Random Gaming Talk Thread
« on: February 27, 2010, 03:33:06 PM »
Just a thought but I noticed there are sometimes random events or gaming news that happens or just random thoughts where I want to make a snarky comment but its not worth making a new thread over and shitting up the board. And its not worth derailing that "What are you playing thread" which is pretty cool and actually serves a pretty good dedicated purpose.

Sort of like the random talk thread on the off topic side. Mods just lock it if you don't like the idea.

Anyway this tickled me recently.

Followed up by their comments.

Quote
Dead or Alive: Paradise director Yoshinori Ueda has told Eurogamer that his PSP game is not supposed to be softcore pornography nor degrading towards women, despite titillating promotional videos and a marketing slogan that reads, "Paradise in the palm of your hand."

"That's certainly not something we're intentionally going for," he said. "From our perspective, we're trying to make beautiful women, that has been the focus - we want our characters to be beautiful. The DOA characters are strong and that they look the way they do is based on trying to bring out the beauty of women."

"We're certainly not trying to degrade women. They have beautiful bodies. We're trying to show off the beauty of their bodies but we're not trying to be degrading about it - we're trying to show that they are beautiful characters."

"It's not that we were trying to make softcore porn. That's definitely not the goal."

In Dead or Alive: Paradise, bikini-clad girls take part in various paradise beach games like volleyball and going to the casino. Players can also have the girls pose for the camera and take photographs of them.

That element of the game irked America's ESRB age-ratings board, which claimed DOA: Paradise was filled with "creepy voyeurism" and "bizarre, misguided notions of what women really want". The ESRB later apologised and offered a more level-headed explanation for the mature rating.

"We know that everyone is going to have a different experience with the game - everyone has their own opinion," shrugged Ueda. "For us, the goal was really to offer a little bit of paradise to the users, and we hope that people playing the game will be able to come away with the feeling that they've visited paradise."

Ueda understands that DOA: Paradise isn't a game in "the traditional sense". "What we offer is a selection of things to play and activities to have fun with. The players have the freedom to play Paradise however they want," he said.

Dead or Alive: Paradise will be released here on 2nd April.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/doa-paradise-goal-was-not-soft-porn

Its funny to me that "soft porn" has a stigma. As if Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, or Playboy isn't "soft porn". This game occupies the same space as those products. It's just weird that we all have to tip-toe around the subject since games are supposed to be only for kids.

wow, reading the response, then watching the trailer for the first time is...perplexing.  Nothing wrong with representing women by combining beauty and power, but the trailer was clearly all sex.  Not that the game doesn't have a right to exist.  He just came off as a porn director giving some tongue-in-cheek justification to the press.

Agreed.

Which I guess is sort of what he feels he has to do because there is a natural tendency for people to backlash against these things and play the moral crusaders and "Think of the children" type bs. It's pretty clear the game and certainly the trailer is selling sex appeal. Which is honestly fine. That's what most movies are doing also otherwise why would Megan Fox be in anything. It's just a little weird because he can't be honest about it.

Seeing the Heavenly Sword thread on gaf reminded me of the old sixaxis controllers, and more about how bad the PS3 was at one time (jokes aside).

I didn't get my dual shock 3 until Uncharted; I actually imported the controller and it arrived the same day as Uncharted, a game that supported rumble.  Before this I had to use the sixaxis controller that would randomly drop the signal for 10 seconds.  It was amazing to play God of War 2 and have Kratos run off a platform because the controller was stuck.  It wasn't even an isolated issue! it seemed like everyone's sixaxis controller had the same problems.

Then there were things like no in-game xmb, so you'd get a a pop up that said you got a new message and you couldn't check it without closing the game! I remember playing Ratchet Future 1, quitting out just to see what the message was, and it was from a friend saying Mario Galaxy was so much better (he got it early)  >:(  Or not being able to do background downloading.  The Gran Turismo HD Concept or w/e it was called took damn near four hours to download and it was stuck on the download screen.  This was back when download speeds on the PS3 were incredibly slow (quite fast now).

360 was also pretty shitty when it was first released.  Ignoring the big change from old blades to newer xbox dash, I remember an update that made the blades 2 times faster.  I don't think you could do background downloading when the 360 first launched too.

even the wii got a clock and sd card support

David Jaffe doesn't care about reviews anymore...or the ones that he doesn't agree with....or he cares but he doesn't care as much as he use to or something...

Quote
David Jaffe: I don't care about reviews like I used to
Friday 26-Feb-2010 6:24 PM Twisted Metal creator says he doesn't 'connect' with the opinions of modern critics
7 Comments
God Of War creator David Jaffe has revealed that he no longer "connects" with specialist press review scores - and prefers reading fan feedback online.

Speaking to The Official PlayStation Magazine (UK), Jaffe said that games journalists are "going out of their way to praise the artistic for its own sake at the expense of video games".

He added: "Don't get me wrong - a good review makes my night, but I no longer find myself connecting with what a lot of reviewers go for and so it doesn't matter as much to me any more."

Jaffe's rumoured to be hard at work on a new Twisted Metal game, but he's yet to confirm the whispers.

UPDATE:We've clarified the original headline of this article - 'David Jaffe: I don't care about reviews' - after the man himself had a bit of a pop at it on his blog. It's okay: We can take it on the chin.

We felt that the previous headline was a fair short-form interpretation of his comments to OPM - but we're not in the business of misrepresenting people. So to be clear: Mr Jaffe does care about reviews of his games - especially when they're good ones. Just not as much as he used to.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=236787

Quote
Uhm...Ok, Am I Missing Something Here?
So this headline has been making the net game news today:

DAVID JAFFE: I DON'T CARE ABOUT REVIEWS

It comes from a phone interview I did with OPM UK.

I have not read the article yet but just based on this piece- which is what most people are linking to- does anyone see any place where I actually say I don't care about reviews?

Hey, I have not read the actual piece so it COULD be in there (not the net story but the OPM-UK print story) but I don't recall saying it and I sure don't see it in the net recap. Check out the news story on the net, see if you can find where I say I don't care about reviews.

Here is the actual quote in the piece from me:

"Don't get me wrong - a good review makes my night, but I no longer find myself connecting with what a lot of reviewers go for and so it doesn't matter as much to me any more."

To me, this sonds like I DO care about getting good reviews BUT I'm not as vested in proper media reviews as I used to be because I don't feel I connect as much as I used to to what mainstream game critics like/want/desire. That was all I was saying and I THINK I got that idea across.  Perhaps Tim Ingham who wrote the piece can let us know in an update of his story if I actually said what the headline of his piece makes it sound like I said.

That would be good.

Like I said, perhaps I did. But I don't recall. I can't imagine someone would just make something up and attribute it to me...people don't do that sort of thing, do they?

David

Minor I know and I actually can slightly understand his point but for some reason I just don't like this dude. Something bugs me about devs who constantly want to pontificate on the industry to hear themselves in the games media.

To be fair devs have a different relationship with reviews rather than the typical fanboy does but still overall I agree.

I think it's still cool to hear what these guys think.  Like, with Avatar's success it was interesting to hear what other directors thought about using 3D for their films.  Jaffe just doesn't seem like the most topical character to talk about this stuff.  Not to be rude or anything, but the last time he was relevant was five years ago.

I agree he isn't relevant anymore but I still constantly see him mentioned on all the popular gaming news sites or whenever he says something about games or the industry in general. Even his sabbatical where he said he wasn't going to talk about gaming became "news". Probably because he is active on gaming forums and with God of War 3 coming out, his name resurfaces in reference to a popular franchise.

If the new Twisted Metal is as good as 2 or Black, I'll be pretty excited for it.  Head On on PSP/PS2 is great too.

yeah, I mean if they're going to him it's not like he would turn it down, especially if he wants that coverage whenever his game comes out.  I just don't think what he says is relevant when his last two games were helping out on the Twisted Metal PSP -> PS2 port (I think) and Calling All Cars.

Twisted Metal had it's time and place 15 years ago but I've never been able to get into the series since.  People always seem to point to Twisted Metal Black as the pinnacle of the franchise but to me the only reason it was worth playing was because there was literally nothing else out there on the PS2 when it came out.  You either popped in TMB or played SSX for the billionth time.

Twisted Metal means nothing to me.

I liked Twisted Metal and Black was a good game but that style of game simply fell out of favor. Car Combat games had a short time in the spotlight before most people moved on. They mostly seem suited to XBLA/PSN type material now as they are essentially arcade games at their core.

BattleTanx was the best vehicular combat game. I used to be able to play the split-screen variant of CTF for hours. I wish they'd re-release that on XBLA, but god knows who owns the licensing rights.

yeah, it depends on the context.  MW2 and GTA4 tried to pull it off but ended up looking distinguished mentally-challenged based on what you were doing the rest of the game.

like, if it's Platoon where the difference is shooting back and stopping Johnny Drama from bashing a civilian with a shotgun, maybe.  But if it's like GTA4 where you kill people for money and innocents for fun, then turn around and grow a conscious when the game deems it the right time to, even if it is for that two minute scene, then it becomes laughably stupid.

Uncharted 1 and 2 are other examples, but those games have problems with what is in the cutscene vs in-game.

Sent a PM. In any event, what I know of this one looked well above what IW has done, but I really don't think the PSP was the right platform for it. I'd be pretty psyched if a PS3 version was announced, though, assuming it is still the same game.

Still beats the scene in which the self-healing bullet sponge is mortally wounded from a single shot. I'm not sure what can really be done about that since these are action games and it would probably suck to get mortally wounded every two seconds, but it feels silly. Recent offenders: KZ2, MW2 and Uncharted 2.

yeah, a lot of games have a huge disconnect between cutscenes and gameplay.

I thought Far Cry 2 did it really well.  Bullets felt lethal in that game, which sounds dumb but it is an exception compared to most games.

well, Far Cry 2 more for you and your teammates.  Killing enemies never mattered because those assholes were stupid lethal and it seemed like everyone wanted you dead at any cost.

meh. I'm never one who really was bothered by the disconnect between a game and cutscene because they are two separate beasts. A disconnect exists of course. But unless your game is grounded in the mundane, then there will always exist a disconnect. The cutscenes in a game like Dragon Age or Mass Effect are nothing like the game. That doesn't mean I want them to go away or necessarily line up one next to each other perfectly.

I'm not bothered by it and I wouldn't think less of a game that has that disconnect because it is the standard for games.  I certainly didn't think less of Uncharted 2 as a game from the cutscenes.  But if a game is trying to be evocative, that disconnect is a great way to kill any investment you've had in the characters and story.  In short, I only really care if it is done well, and if not, I don't mind.  I'm only bringing up these examples because of the current topic.

random gaming talk

today I woke up and had this sonic 2 song stuck in my head

yet i haven't played it probably since the mid nineties

at least it was a good one

Shame it was the first zone in the sonic franchise that had the autopilot in full force.  Seriously, chemical plant zone, beginning of the end.

It's unclear exactly what's going on at the moment, but it appears that the PlayStation Network is down and causing a whole host of related problems for PS3 systems, including 8001050F error codes, game crashes, corrupted trophy info, and even the complete inability to launch certain titles. There's no ETA on when things will get back to normal -- looks like it's gonna be a Blu-ray kind of evening for PS3 owners out there.

From a skim of the gaf thread, it seems even offline fat PS3's are affected - meaning it's in their firmware or something?

because everyone believed they would do pc only

I mean 360, PS3, and PC.  Not 360 and PS3 only.

Wow, that GAF PS3 thread sounds bad.

Kinda hilarious how nobody here noticed PS3s don't work anymore because no one here has turned on their PS3 today :P

lulz. I remember mocking somebody in a thread on GAF who actually thought it would be PC only.
