it's such an asinine question. it's like asking a person "so how long you been watching movies?" it's an embarrassingly stupid question, but her earnest response turns out to be equally stupid and embarrassing.

at least she helps out mentally disabled folk, that's pretty heroic I really don't know what to think of this person. every answer she gives contradicts the feeling I get from the last one. assists the mentally disabled, has two chihuahuas and calls them her "children",  is married and her and her husband live with her parents, her husband apparently lives with a gasmask on his face and looks like this

I could've lived the rest of my life never knowing necromancyqueen but now? just... :mindblown

I think part of the problem is that there's this perception that video games are somehow inherently different than board games or even card games. Fundamentally it's still the same shit; you're playing a mental activity with rules for the purpose of entertainment.

Everyone plays games, has been since the dawn of time, and will continue until we destroy ourselves. Just because it's on your TV doesn't make it any different.

What do you all think about Tales of Zestria?

I bailed on Xillia about 10 hours in because the shop system, fields, battle system were shallow and boring.  Didn't play Xillia 2.  Thinking about giving Tales another shot with Zestria since there isn't much coming out this winter/spring next year.  Been a while since I played a traditional 3d jrpg and it looks pretty alright from the trailer.

Went to the FLEA MARKET again.

The same booth had everything HALF OFF. So I picked through everything with a fine toothed comb, looking for stuff.

Left with:

- Sneakers (XBX)
- Sudeki (XBX)
- Evergrace (PS2)
- Disaster Report (PS2)
- Raw Danger (PS2)
- Syphon Filter 2 (PSX)
- Syphon Filter 3 (PSX)
- CIMA: The Enemy (GBA)
- Bubble Bobble: Old & New (GBA)

Made my way bregrudgingly through Graces and Xillia. The last Tales I remotely enjoyed was Vesperia.

I'll give Hearts its day in court, but the only way I look twice at Zestiria is if they've learned how to make Dungeons again.

Hearts is not the answer here.  Hearts has no dungeon design, it's only saving grace on DS was the battle system which is completely different on the Vita so who knows if that's even good anymore.

I mean at this point I play Tales games simply because they are console jrpgs that aren't just "here's cute girls".

It's just they leave so much to be desired. I've never cared for a Tales plot and the worlds are all very boring. Generic jrpg fantasy. They all seem to blend together. Xillia 2 seemed interesting with it's more modern world, but I here that falls apart with the re-use of environments.

They said the new one would be more open world. I'm not quite sure what that means, but either way I'm cautious. The world in Xilla was the worst part. Completely bland environments connected the un-interesting looking towns and dungeons. So if they can't even make linear worlds cool, why would I believe they could make an open world?

As for the combat, well it will probably be fun enough. I think in the end Star Ocean 4 has beaten anything in Tales. SO4 is so fast paced and responsive with the blindside mechanic so satisfying to pull off. The last few Tales games are kind of sluggish compared to SO and lack a cool mechanic like blindside. Additions like Xillia's party link thing were superfluous.

I also don't know why Vesperia continues to look like the best looking Tales game.

In the end it will probably be another Tales game, though there's not that much to go by/

I didn't expect any different at this point, but I'd been waiting on the fan translation long enough that I was going to play it regardless.

oscar's got it right, tales is the cancer of the RPGs as they say

nothing more relentlessly mediocre than tales, a joke of a franchise that only receives attention nowadays because every other worthwhile rpg series on consoles is dead

I wish I could hate Tales to death!

I wish I could forget they exist! When your point of comparison is that kind of undeniable garbage though...

Tales just has this specific kind of mediocrity seeping out of every pore that's really irritating, sprinkled with little bits of the pandery smut in other games that's just depressing.

Edit: Dammit stop typing what I'm saying first Oscar!

tales is a hit or miss series, though i guess the miss are more than the hits...

- the original tales of phantasia for example is a decent game, colorfull, full of stuff to find, a lot of nice music, with character that are actualy tolerable... the best way to play it is the fantranslation of the psx version, there is a snes fantranslated version but not only you have to deal with the super high encounter rate but the translator took some liberty (mostly infamous a line where a character says "i bet she fucks like a tiger!") there is an official gba version too but not only the conversion is awfull, the translation is hilarious-bad with the war of ragnarok being translated into "the war of kangaroo"

- tales of destiny would be the sequel on psx, back in the day i wanted to try to get into this but i really couldn't get past the graphics which somehow looks WORSE than tales of phantasia and the horrible load times

- tales of eternia is a lot better, bigger sprite, decent load times... the character tend to whine a little and the story is a little clichè (stop me if you hear this one! an amnesiac girl fall from the sky!) but really look at those 2D backgrounds, so lovely :heart there is even a section where the character go underwater in a submarine :heart :heart :heart

one pet peeve i have with the game is that the final boss take forever to kill, after you kill him he pulls a final move that you need to counter by making a special motion on the joypad BUT THE GAME NEVER TELLS YOU

- tales of symphonia really got more attention for being a gamecube game than anything else but even then,it's a decent game as long as you don't look too much at the character talking considering half of their dialogue is either HYPER-RACISM (something that will plague tales games for a while) or lloyd worrying about colette, the colorfull cellshaded graphics and combo-centric system are what makes the game worth playing,i played this back on the GC days (when namco didn't want to bother translating the skit resulting in the character flopping their mouth like dead fishes) but ehy it got a recent ps3 release!

- symphonia 2 is TRASH, avoid

- tales of rebirth is one of the games that never came and never got fantranslated, i kinda want to play it because it looks like a cool 2D rpg but on the other hand...

this is so stupid that even namco itself poke fun at it

spoiler (click to show/hide)
by the way he says "claire" around 250 times
[close]

- there is a tales of destiny 2 in the same "cool 2D tales that aren't in english" too, one curiosity about the game is that the villain is voiced by a VA called norio wakamoto, i know he's pretty famous but i have absolutely no idea what he ever did... youtube to the rescue!

- tales of legendia... fun fact: tales of legendia was my contender for "worst rpg ever" before i played neptunia

- tales of abyss, i guess hidden here there is a decent rpg but i really hate every single character in this game with a burning passion, the way the game over-dramatize everything is really dumb and the combat system has this dumb system where spell you cast leave circle behind which you are supposed to abuse by standing in them and using special move while inside but it never works properly

- the DS titles... tales of innocence and tales of hearts are translated, i tried innocence and tought it was garbage

- tales of vesperia is the best tales game out of them all, if you ask me it's also the best JRPG to come out of the ps3/360 generation

- tales of graces has awfull dungeon, boring character,a really tacked on crafting system, basicaly the battle system is the only saving grace (pun not intended) of the game

- lastly xillia... i played it for 3-4 hours and then walked away bored... there was nothing that was clearly awfull but on the whole it was just generic and it had really empty enviroment, so yeah i guess recently the number of stinkers increased

I guess we're forgetting that Hyperdimension Neptunia and Ar Tonelico exist.

the first 2 ar tonelico games are decent if you can somehow get past the notion that anything that feature fanservice is pure poison, it's the third game that's awfull as fuck

There are worse things, sure.  There are worse things than Kemco games on mobile.  Tales is *just* good enough that you'll reach for it if you're hungry.  Whereas most of the garbage from NISA and Marvelous shouldn't be touched unless you have a shit-eating fetish.

i had fun with the god and fate paradox, witch and the hundred knight was awfull... i haven't heard anything good about that princess arcadia game either... i guess they at least they haven't run disgaea into the ground (well i guess deeper into the ground) by announcing disgaea v yet

- CIMA: The Enemy (GBA)

I loved this game, even if the pathfinding was terrible. Very unique cross between an RTS and an action RPG, in a way this was almost like a precursor to tower defense? (you have to lead townspeople through a maze while defending them).

yeah definitely, you don't really get games like those anymore. action-adventures are so bogged down with cinematics and set-piece moments these days instead of having challenging level design and kick ass, memorable boss fights. the PS2 is like a treasure trove of awesome action-adventure games.
