I'm generally a big fan of double fine, and really thought I would like brutal legend. But like so many others, the rts part of the game just killed it for me

I like their big budget (for their company size) games like Psychonauts or Brutal Legend. I haven't played their kickstarted adventure game Broken Age because you can't advance dialogue and that bugs me in those kind of games, but it's probably good.

When they had to lower their budget and focus on $15 XBLA projects I felt like their game quality went downhill. Costume Quest was alright, but after that it was all kinda iffy stuff even if I sorta enjoyed the weird diablo game. Even when I enjoyed these ones it felt like enjoying a 6-7/10 kinda game enjoyment.

Psychonauts VR was a bit better than that and a pretty decent VR game. Since Psychonauts 2 actually has a budget again and that gameplay video looks good I'm optimistic about it.

Is Psychonauts just good for the jokes/writing or is it a proper fun platformer? I never played it but it's on Gamepass and wanted to play 2 when it came out. :thinking

It's an average platformer with good writing/art.

Psychonauts is good, not great. It suffers from the same issue as many other Double Fine games. They are clever, but not particularly fun to play. There is always something lacking with the gameplay.

Have never been able to get into their games or Grim Fandango.  The Secret Of Monkey Island 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games of all time, which Tim Schafer worked on, though.

Saw a thread on Era about mindfuck VN recommendations, reminded me of a couple I never got to like Ever 17 and Umineko.

Looked up howlongtobeat.com for those like I do every game I'm thinking of playing and I saw Umineko is one hundred and twenty hours long visual novel

 :derp

I read Higurashi no Naku Koro back in the day and it was pretty decent length but nothing like that. That just seems...insane.

That seems more reasonable and in-line with how long it would take my slow ass to go through Yakuza 0 + Kiwami + Kiwami 2 + Like a Dragon from the howlongtobeat.com estimates.

I mean so was Higurashi, but I thought they were like 4-6 hours each so maybe 40 hours total. 120 is just a looooot of reading. Pretty sure you can read the five Game of Thrones books in less time than that.

The original Y1 was like 20 hours. Sounds like Kiwami padded it.

Also, obviously the difference being each of those is a complete story whereas if Umineko is like Higurashi, it's one single story with chapters or points of views.

Falcom took forever to finally get a trailer out for the new Trails. Still no cutscene/story stuff, just battle shots. Some spoilers on returning characters in there. Graphics look mixed. The desert looks awful, but the Japan looking town looks nice. Slight upgrade from Cold Steel 3/4/Hajimari, but nothing huge.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I equally dislike the entire Cold Steel cast, so Fie returning is meh, but anyone else from Class VII returning wouldn't be particularly better so w/e.

Zin looks good. Walter looks weird and it kinda irks me they have to keep bringing back the Sky antagonists. Let it go already.

Braided hair sword girl is from the VN at the end of Hajimari. She's great and should've been the lead, but at least she'll be playable and part of the cast.

Looks awesome, it's interesting hearing drum & bass in a Trails game. And also Calvard is definitely looking like a captivating setting - the cities and biomes look a lot more diverse than the other games - a mixture of gritty early 1900s London, Middle Eastern and East Asian settings.

I just checked out the trailer for this Aloy Horizon thing people were talking about. I can't believe people are arguing about her face when her hair is constantly bouncing around like it's trying to escape her head at the slightest movement. It also phases through her bow. Surely that's far more important than the fact she's doesn't look like Rose Leslie or whatever.

I've been wondering if games need some sort of 'original cut' setting.
All these remasters are based on the latest patches of certain games which translates to signifcant changes to the release experience.

Take Ninja Gaiden 2, my favorite part of the game as the enemy gauntlet at the end which would absolutely murder the Xbox 360 to about 5fps as you had to defeat dozens of enemies.
Apparently this is no longer the case in the 'Sigma' version of the game, which is part of the remaster.

Tiberian Sun at launch had insane artillery tanks. They could not just destroy buildings but also deform the terrain. Powerful stuff.
It was 'patched' to balance things out and of course the remaster does not have the original powerful arty.

CONTROL is another example. Incredible particle effects would literally fill up the screen in the v1 version of the game.
In patches they signficantly reduced those effects to fix performance issues.

Cyberpunk 2077 had these intense flashes as you went into Braindance mode. Removed because of some complaints about epilespy.

Countless other games were changed with patches and if the patch is always an improvement is debatable.
However, digital storefronts usually force you to pick the 'latest' version of the game. As do remasters.

Xbox's BC got you covered on that one. The 360 copy gets upscaled to 4K and runs that part at 60fps. (And that was on the One X) If there were any small framedrops, the Series X'll have ironed them out.

Hmm, I think my original disk game me one of those "This game is not backwards compatible" messages but I'll try again.
I was quite surprised how many games aren't BC enabled. Stuff like PGR4, SEGA Rally, Binary Domain etc. .

I just check this once in a while. I think the FPS boost team might the ones that did back compat, so I don't think we'll see a lot more older titles added. Which is a shame as I'd like to see the Project Zero (Fatal Frame) and Silent Hill games get BC support. The classic xbox titles get automatic upscaling. It would turn Silent Hill 2 and 3 into the remaster it should've been.

I was thinking about it yesterday, and there's literally no game i'm excited to see at this E3.
Maybe Elden Ring, maybe FFXVI, but i'm not really jumping up and down even for those.

I heard there was a rumor for Dragon's Dogma 2, so that would probably change things.

A lot of moving parts behind the scenes. Mostly developers wondering if they should move to UE5 (and delay) or ship on UE4 and things like that.

Also lots of complaining journo's on Twitter already.

Skyward Sword's  sand sea also did something similar. Digital Foundry said that the thing that makes it impressive is the new SSD. Since it's actually loading it in at that instance, whereas those older games got both instances of the game already loaded in the memory.

Yeah i think it's more a matter of: Can the average user even tell? I think  something like the giant crowds of Kameo (or Dead Rising) from back in the day, were more of a on-the-nose example of technical jump, for someone who doesn't really care to understand the inner workings of stuff.

That said, it's still better than what we get with cross gen games, as much as i love 60fps (and this game still has a 60fps mode).

Nah, I like my roller coaster good graphics campaigns.

Iffy on the specialist idea. I like rigged classes in games.

Robot dog gave me Frontlines flashbacks where the drones were overpowered, annoying, and lead to their masters just hiding in a corner.

Weather effects could be cool, but shitty visibility was a problem in V. Didn't hear anything about a good spot system, so cautious.

Would rather have vehicles spawn on the map, but if what the PS Blog said was true, hopefully, they are actual drops. Not whatever Battlefront 2 does.

Excited to see gameplay.
