and somehow, on disc DLC is considered the fighting game crime of the century.  Arc charges $8 a character, then outdates the version you bought the character for, adding that character into the next version.

If there's any one company that needs to stop re-re-re-re-re-re-releasing games and just release upgrades digitally, it's Arc.  Follow Capcom's lead and release this stuff for $15 or something.  At least this time the game is hitting new platforms.

I somehow sunk over 100 hours into it for the first time last month which is rare for me with games these days.   Even though the dungeon designs are meh and the battle system is pretty easy (even on hard) once you understand the mechanics, it's got a charming weirdness to it all that really sucked me in.

That sucks. I've had less and less reason to pay attention to Giantbomb since Ryan died and they got new people who i don't care for, Vinny is'nt on the podcast normally, and now this.

Will probably just stop going there altogether now.

Without Patrick the amount of non subscriber content is going skyrocket downwards. How long can Giantbomb live off extremely dedicated fans that pay to see content?

I doubt this for now at least since they are actually hiring for someone in New York (the job listing kinda gave away Patrick's departure before it happened) and Alex is there. We'll see though

The problem with Patrick was that he was pretty much alone out there (especially once Vinny ended up in NY and basically took Alex) and he's mostly a news/article guy (even though he did well with the video stuff).

As said before good luck to him in his new endevour (which seems to be similar since he mentions GDC and E3 as stuff he will still check out)

I always wonder what would these guys do if they quit. I mean with developers, aside from a shit job market there are opportunities everywhere, but for a "journalist" where do you go aside from like four major publications?*

Everywhere else the pay is complete shit and there are thousands of dudes waiting in the wings who can put two words together for free. It's little wonder that game journalism has shifted to be notoriety focused. It's the only thing that can keep them employed these days.

"Consulting", i.e. internal reviews for publishers. Though that's only for top peeps, former EICs and such. PR. Freelance ( ). And yes, community managers. Only journos I know that went into game dev and did actual game dev things are Chris Remo, Nick Breckon, Shawn Elliott and maybe some of the old 1UP peeps.

Yeah I'm aware of consulting. It's actually a popular side-job for journalists while they still write for sites which is a shady can of worms I don't want to get into.

I've seen a lot of writers get into translation and while it's a rough going at first it can be a pretty rewarding job I've been told. Plus if you make a lot of connections you can finagle your way into other industries so there's plenty of work if you're good at networking.

It depends; whether you're a seasoned pro or a junior desperate to break into the game industry. If you're a pro it would be horrible. There's no artistry or imagination behind creating those doors. The art style is determined by the Environment Artists, the shape and size is determined by Gameplay constraints, and even the textures would use real-world assets as a base. You'd have to be basically bottom of the barrel to be stuck with that job. If someone has zero experience and this is their first game industry job then fuck yeah it's awesome. First credit to your resume is a AAA world-renowned game with easy access to the rest of a major corporation like Capcom. You'd be all but guaranteed a promotion after the game.

But more seriously in today's market those doors would be outsourced while internal talent works on more critical art like characters or hero props. lol
