Can't understand why this is such a big deal

well, full install option is a huge deal. speed runs are actually possible now!

this is true.

It's kinda baffling how the game makes you take 5 to 20 minute intermissions between acts.  It makes sense given Sony only sold 20 and 60 gig models and MGS4.  Still, wtf.

and the news would've been better if they announced VR missions, even as paid DLC for existing owners.

I really liked the controls in MGS4. if they did VR missions I'd be down for that.

10 years of Atari emails. Fascinating stuff

Franusic has some valid points.  However, what Atari does not need right
now are quitters.  I've seen Atari make many mistakes and I am sure that
I will see many more, but, Atari is a large corporation and it is good
to remember that Large corportations may stumble, but they seldom fall.

There will be plenty of time to decide to quit if Atari really shows signs
of colapsing.  It is true that things are not what they used to be.  Games
are not as popular as before.  The markets are glutted, both Consumer and
Coin-op.  That glutting cannot go on forever, however.  There is a product
lifetime which, once past, even the best products (for their time) cannot
be sold.  When the video game companies (Atari included) can no longer dump
their excess inventories of old games (hopefully this will not take more that

a year,) then new games can begin to go back on the market in a controlled
fassion.  When that time comes, we must be prepared with some VERY GOOD,
VERY ORIGINAL products.

Entertainment is not a fad, but repetition does not make for good entertainment.
The game industry must stop cloning the old games.  We must come up with
original concepts.  It does not necessarily mean creating bold advances in
technology.  It means taking bold advances in our imagination.  If we can
achieve that, then a games sucess is assured.

WELL I DECIDED TO SPLURGE FOR NEW YEARS EVE. I MADE THE RESERVATIONS MONTHS IN
ADVANCE. I CALLED AHEAD 1/2 HOUR BEFORE TO SEE IF THEY WERE BEHIND SCHEDULE.
I WAS TOLD ABOUT 10 MINUTES. SO I SHOWED UP ON TIME. I WAITED 50 MINUTES BEFORE
I LEFT. ALL I RECIEVED WAS VERY INSINCERE APOLOGIES, AND THE STATEMENT (I QUOTE)
" WELL BY THE TIME YOU GET ANY WHERE ELSE IT WILL BE JUST AS LONG A WAIT".

SO WHERE WAS THIS, YOU ASK. A DIVE CALLED "LE MOUTON NOIR"

THIS PLACE HAS GOOD FOOD, BUT I REFUSE TO WAIT FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING
REAMED OUT IN THE POCKET BOOK. GOOD FOOD DOES NOT MAKE UP FOR AN ATMOSPHERE
OF HOSTILE SNOBBERY.

P.S.   THIS IS NOT A SNAP JUDGEMENT, AS ON A PREVIOUS VISIT FOR A SPECIAL
OCCASION I WAITED MORE THAN AN HOUR AFTER BEING SEATED TO RECIEVE
(AN ADMITTEDLY GOOD) DINNER.

   YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Looks like there's some gold in those emails, I just found this one by quick scanning:

Quote
III. COMPETITOR UPDATE

HERE'S A BRIEF UPDATE AS TO NEW GAMES AND RUMORS I HEARD OUT ON THE ROAD,
MOST OF THIS STUFF SHOULD SHOW UP AT AMOA.

     NINTENDO:
NINTENDO HAS TWO NEW GAMES FOR THEIR UNISYSTEM. A SOCCER GAME THAT REALLY
LOOKED LOUSY SHOULD NOT BE A FACTOR IN THE MARKETPLACE AT ALL, REGARDLESS
OF COST.  ANOTHER GAME MACH RIDER LOOKED REALLY PRETTY BAD, BUT MAY DO OK
FOR THEIR SYSTEM..IT IS RATHER POOR QUALITY POLE POSITION ON MOTORCYCLE
WITH SHOOTING AND OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE THROWN IN...STINKO!

THERE IS ALSO RUMOR OF A ARM WRESTLING CONVERSION FOR THE BASE OF PUNCH
OUT GAMES THAT ARE OUT THERE. APPARANTELY, HOWEVER, THE GAME IS NOT
TESTING THAT WELL, AND SINCE IS NOT DEVELOPED BY THEIR HOME DESIGNERS
FOR THE UNISYSTEM, MIGHT BE QUITE EXPENSIVE, I.E. SUPER PUNCH OUT.

THE OTHER THING THEY HAVE DONE IS COME OUT WITH A CONVERSION SET-UP FOR
PAC-MAN THAT ALLOWS THOSE OLD PAC-MAN GAMES TO BE CONVERTED INTO, YOU
GUESSED IT, UNISYSTEMS.  HOWEVER, THEY ARE HAVING SOME PROBLEMS WITH
THIS CONCEPT AND OPERATORS ARE NOT EXACTLY GOING FOR IT AS THEY DID WITH
THE DONKEY KONG UNISYSTEMS...THE PROBLEMS ARE FOURFOLD...THE PAC KIT IS
EXPENSIVE (MORE THAN THE DONKEY VERSION AND ALMOST AS MUCH AS A NEW
UNISYSTEM)...IT IS A VERY DIFFICULT CONVERSION...MANY OPERATORS ARE
RELUCTANT TO CONVERT PAC MAN'S...AND MANY OF THE PAC MAN'S HAVE BURNED
IN MAZES IN THE MONITORS AND THE CONVERSION'S LOOK REALLY POOR BEHIND THE
     PHOSPHUR BURNS.

     BALLY/SENTE:
NOTHING REALLY TO REPORT HERE, EXCEPT FOR A FOUR PLAYER HAT TRICK THAT IS
PRESENTED IN A NEW FOUR PLAYER TABLE TOP CONFIGURATION, NOT FOR THE
EXISTING SENTE CABINET THAT ALREADY HAS BEEN CHANGED BEFORE.  THIS SEEMS
TO HAVE REALLY TICKED OFF OPERATORS AND DISTRIBUTORS WHO WERE HOPING THIS
PIECE TO BE A CONVERSION FOR THEIR EXISTING SENTE SYSTEMS.

BALLY HAS SHOWN NOTHING NEW EXCEPT FOR YET ANOTHER ARTICLE BY BOB MULLANE,
THEIR CEO, IN BOTH CHICAGO PAPERS STATING THAT HE DID NOT OPTIMISTICALLY
FEEL THAT BALLY WOULD BE A FORCE IN THE COIN-OP MARKETPLACE VERY MUCH
LONGER...IN FACT HE SAID SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT THAT BRINGING BACK
BALLY'S ENGINEERING FORCE TO ANYTHING LIKE IT ONCE WAS WOULD BE..."ALMOST
     IMPOSSIBLE."

     DATA EAST:
THESE GUYS SEEM LIKE THEY WILL COOL-OFF SOON BECAUSE THEY DON'T SEEM TO
HAVE ANYTHING TO GOOD UP THEIR SLEAVES...(MAYBE THAT'S WHY TOM PETTIT AND
JOLLY BACKER JUST LEFT?)...BUT YOU NEVER CAN BE SURE WITH DATA EAST...THEY
ALWAYS SEEM TO PULL RABBITS OUT OF THEIR HATS.

THEY HAVE TESTED A SHOOTING GAME CALLED "SHOOT-OUT" THAT IS SUPPOSEDLY NOT
DOING THAT GREAT AND IS ALLREADY APPARENTLY SELLING AT ROCK BOTTOM CLOSE-
OUT PRICES.  ALSO, WE KNOW THEY HAVE "TANK" WHICH WE HAD IN-HOUSE AND WERE
     NOT TO CRAZY ABOUT, RIGHT?

     WILLIAMS:
THEY HAVE DONE IT AGAIN WITH ANOTHER SUPERB PIN-BALL GAME CALLED "COMET".
THIS ONE IS REALLY, REALLY FUN TO PLAY AND OFFERS TONS OF ACTION UTILIZING
AN AMUSEMENT PARK THEME.  IT OFFERS GREAT SOUND EFFECTS AND THE FIRST EVER
1 MILLION POINT SHOT...WILL MAKE PEOPLE FORGET ABOUT SPACE SHUTTLE...ROGER
SHARPE WILL LOVE IT (BUT IT DOES END ROGER!) AND HE'LL UNDOUBTEDLY CALL IT
GAME OF THE SHOW AT THE UPCOMING AMOA.

INCIDENTALLY, THE GAME IS ON TEST AT OUTER LIMITS MT. VIEW IF YOU WANT TO
     PLAY WITH IT.

     CINEMATRONICS:
SURPRISINGLY, THESE GUYS ARE STILL AROUND...BUT PROBABLY JUST BARELY.
THEY HAVE A SYSTEM OUT AND ARE SHOWING A PRETTY DECENT 2-PLAYER SOCCER
GAME CALLED "POWER PLAY".  IT IS PLAYED LIKE SOCCER BUT YOU CAN PUNCH
OUT YOUR OPPONENT AND HIS GOALIE WITH A PUNCH BUTTON.  HEARING THAT IT
IS NOT DOING THAT GREAT ON TEST.

I HAVE ALSO HEARD ABOUT A BASEBALL GAME APPARENTLY CALLED "WORLD SERIES:
THE SEASON".  DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT IT BUT THEIR SYSTEM DOES HAVE
VERY GOOD GRAPHICS AND SOUND CAPABILITIES, JUDGING FROM THE SOCCER PIECE.

     KONAMI:
THEY HAVE BEEN SHOWING A NEW CONVERSION FOR ANY RASTER GAME CALLED
"RUSH N' ATTACK"...IT IS A RAMBO GAME ALL THE WAY AND IS REALLY PRETTY
GOOD.  YOU ARE TRYING TO RESCUE A BUNCH OF TIED UP GREEN BERETS AND ARE
SNEAKING AROUND IN A RUSSIAN ARMY COMPLEX...IT'S COOL, YOU CAN KUNG-FU
RUSSIANS, SHOOT RUSSIANS, GRENADE RUSSIANS AND EVEN FLAME THROW THE PANTS
OFF OF THEM LITTLE COMMIE BASTARDS...REAGAN WILL LOVE IT...IT'S BEING
CALLED "GREEN BERETS" IN EUROPE BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL SCARED OF THE RUSKIES
     OVER THERE.

     SEGA:
APPARENTLY NOTHING NEW BESIDES HANG-ON, WHICH IS DOING PRETTY WELL BUT IS
RATHER EXPENSIVE.  THESE GUYS ARE ALSO HEAVILY IN TO DOING THE AFORE
MENTIONED "REDEMPTION EQUIPMENT"...AND OFFER SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES OF
     CRANE GAMES CURRENTLY.

     ATARI:
I MUST MENTION THE UNBELEIVABLE REACTION WE HAVE BEEN GETTING FOR
"GAUNTLET".  WORD IS DEFINATELY OUT THAT THE PIECE IS HOT AND THE WHOLE
INDUSTRY SEEMS TO BE VERY EXCITED BY IT'S EXPECTED RELEASE.  EVEN
OUR MANUFACTURING COMPETITORS ARE SAYING THEY REALLY THINK THE PIECE IS
     A GOOD ONE.

"TEMPLE" TOO IS REALLY DOING WELL AND SEEMS TO HAVE TAKEN THE MARKET AWAY
FOR USED "MARBLE MADNESSES" ALMOST OVER NIGHT, AS OPERATORS SCRAMBLE TO
GET CHEAP BASE UNITS TO CONVERT.  WITH THE USED CABINET MARKET GONE, AND
THE GAME DOING GREAT, WE SHOULD HAVE A REAL GOOD SHOT AT INCREASING THE
     BASE UNITS OF SYSTEM 1.

THE BOY STILL HANGS! CHECK THE LATEST PLAY-METER POLL...
^_^

Some major changes are being made with-in our facilities which in one
way or another will affect all employees.  These changes have been
approved and will be put into effect at this time.

SECURITY

To beef up our warehouse security,  the two gates separating the manuf-
acturing warehouse from the engineering portion will be kept locked at
all times.  The locks have been rekeyed, employees requiring access
through these gates must check out the key from the main lobby.

GAMES

A program has been undertaken to restore our archive games to working
condition whereby they will be retained as archives and at the same
time be available for use by the employees.

The front lobby of 675 will be utilized for this purpose.

All archive games
will be marked with an "ARCHIVE GAME" sticker, and
any game so marked will not be permitted to leave the building.

PLANTS

A decision has been made as to the disposition of our interior plants.

Our plants for the most part are deteriorating adding little
enhancement to our buildings.  During the pass two years, several
methods have been tried in hopes of up-grading, but have failed.

In September we aquired the services of an interior landscape con-
sultant to evaluate our plant problems.  The results of his survey
allowed us two choices:  One being to overhaul (transplant, feed,
and maintain) our existing plants.  This sounded pretty good until
we were told that only about twenty-five plants out of all the
plants in the building were worth the efford.

Our second choice, which we decided had more merit, was to remove
all the plants from the buildings and replace them with new ones.

Going along with our second choice created still another problem.
To replace plant for plant would not be an equitable solution as
many of our employees do not have plants in their offices or work
stations.

Giving careful consideration to all aspects, we feel we have arrived
at a conclusion befitting all our employees.  The following guide
lines will be put into effect for both the manufacturing and
engineering buildings.

1.  New plants will be placed in all common areas, lobbies,
cafeteria, lunnch rooms, and executive offices.

2.  Employees are permitted to have personal plants in their
offices and/or immediate work area.  The maintenance of
these plants will be the responsibility of the employee.

3.  All "Atari" plants (with containers) are to be removed
from our buildings, no exceptions please.  Employees
wishing to take their "Atari" plant home are encouraged
to do so with the stipulation that their plant not find
its' way back into our buildings.  (Just think, this
would make a nice Valentine's gift for that someone
    special).

Our new plants are expected to start arriving shortly after
Valentine's Day.  We ask that all the plants be removed by Friday,
February 13th. (How about that for timing ?)  Any "Atari" plants
remaining in the buildings after this date will be disposed of.
So I won't be accused of a Saint Valentine's Day massacre, the
clean-up will begin the following Monday.

Three final items:

Please be careful when removing plants from the building, plastic
bags if needed can be obtained from the main lobby.

The plants located in our main lobby and cafeteria are to remain
until replaced with new ones.

Finally, if you have a persoal plant that fits the description of
an "Atari" plant, please contact me for conformation.

Thanks again for your support.  Bob

MY PLANT IS.
MY PLANT AND I HAVE SHARED AN OFFICE TOGETHER FOR EIGHT LOVING YEARS.
SURE, THERE WERE GOOD TIMES AND BAD TIMES, BUT WE STUCK IT OUT. SHE ALMOST
DIDN'T SURVIVE HAVING "PROFESSIONAL" CARE, BUT SHE'S BACK TO GOOD HEALTH
NOW.
SO, SHE'S BEEN FIRED, TERMINATED, ASKED TO GO. WHERE WILL SHE GO? SHE
WILL GO HOME WITH ME, DEFEATED AND BROKEN. I KNOW SHE WILL DIE THERE.  SHE
IS USED TO FLUORESCENT LIGHT, NOISE AND STRESS. THE QUIET DARKNESS WILL END
HER LIFE.

TRULY A SAD STORY

EDF 4 teaser site up
http://www.d3p.co.jp/edf4/
Has this been shown here? I'm pretty sure a new J-made EDF was announced to be happening the same time Insect Armageddon was first unveiled. Cool that it's coming fairly soon anyway, maybe they'll ship an entire game unlike the IA people.

I worked at Atari Games West/Midway for a year. Not the worst place I've worked, but definitely the strangest. Everything was silo'd. It was as though several separate companies were in the same building, zero communication across the teams. I've heard from people who where there when coin-op was still profitable that it was largely due to the competitive royalty structure being put in place -- no one wanted to share anything.

I'm interested in Sleeping Dogs, but I really want to wait into some reviews and impressions come down first.
I'm day one on this. I don't think it will redefine the open-world-game genre, but there's enough there for $60.

Um..... I think you are missing a small (yeah right) point about the Nintento
Games... THERE FUN!!!! Gee, now isn't that a novel concept, a bunch of video
games that are fun to play. In my house we have Sega Master System, Genesis
and NES. Take a guess which gets played the most? Come on guess. Give up?
The NES. Why becaue it has such FUN games as Zelda, Link, Metroid, SMB2, Metal
Gear, Fester's Quest, Double Dragon, et. al. The only thing my brothers (who
are 9 and 13) use the Genesis for (Sega Master system now sits in a closet.)
is Sports games. That's because good sports games look better on a system with
awesome graphics. My brothers still play sports games on NES too. The NES has
something that the ATARI 2600 used to beat the superior Intellivision:
playabilty. I can still give you a list of ATARI 2600 games that I would not
mind playing today, most of them were made by Activision, but there are still
some atari classics. To make a long story short (Too late :-) great hardware
does not a great system make. This is both true for PC's and Video Gaming
systems. I still prefer PC's over Macs, and NES over Genesis. As a closeing
note

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WILL BUY!!; NOT WHAT YOU THINK THEY WILL LIKE!!!!!!!

this one wasn't posted in that thread, but it's on N64 graphics:  https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/rec.games.video.nintendo/e9pVur5kBZ0

Best part is how people use Creator as an example of what the N64 could achieve, exactly how people use Zelda tech demo for Wii U in 2012.

People hating on Nintendo and thinking it'll fail, too, pumping Sega systems and shit.

I want to hate you for hating on N1 who I used to love and hold dearly to me.

But I kind of agree.  I finished the first Cladun and had no interest in playing the 2nd or this.  Whereas I've played through all their other games.  That makes me sad ;_;

A Sega release schedule appears to have outed an HD remake of the first two Yakuza games. Yakuza 1&2 HD Edition appeared briefly on the schedule, listed for PlayStation 3 release on December 1 at ¥5,229.

While the game is no longer visible on the schedule page, you can see a cached version here

If they do a Western release with Kenzan added on, I'll bite.

How's everyone's haul with regards to the Steam summer sale?

Why not?

You're seriously asking why SEGA aren't just going to throw in a massive, full localization of a current gen game that they couldn't work out a financially viable localization of even at full price?  Just gonna toss that into that cheapie collection?  Use your brain, man.
Jeez, man, calm down, just a thought.

Bought a pair of Astro A40's to sort of replace a pair of high end turtle beaches I had. The headset part was breaking on the Turtle Beach's unfortunately. I had heard really great things about the Astro's compared to the Turtle Beach's...

I think the Turtle Beach's are better. The Astro's sound muffled and bass heavy by comparison and the mic monitoring (the ability to hear yourself in your headset as you speak) is almost non-existent in them. Disappointed.

Tracked down a copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 locally, pain in the ass- and priced pretty high even used. Still one of the best of the Marvel RPG/BEUs- I was dumb to get rid of it the first time.

I'm perfectly calm.  You just said something stupid and Gundam and I informed you of reality in the nicest ways we respectively know how.

Yep.

If you want to play Kenzan, you can get the Japanese version cheap now, and there is a really good translation walkthrough on GameFAQs. I know it's not perfect, but it works.

Started up Mass Effect 2 after finishing 1 earlier. Man, the gameplay difference are almost detrimentally jarring after just finishing ME1. Maybe if I allowed myself sometime before jumping into ME2 but my mind is rebelling against it. Feels way more tactically oriented though which is cool. Already feeling the sense of being confined to various scenarios though. The setup to the beginning of the game is crazy as fuck though, one of the best I've ever seen.

Also wanna say I hate how close the camera is to Shepard in this game. Always feels like you're trying to look around him. The camera should be able to be moved back just a bit to allow breathing room for the gamer.

After about 4 hours and pumping some money in, Microsoft Flight is pretty cool. It isn't a hardcore sim but it also isn't super arcadey. IMO is tows the line between pretty well so you have to keep a lot of the meters and stuff in mind, but you don't have to worry about dying if you make a few mistakes.

Went and beat the extended ending for ME3, this time I went for "red" instead of "green". A bit better, still pretty stupid, still people should just :patel and move on.

I was ignoring all the Expendables 2 game coverage because I just assumed it would be another FPS or cover based shooter with a licensed attached to it. Color me surprised. Looks like a mix of Commandos and Renegade Ops. Looks fun.

I was pretty surprised, too. And when they first showed the graphics I thought they looked really terrible. Then I saw that it was actually a team-based tactical action game, not what I was expecting at all. Could still be terrible, though, but now I'm actually kinda interested.

Has anybody used www.jjpgames.com for ordering a game before? I've ordered a copy of the first Professor Layton from them, and in waiting for it I'm a little worried that they just sell bootleg bullshit. I'll find out soon anyways, but the anticipation is killing me.
