Has anyone like me given up video game reviews (except for Dunkey reviews  :rejoice )

All those writers seem too far up their own ass. They review everything but the game and its mechanics itself.
I don't want to read your take on colonialism. I just want to know if Tomb Raider is good.

My other hate with reviews are video reviews where the majority is just looking st people talking.

Show the game!

That said, there is exactly one website who’s reviews I trust apart From Dunkey.

Metro Gaming. I realize it’s basically the entertainment section of some weird UK tabloid, but they have great reviews. Surprisingly good interviews as well. One of the only outlets that actually ask Spencer or whomever hard questions about how MS’s first party is trash.

Spiderman should only exist as a webslinging game with a high score mode and only be charged 15 bucks.  It is the best example of what's wrong with open world Ubisoft games.

I just put *insert videogame* longplay into youtube and click through it looking at some minutes of gameplay.

Then there's also small things like the hilariously bad voice acting in Shade of the Tomb Riser (Was posted in the shit thread I think) selling me on a game. The reason I got Deadly Premonition was cause I saw the dinner scene with the amazingly mixed audio. The whistling theme is already great, but when the kazoo kicks in and you can't hear the dialogue anymore. Straight masterpiece.

I have yet to play an exploration game under the modern "open world" monicker, whose exploration feels as free and rewarding as actual tightly designed maps such as Bloodborne and Super Metroid. Tracking icons and fetch quests within a generic open field alongside a highly linear story/progression is just lazy game design at this point. Even Zelda's removal of icons could only hide its crappy Ubisoft tropes for so long.

Bethesda's open-world design is generally better than most games like that, since at least it doesn't have those stupid towers that automatically unlocks all the points of interest nearby. You actually have to explore to find them.

Good luck finding actual interesting content in a modern Bethesda game though.

Should I get Spiderman?

On one hand, people I know are saying it's awesome.

On the other, the problematically positive portrayal of police officers in our current climate cannot be ignored.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also, it just looks like your normal modern open world game that has some interesting systems, but otherwise same handful of design elements (towers, follow the vapor trail, stealth mechanics) we've seen for the past decade.

Loved Asylum and thought the following games were a step down.

Got tempted for a bit, but with DQXI still sitting in my PS4 and my new PC hopefully being build soon, I'll have more than enough to handle.  :doge

doc ock just juggled shit and told me about his disease. Miles just got to FEAST. Last thing I remember doing as spidey is the big chase sequence where mr. Negative ends up stealing Devil's breath.

Did all the side content available to me from dumb minigames in the lab, to research stations, to the last Taskmaster fight. Including the big Tombstone boss fight and the corrupted teens side missions.
[close]

Overall it probably is the best Spidey game ever made, especially when it comes to the main game. I like the swinging mostly to grind exp with the trick system but I still prefer SM2's more mechanically involved swinging. I guess it's a revelation like the first two Arkham games because Spider-Man had mostly decent 3D games every now and again which this largely builds off of. While that's a lol no with any Batman game before Arkham (The Begins PS2 game was alright though).

So yeah it's very good at what it is. But been here, done that in everything it does. I'm not asking for innovation, just for them to push what they had forward a little more. Does that make sense?

Wait, you can fight them dudes in your spoiler? They're not normal missions i assume? I've been ignoring most of the side content because it's garbage.

For 99 you just get a 'Gold' Edition which is basically base game, some in-game items and season pass DLC (partly).

The 'real' collectors edition starts at 149.  :doge

Probably when companies started doing these "releases two days earlier" deluxe editions. I think pretty much every first party Microsoft game since Forza Horizon 3 has had a "Gold" edition that comes out a few days earlier and is way more expensive.  2k I'm sure has made a killing with NBA 2K doing basically the same thing.

I mean I know you get the DLC and whatnot as well, but still $100 for a game is a lot.

In the case of NBA 2K, it doesn't give you any DLC, what it gives you is not only the four days early thing, but also gives you stuff worth like a months worth of grinding to level up your MyPlayer or start your MyTeam at a way higher level than anyone else. Since most of the people in this "market" play those online, it's basically like if there was twice the cost Call of Duty that started you with half of everything in MP already unlocked.

They used to let anyone who preordered start early and also gave you gifts to advance yourself with the more expensive editions being heavier on the cosmetic unlocks especially shoes, but they cut it way down this year and only allowed you to preload four days early. A few years ago the preorder bonus let you jump like 17 levels in MyPlayer, this year it let you go up like 2.

From what I've been told by a couple 2K employees, basically nobody as a share of the market on PC actually buys the expensive versions but they're put out anyway since it's just a ingame code, but it's a huge part of the market on consoles. The virtual currency buyers are all on console too. Even with that it must still be a pretty decent number of people because the last two years they've had an open world part in the game where random online people show up and there's people at the launch "max" (you have to actually play to break the level caps and go above that) with tons of cosmetic crap on day one.

Last year they let you start four days early I think if you preordered, and within the first two hours the game was available I saw a guy who was two levels above the level cap running around with a shitload of cosmetic items already.

As an aside, 2K19 has by far the best MyCareer story they've ever written though and is straight up goofy in a good way while being arguably more realistic and legit than the "serious" ones of the past. Also features the talents of Rob Huebel, Blake Jenner, Haley Joel Osment and Michael Rapaport as excellent cac cis males. The only one from 2K18's dumb streetball story that would fit in would be the dorky failure of an agent. And maybe Hannah the PR rep.

Made me glad I once again found a preorder key for $40 through some website I never heard of before so I still haven't paid more than $40 for the series since it was on the Dreamcast. :success

though ur G-LEAGUE rival bein 86 overall and immediately averagin like 26/6/8 in the NBA is some wtf shit, total ludonarrative dissonance that ruined the immersion, pre-order cancelled, like wtf i can't even

Most dlc and season passes are so low effort that they just aren’t worth it.

A special shout out to Activision though who in their biggest franchise not only splits their playerbase with the DLC maps but still doesn't discount them as time moves forward to where even if you wanted for some reason to get all the Blops II MP DLC at this point for example, it'd still cost you like $60 during sales like that recent humble sale. While the main game has been like $20 or less. And they've been doing it for like a decade now!

As much as DICE has been getting into bullshit, at least they've still been giving away the DLCs for the BF games on Origin after some time. Much like they once patched in all the DLC to BF2 before officially moving on. (Even if their effect on kicking players out of queues has never been as bad as the CoD DLC at its worst.)
