I liked the Crash games because they stayed within their means and therefore are still fun to play today IMO.
Compare that against the awful slew of 3D platformers and collectathons of the era and I take Crash over the Banjos, Spyros, Crocs and DK64 of that era.

Croc 1 was actually meant to be a Yoshi game.

But Nintendo dropped it and used the idea of a 3D platformer to create Mario 64 instead

Thanks again Bepbo for letting me grab Elite Dangerous for Steam. I had some issues logging in to their weird login thing, because I already had a PS4 account. Sadly I could not use the ships I had on the PS4 version but had to begin again.

Been awhile since I played it since I sold my PS4 awhile back, but the controls came back to me pretty fast. Man I love this game, just flying around the galaxy trading and doing missions.

I'm no fan of collectathons (rule of thumb, there are good exceptions, like JSRF) but Crash was so stiff and awkward to play.

I played the original Crash at the LI Retro Expo a few years ago after not really having played the series since the halcyon days of the PS1 (I've played the first 3 games to varying degrees but never owned  or completed any). Was surprised how much fun I was having, even though there's issues with poor hit detection here and there. I quickly purchased the first 3 games (this was before the N Sane Trilogy was announced) and am gonna play through at least one of them later this year when I get to the PS1 on my 'chronological backlog'.

Never got into the Spyro series though, but their gfx were certainly impressive for the time.

Everyone kept saying how bad Crash 1 was for decades but then the remake was great. :idont It's like a hardcore NES platformer with some rough edges, or alternatively like the (equally not greatly balanced) first Donkey Kong Country translated literally into 3D. The remake in particular was great, because you had this NES-esque platforming with crazy modern visuals for a change. 3 I played back in the day and is actually the worst, because half the game is gimmicks.

Racing is legit one of the greats though, regardless of what you can say about the platformers.

Spyro is Banjo-Kazooie with all the best parts taken out. Got nostalgia for the first, but it's completely average.

Average games aged poorly. Great ones less so. Like, I wouldn't recommend RE2 to a casual, but to enthusiasts no doubt. Caught up with all Mikami games before Evil Within came out and Dino Crisis was a hundred times more tense than that mess.  :doge  Best gen 7 machine was 32 bit aka DS. Randomly picked up PS1 Crash Racing a few years back and was shocked it shits all over modern Mario Kart, which I played hundred of hours. Indies keep copying 16 bit games, but still can't match the old level design made by pros in their prime.
 etc. etc.

I'll be honest, I'd probably take an "average" game from back in the day over an "average" game today - just because they're usually a lot more streamlined and don't really have all the superfluous junk, endless tutorials, that pads out modern day games. And back in the day when game design was a bit less standardized, you'd have a bit more variety and creativity in terms of mechanics that simply just missed the mark in execution.

You're telling me you're playing that bridge level and thinking "yeah, yeah this is good"? To me, the remake highlighted just how shit that game was.
When they forced me to replay it in Uncharted 4 i thought they had fucked it up somehow, but no, that was actually how bad it controlled.

This is offset by indie games.
You can really find streamlined and very creative games in there, if you're willing to wade through all the pixel art clones, and don't care about AAA production values.

The first bridge is fun. The second is the hardest level, but hardly like the rest of the game anyway. The controls are fine, but the game is all designed around finetuning digital inputs, not analogue.

I think Crash 1 is a pretty good simple platformer. Don't remember the sequels enough to comment. Enjoyed them back in the day and played a chunk of Crash 1 in the remake and still thought it was great. It's no frills platforming with a bit of trial and error (especially when you are running towards the screen from something and can't see ahead).

Reminds me a lot of DKC and stuff. It's not best platformer ever and I certainly wouldn't put it in the same top-tier as Mario. But it's a good game and there's room enough in gaming for platformers that are "good, but not better than Mario".

Probably don't care about a Crash 4 though. Didn't care enough about the remake to play more than a few hours of Crash 1. It's a bit too simple & repetitive for my tastes these days and I don't care for the aesthetic.

I thought consensus on crash was that 2 was a refinement on 1 and 3 was going overboard with the gimmicks. I played the n-sane remakes and think I ended up feeling like that was generally correct (tho my main takeaway was "this loading sucks ass")

I remember liking the hamsterball levels* in wrath of cortex, probably the most fun gimmick levels in a crash game outside of riding the bear/tiger. would be cool to see those make a comeback, I guess

*traveller's tales, who developed wrath of cortex, followed it with Haven call to the king, which is truly an awful mess of gameplay gimmicks where the hamsterball is also the highlight, although shittier since it has a meter that drains and you have to pick up resources all the time to not insta-lose

PS: jumping flash 2 never gets enough props.  :'( it is a nice, better set of levels and the draw-distance is much improved (even if the camera is still bad)

Hmmm, maybe I should try out Crash 2 on the remake. I haven't played it since 199x and don't remember a thing about it.

And yeah, Jumping Flash rocks. I'm surprised no indie dev has made a Jumping Flash VR game. It's a pretty simple concept.

I already have a problem with that level of digital input in 3d games, but even then, something like Super Mario World still feels more fluid and responsive.
I'm not here trying to say Ace Combat is objectively superior to Afterburner, but that clash of worlds Crash finds itself in, to me is just bad.
Clearly is a subjective issue tho, plenty of people love it.

How does this look so much better than PS4? It's just a 1060 3GB w/ i3.  The frame rate too... It was easily over 30fps.. craziness..

Finally out June 22. It's been interesting to me how the game has taken things I didn't care for from the 90s era—limited palette dithering and posterization, pre-renderings (the aesthetic anyway), unusual interactivity—but added enough stylistic cohesion along with aspects of interest—cool music, more gameplay variety, stop-motion influence, low key vibes—that it has a certain sincerity about it I find attractive.

Not sure why they changed the UI typeface from the previous trailers though, worked better imo.

Xenoblade Chronicles is so exhaustingly long. I feel like I go 10 hours between story beats in this game. I am determined to finish it, but I am definitely still confused at how universally praised this game is.

As someone who really liked Xenoblade back then and has kind of gone "hmm, maybe this was better in my memories" when playing the Switch version, I kind of think it has to do with the time and place.

Console jrpgs were not having the best time during the PS3/Wii era.

So I haven't finished the Switch version at all so after the beginning I may be like "no this game is actually awesome like I remember".  But back then it felt like kind of the next step in jrpgs. Like the mmo combat I kind of find meh now back then felt like the next step after FFXII. FFXII's "problem" was playing it self and a critique was that it was an offline MMO. So in XB you have MMO ideas like aggro and tanking and it addresses the play itself stuff by having things that keep you really involved while things auto attack. When I played it that felt very smart to me.

Also while the world in the end is not that interactive. The scale and size was still impressive. For me, I want jrpgs to have worlds that feel like they exist. To be well rendered, have some belief in thier existence and feel like I'm traversing a world when I play them. XB does do that, but it also has an interesting aspect that you are on giants. I remember one time while playing I eventually realized this land mass that I was scaling was actually a giant finger and from the top of the finger I could make out the whole palm. It was amazing.

But also the story felt very old school jrpg. Simple town boy has his town destroyed and is flung into a greater adventure. It's cliche, but I remember it being engaging and not offensive. Yet, in an era that felt like it was all NIS or waifu bait animu stuff, this was the kind of anime/Japanese nerd shit I was looking for.

Is it as interesting as Xenogears(a game I played when I was like 13 after experiencing Evangelion so that's probably why I like it), but I remember thinking it was really good.

Getting over the hump of Jrpgs can be annoying so if I can do it I think I'll probably enjoy it like I did before.

It's a jrpg but exploration focus so the story is in drips. There is a good amount of story and it comes together really well by the end, but there are large gameplay/exploration gaps. Especially in the first half. I feel like the 2nd half starts throwing in more story.

theyre are so much things to do to improve the game, rather that "new playable characters" or "new ennemies".  like if you don't want wall jumps in mario bros wii or you want the mario 3 leaf in mario world style. or if you want people don't allow to grab stuff to break your level. or you want more than 3 pathethics backgrounds per game style. etc etc. or if you want put items like pipes in diagonal you can't. or having a "square" progression map. cause horizontal is too short in height sometimes, and vertical too short in width. it's like smm creators listen the community but never played their own game. did you ever try to build something in a corner of your level ? yeah, pain in the a.... despite nintendo "seal of quality". and what about community ? tools to search for a level, or promote it. not exists. in no one world.

Wonder if people made enough stink about the way it ends and make a petition, ND will patch the ending... Worked for Mass Effect...  :doge

Personally, until a 3rd one is confirmed, I think I'll do what I did with Shenmue 3... Not play it and leave the ending of the prior installment in my memory the way it is.  :hmph

.....which I guess at this point is inevitable (a follow up), seeing as it's the fastest selling PS4 game of all time.  Wonder what the attempted returns/refunds are. lol

From 22 July, Mixer's website and app will redirect users to Facebook Gaming.

As part of the deal, Microsoft will work to bring its xCloud games-streaming service to Facebook.

"This seems quite ruthless, but Microsoft's strategy to reach more gamers is underpinned by its cloud business, not Mixer," said Piers Harding-Rolls from the consultancy Ampere Analysis.

"Clearly Facebook has significant reach globally, to expose users to xCloud."

What do you mean  ???

Seems like a straight forward honest response about where the new mobile spinoff came from? It's just ignorable mobile filler, doesn't really matter, and makes them lots of money to fund their main games, so let them make this stuff.

We know Xehanort (aka Anakin Skywalker) went off on a journey and saw a lot of bad shit and came back thinking "man, fuck humanity, let's kill everyone and start over". We don't need to know what happened on his journey, but if you're interested now you can youtube the cutscenes while someone else plays the mobile garbage for you in a year.

Also yeah, I know the next KH saga comes out of the mobile stuff so mobile did actually matter, but this geniunely seems like a side story filler thing that doesn't matter except for some teasers they'll throw in.

Also yeah, I know the next KH saga comes out of the mobile stuff so mobile did actually matter, but this geniunely seems like a side story filler thing that doesn't matter except for some teasers they'll throw in.

less that and more the way it feels like some rant. "we knoooowww you guys are sick of this story and the way we've been handling it and everyone makes fun of us and we said it was over buuuuuuuuuuut fuck it let's do this anyway." also the bit where they ask for a flash animator is lmao. bro it's flash animation and those shitty cutscenes are why 99% of the reason players shell out millions for this stupid game. i'm sure you can find someone who'll do the job, even if you're likely not paying them enough.

The flash animator bit was pretty funny. You'd think a big company like SE would be able to find some flash animation skilled animators...

But you're right that they're probably paying them crap, which is why.

With Mixer dead, does it mean Ninja is free to go back to Twitch with part or total of the exclusivity payment he received from MS ?
