Hidden behind the volcano of heresy that is modern day PC gaming in Japan; there was a thriving and excellent PC gaming scene in the late 80's and early 90s.
8-bit PCs in particular were rife with awesome games on shit like the PC-88/98, MSX/2, X68000, and even the FM Towns.
I first moved to Japan in 1993, and it seemed like I was on a different planet for PC stuff. I think DOS V or some DOS variant was the predominant OS. No-one here seemed interested in Windows, pre-Win95. There were all manner of odd PCs, all in weird, proprietary cases. Never saw much s/w at the time, but I wasn't looking.
When I moved back again in 2001, I was a PC-head, and trying to find PC games here was like inquiring discretely about a leper colony.
When I last went to Akiba, which was maybe 7-8 years ago now, homebrew PC games were all over the place, displayed prominently, even in front of stores, in attract mode.
