Hey, y'know the Spider-Man games go on sale pretty frequently. I haven't played one since PS2, and I really enjoyed that. But when the sale is on, I have NO IDEA which ones are good and which ones are to be avoided.

If I had to choose just one to get, which one should I try?

Nearly as importantly, which ones are a sack-of-crap?

Since the beginning of last gen?  I'd rank 'em up like this:

1) Amazing Spider-Man: This is probably the most balanced of the crop.  Some of the other games do certain things better, but this is the best overall experience.  Open world, some proper designed levels within it, decent combat system.

2) Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions: This is a really good Spider-Man game, but it doesn't have an open world, so some people don't dig on it as much.  What it does have is a bunch of properly designed levels, plus four different Spider-Men with slightly different movesets.  This game is fanservice overload, and it's actually pretty funny at times.  The voice cast is awesome - Neil Patrick Harris (MTV Spidey) voices Amazing Spidey, Christopher Daniel Barnes (90s animated Spidey) voices Noir Spidey, Josh Keaton (Spectacular Spidey) voices Ultimate Spidey, and Dan fuckin Gilvezan (Spidey and His Amazing Friends) voices Spidey 2099.  I love this game.

3) Web of Shadows: This one's got some problems, but it's got a really good "Spidey"-feel combat system, and the story is packed with stupid Marvel fanservice.  It's also funny doing the "bad" path, cuz man, you get to see some hilariously out-of-character shit.  Main faults are that there are no actual designs, side missions suck, and things get a little janky at times.  Open world.

4) Spider-Man 3: Open world, shit combat, shit side-missions, horrible set pieces, bad qtes, based on a crapsack movie.  Nope.  Just nope.

5) Spider-Man: Edge of Time: Another stage-based game like Shattered Dimensions, this was done by the B-team while the main guys were working on Amazing, and it shows.  There's a bit of good fanservice in it, and it's basically a Spidey 2099 game, but the stage design is bad and the whole thing just feels like an expansion pack, and not a very good one, either.

edit: forgot friend or foe.  it's poo-gas made for the kiddies.  it's funny at times, but definitely not worth playing.

Haha, that's gotta be the result of multiple upgrades synergizing. I can't imagine "quad knives that spin outwards in all directions and turn into 12 knives" can be a single item.

That's pretty awesome though, because in the original most items didn't synergize like that very well at all. If you got too many weird things, they would just overwrite each other. You couldn't get Quad Shot + Technology (lasers) for instance, the lasers would just erase your quad shot.

There was the awesome combo of My Reflection & Ipecac though, that worked exactly like you think it would (unfortunately).

yeah I think it's really important that they're diversifying the kinds of builds you can finish the game with. Me and all my LAN friends got hardcore into the original game and found ourselves beating the game with the same style of builds over and over. You had to have flying, some sort of piercing shot and really good damage buffs if you wanted to beat Sheol or the Cathedral. It got old pretty quick.

Awesome! I remember being interested in this game years and years ago, always thought it'd be too obscure to get a fan translation. Which reminds me, I still have to play the Energy Breaker and Emerald Dragon fan translations. Neverland's death was the most tragic game company death these past few years

Love the "get this", like it's surprising when a creatively-exhausted franchise does a period piece installment with suspiciously similar characters.

well it surprised me! beside it give them a chance to expand more the history behind the fey clan or to put wacky rendition of real-life historical figure's (but i guess no oda nobunaga since the game take place in the meiji era?)

maybe they can feature in the shinsegumi?

No, no Nobunaga. Since it is Meiji, and he has a sword, isn't he basically a cop and not a lawyer? No Shinsengumi because there is no bakufu and the Boshin War is over. Expect a lot of disgruntled samurai though.

I have No faith in Bioware.  Will this be good? It would be nice, but whatever. They always talk up a storm and then never deliver. Except the last few games not only failed to deliver on thier ambitions, but were just crap games in general.

They seem to be actually trying with this 3rd game, but I'll have to wait to see what actual people think and not crappy reviews that are always eager to blow Bioware and give crap like DA2 good reviews.

There are just way too many RPGs right now that I'm more interested in to really be excited about DA3. And definitely not at full price. I'll let the dust settle and see what The Bore thinks of it.
