An attack in a turn based rpg should last 1-2 seconds, even large spells. A turn should last 5-8 seconds, 10 max. A battle should last 20-25 seconds, 1 minute max if it's a regular battle. Boss battles, longer for obvious reasons.

Short and sweet.

Uh, that battle was 25 seconds.  The ENTIRE BATTLE is one attack in SRW.  So that 20 seconds you were complaining about?  That's it.  That's the entire battle.  The enemy is gone after that.  Was shorter than your SMT battle.

Anyhow, this is silly.  How can you even compare rpg battles to srpg battles.  It's completely different.  SRW is like Fire Emblem and the animations are about the same length as Fire Emblem and just as skippable.  Do you have a problem with FE's battle animations?

magoose - I think whether or not that's part of the appeal of RPGs depends on when you came into them.  Elaborate spell animations weren't a typical part of RPGs before FF7.  For me, and I guess most people who liked the genre before things got prettier, the satisfaction of the "big boom" was watching the numbers go higher.

Might point to why I never had a problem not seeing my guys in battle.  I started with pen and paper, then played Wizardry and Ultima.  I was already visualizing things with my imagination, so picturing my guys was never a problem and still isn't.

I actually find the extremely elaborately animated RPGs (like super robot wars, monolith's handheld RPGs, and unskippable long shit like bahamut ff7) hard to stick with.  The animations are GREAT the first couple times but they get boring fast, and even when they're skippable, I find games that put that much emphasis on big long gorgeous attacks are usually deficient in some way under the hood, so to speak.

it doesn't have to be extremely elaborated but it has to be satisfying, like suikoden,it's not a complicated animation but seeing your hero jump in front of enemy, swing his staff and then bops the enemy in the head is satisfying

a 2 second scratch animation like the one above it's not, and almost all first person rpg are like that

I play pen and paper rpgs all the time. It has nothing to do with lack of imagination. It's also not a mental glitch to not be into dungeon crawlers which is what most of these fps rpgs are.

Most of the time these FP jrpgs seem to have incredibly boring environments. It sure was that way in Persona 1. Looks to be that way in Soul Hackers. The videos I've watched(because I'm interested in playing it) for EO: Untold Girl(whatever it's called) don't seem to change that view either.  When I play an rpg, I'd look to look at something pleasing.

I really want to beat every zelda game in the franchise, but skyward sword is such a turd with  fucking useless controls that I might not give it another try.

Yup...when did I say I hate all JRPGs, Himu?

Uh...yeah?  Those aren't Square games.

Why bother commenting on jrpgs at this point if 95% of them put you to sleep? You may not hate ALL jrpgs, but if 95% put you to sleep, you clearly aren't a fan. So why raise a stink?

Is illogical.

Because I have some interest and want to talk about them from time to time?  This is the kind of comment I'd expect from some GAFfot, not here on the Bore.  I am disappoint.   :-\

I dunno about all of this but I'm glad I don't have the mental glitch that keeps me from enjoying some of the best RPGs made.  I have an rl friend like Bork and Rahx (in this regard).  He's loved RPGs almost as long as I have, but he *has* to be able to see his guys.  Brains are weird.
magoose - I think whether or not that's part of the appeal of RPGs depends on when you came into them.  Elaborate spell animations weren't a typical part of RPGs before FF7.  For me, and I guess most people who liked the genre before things got prettier, the satisfaction of the "big boom" was watching the numbers go higher.

It's not that I have to see the character(s) -I prefer it- nor was I even talking about these big spell animations/summons/other crap.  I just meant basic animation.  I find it incredibly lazy when the sprites have no animation.  I can understand how this might have been a memory issue in 8-bit games, but again this seemed to be mostly a Square thing (no idea how long DQ had static sprites since I never even saw any of those 16-bit games for more than five minutes back in the day).

Dragon Quest is not a dungeon crawler.  The only thing separating DQ 8 from other DQs in the broad sense is the battle perspective.  You have no problems only seeing an arm and a gun in FPS games.  Therefore, the distinction you've made is irrational and inconsistent, which I'm comfortable calling a mental glitch.

It's not a "mental glitch."  I thought you were gonna stop talking down to people here?   :P  I think I covered it above...the difference between those types of RPGs and an FPS is that an FPS is completely animated.  But while on the subject, I prefer the third person view to the first-person view and wish all these shooters had TPS as an option.

Quote
I'm sure you enjoy many pen and paper games, but I also seriously question if they were your first experience with RPGs.  Even if they somehow were, visual representations of RPGs have existed for your whole life.  Your expectations are different.  They *have* to be.  That part was never in your hands.

How old are you, Oscar?

I'm 35.

I may have said something like that at one point, I don't know.  It's really a person-to-person basis.  If a person can present some actual reasoning behind their thinking or simply owns up to having a mental glitch (like how I'm not shy about admitting my mental glitch about anime), then I'm usually okay.  But if people are going to carry on like illogical dopes and try to deny that they're being silly about things, then yes, papa spank.

OK.  I'm going to be 33 soon.  So when you were a kid, video game RPGs were certainly around.  I think my first exposure to RPGs were games on the Apple IIgs, but it may have been D&D -my older brother was into that stuff around the same time we got it- too.  Really don't have much of a point here though since your comment was in response to Rahx.  Some people are definitely more visually-oriented than others.  I think I'd definitely have to describe myself as such.  But I'd happily play text-only games like Zork and The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy back then.

I guess the TL;DR version is Bork don't like no lazy-ass non-animated sprites in games.

I'm tired of these bullshit reads of yours. You don't know what you're talking about. First, I already admitted that it was a shallow reason. 2nd, I already claimed I was interested in EO and it's ilk and I said nothing about disliking  them. I just said I'm not thrilled about first person dungeon games, which are not at all like FPS where the perspective seems to actually effect level design, presentation, and controls. Three, I said nothing bad about other 3DS games like SMTIV or Pokemon X, just Bravely Default which regardless of whatever system it would be on would be a medicore game.

I mean jesus what more do you want? I'm not going to start playing games I'm not interested in for no reason and unlike what seems to be most of the bore I'm not limited to a few genres from one country. I don't just play Japanese games or even console games. I'll play western games from Civilization to whatever on top of Japanese games which I have no problem playing niche games. I mean for christ sake I've been trying to play actual games in Japanese now on the PSP and on the PS3. I clearly bought the 3DS so I'm not against handhelds if I have two with growing libraries. I can't help that 3DS doesn't wow me. I can't help that I don't like playing on handhelds. It's not like I would be an amazing fan of any 3DS game if it was on a console. BD would'nt be better. I don't really care about Fire Emblem since I'm not a fan of srpgs. So I'm not a Fan of Nintendo games in general which has nothing to do with not trying them. Hell, I grew up with a N64 it's just what Nintendo puts out dosen't fit with me. Still did'nt stop me from buying Sin and Punishment 2 or the few niche Nintendo games that would interests me. I can't help if my interests don't meet with your approval. That dosen't make me dumb or narrow minded.

Nah it's no problem. I'm just being my panties in a twist.

Hey I'm a bit narrow minded. But hey I've been enjoying handheld games a bit during my train rides. I think I should have gotten an actual XL though. They have better sound right? The 2DS' sound is really low, even with head phones. I wanted an entry level system, but I may have to get a better one eventually.

Oscar, SRW are deficient in that the difficulty is a joke.  Each map you take out the grunts while building up morale to unlock more powerful attacks and then take on some boss.  It's pretty hard to lose a unit and there's no perma-death.  You can one-hit kill most grunts and bosses just require piling on them for a turn with a few units.

The games are more like VN srpgs that you play for the story, which is good every map, and the animations are just nice bonuses along the way.  Plus it's fun having an srpg team of cross over characters, building them up and destroying enemies from other series.

Yeah, I can dig that.  Kind of how I really enjoy Spider-Man games, not because they play great (they're usually competent at best), but because I really enjoy the fanservice.

Hey, y'know the Spider-Man games go on sale pretty frequently. I haven't played one since PS2, and I really enjoyed that. But when the sale is on, I have NO IDEA which ones are good and which ones are to be avoided.

If I had to choose just one to get, which one should I try?

Nearly as importantly, which ones are a sack-of-crap?

They're making a new Petit Computer for the 3DS: http://www.inside-games.jp/article/2014/04/08/75846.html

If you're unfamiliar with the "series" it's a BASIC programming tool that's geared for game development. It's basically a portable NES development tool but people have made some cool shit like an 8-bit Minecraft clone, Flappy Bird, or a full-on JRPG.

I'm interested because it reminds me of back in school pretending to pay attention in Biology while I'm fucking around on my TI-89 making sweet TIE fighter shoot 'em ups.
