Just got off the phone with a research company that was interested in participants for a study with Namco Bandai. Specifically they wanted people that had Vita's and were heavily into fighting games. My best bet is it has something to do with Soul Calibur on Vita. Which would be awesome! I'll be playing next weekend and they asked me to bring my own vita.

Or you know, Tekken.Last year Harada seemed very interested in bringing the Iron Fist to Vita.

The idea that it's the job of the reviewer to follow the herd or contribute to the hype of a new game is what's wrong with video game reviews in the first place. Remember when the internet was up in arms because Transformers 2 got lousy reviews? Of course not, because it didn't happen. It should be the job of the reviewer to give their honest, insightful [lol game journalism] opinion and nothing more.

Greg Miller didn't give himself any favours giving it a 7.5 in every category. That reeks of lazyness and realizing that the embargo was ending soon and needing to get something up.

It's not. The problem is that this industry has been the beneficiary of so much score inflation over the last few years that if you were to pick up a magazine you'd find the average score to be an 8 or 9. This mentality is part of the reason I feel B-games are a dead or at least a dying breed. People are afraid to play something that doesn't have an 80+ on Metacritic (which just in cause your wondering, Gravity Rush is sitting at a superb 86 right now) which makes it hard for studios that don't have the budget, or the talent to compete.

I played and enjoyed a game that has a 69 on Metacritic [Risen 2]. It's absolutely ridiculous how much emphasis people put on review scores and how much effort they expend attacking people whose reviews don't fit into their personal view of how the games they like should be reviewed.

If a game looks like something I'd be willing to play, I'm interested as long as it reviews above a 40 average, because even lower than that and you run the risk of the game not even being a complete or competent product.

Sure, I like to check up on how games are being reviewed and sometimes that will play a role in whether I decided to buy the game or how much I'm willing to spend. But I don't automatically dismiss a game I'm interested in because the reviews aren't glowingly positive, nor do I automatically rush out and buy a game because its Metacritic score is 95.

There was a time and a place when reviews actually mattered for videogames but we've long since passed that point now. Games are so niche specific now that the notion of general reviews at least for hardcore types is utterly meaningless now.

For the casual crowd reviews probably do serve some general purpose but casual people don't read game reviews the way say casual movie goers read movie reviews. Also the inflatation of videogame scores while probably worse now has always kinda existed.

I read reviews to get a general sense of the technical issues (unfortunately reviews suck on this score and talking about actual game mechanics nowadays) and an idea about the general competency level of a game. I combine that with a mix of my own general interest and what people on forums or sometimes youtubers I respect are saying. So its all part of thr stew. But I almost never get mad about games I like getting bad reviews. For that to happen I would have to take them very seriously in the first place.

replace reviews with sales and you should have what any normal person feels. thats how I feel . who gives a fuck if it didn't sell well. It's not like just because it has bad sales means its shit, or it's not available to play.

My interest in sales data is separate from my interest in the actual games.  I don't think any of my favourite games have ever cracked 100k in NA.  That said, by following that data, it at least gives me an idea of whether I should expect sequels or English versions and so forth.  There is a real causality between sales and getting the games I want to play.  That is not the case with reviews, especially with outlier reviews.  Being upset that Yakuza: Dead Souls didn't even break 10k makes sense if you want to see the next one in English.  Being upset that Greg whatisname from the internet gave a game a review score lower than the average doesn't make any sense.

But yes, normal people don't care about sales data.  Normal people don't spend hours of their weeks playing video games either.  Normal people *definitely* do not post on message boards.  We have left the realm of normal long ago, Methodis.

Now that I'm an adult, reviews don't matter again.  I know my own tastes and not only do I not need to check reviews to know if a game is something I want, I find that even if I do check reviews after the fact, they rarely match with my experience.

Maybe if reviews did a better job of conveying personal experiences instead of foolishly trying to be objective buyer's guides that simultaneously have to appease publishers, they might be worth reading more often, but there aren't many like that at all, and really never were.

Gamersgate launched this Void service.  Ad supported free games.  From what I understand, you must watch a ~1 minute ad when booting up a game.  You can have one game out at a time and there's a time window before you can choose a new game.

I agree. That franchise also turns 15 this year and I don't think there's a single iteration that Natsume hasn't localized. Which, as a fan of a series that has had almost nothing localized gets me a bit salty when I see people going "Zomgosh I hope it's Harvest Moon 1223442!!!!xD " when that and Rune Factory are foregone conclusions with this company.

I understand "Medarot" and I think I recognize the characters for Horumarin there (he's behind many of the Medarot manga series, and did the art for most of the games) but I don't understand the rest. Google tells me some guy named "Mook" (wut) also designed Medarot for this game, and that the scenario designer is Ichiro Tezuka. I can't imagine someone named "Mook" actually exists, so help pwease.

The yellow robot is Metabee. The second and third Medabots video games inspired a TV anime that was dubbed in Toronto and aired in North America, and around the world. It's how I was introduced to the franchise as a kid. My avatar is Ikki Tenyrou, the lead character from the anime (and games 2-4).
