That's the thing about auction- you can totally end up with good players WAY later in the draft.  He's not gonna win a Cy Young or anything, but for example AJ Burnett was just kind of forgotten about until almost the end of the draft when everybody was all broke and shit.  Aaron Harang too.

Also, if you play it too cheap you'll end up with a team that sucks:

1.     (1)     Phil Hughes     $7
2.    (14)    J.A. Happ    $7
3.    (38)    Garrett Jones    $6
4.    (62)    Nick Markakis    $21
5.    (70)    Denard Span    $14
6.    (77)    Derrek Lee    $20
7.    (86)    Franklin Gutiérrez    $6
8.    (88)    Brandon Phillips    $18
9.    (97)    Jonathan Broxton    $15
10.    (98)    Josh Hamilton    $11
11.    (103)    Gordon Beckham    $11
12.    (107)    Nelson Cruz    $14
13.    (110)    Asdrubal Cabrera    $13
14.    (123)    Chris Coghlan    $9
15.    (124)    Matt Wieters    $7
16.    (133)    Gavin Floyd    $10
17.    (146)    Rafael Soriano    $9
18.    (147)    Carlos Peña    $13
19.    (158)    Jake Peavy    $19
20.    (159)    Carlos González    $6
21.    (170)    Francisco Cordero    $24

as opposed to a team that's top heavy

1.     (2)     Chase Utley     $40
2.    (5)    Álex Rodríguez    $45
3.    (7)    Tim Lincecum    $47
4.    (13)    Jorge Posada    $5
5.    (30)    Joakim Soria    $14
6.    (34)    Justin Morneau    $22
7.    (42)    Andre Ethier    $18
8.    (54)    Jason Bartlett    $12
9.    (66)    John Lackey    $15
10.    (78)    Ryan Ludwick    $12
11.    (105)    Edwin Jackson    $10
12.    (117)    Jay Bruce    $9
13.    (174)    Ken Griffey Jr.    $1
14.    (178)    Miguel Tejada    $2
15.    (186)    Kevin Correia    $2
16.    (196)    Hiroki Kuroda    $1
17.    (217)    Alfredo Aceves    $1
18.    (224)    Vladimir Guerrero    $1
19.    (231)    Ryan Doumit    $1
20.    (236)    Vernon Wells    $1
21.    (241)    Alex Gordon    $1

I'd rather have the second team than the first.

I kind of like my team, even though my first two picks were cases of me bidding up picks I didn't want and getting stuck with them.

1.     (24)     Johan Santana     $22
2.    (36)    Mariano Rivera    $20
3.    (50)    Robinson Canó    $20
4.    (58)    Tommy Hanson    $20
5.    (65)    Kendry Morales    $25
6.    (90)    Jason Heyward    $10
7.    (104)    José López    $7
8.    (122)    Andrew Bailey    $13
9.    (127)    Adam Dunn    $19
10.    (132)    Yunel Escobar    $12
11.    (134)    Brian Wilson    $12
12.    (141)    Jered Weaver    $9
13.    (142)    Nate McLouth    $7
14.    (144)    Jason Kubel    $9
15.    (145)    Francisco Rodríguez    $7
16.    (152)    Miguel Montero    $8
17.    (153)    Elvis Andrus    $10
18.    (169)    Rick Porcello    $3
19.    (188)    Chipper Jones    $8
20.    (202)    Bronson Arroyo    $1
21.    (203)    Tim Hudson    $18

Actually, now that I think about it, I got stuck with Santana, Rivera, Jose Lopez, K-rod and Elvis Andrus all by trying to bid them up.  Kind of with Bronson Arroyo, too but I'll take him for a dollar.

Cuddyer and Hawpe will be pretty good. The latter is totally streaky. Ellsbury is in a Boston lineup, so I'm sure he'll turn out just fine.

I thought maybe I overpaid for Ellsbury for a few dollars, but I didn't have to worry about steals after that, really. And I made a point to wait extremely long to get the rest of my OF, because I agree with Will, they could easily combine for 55 HR and 190 RBI and .280 AVG. :shrug

I'm still kinda shocked no one bet after I put down $35 for Halladay. Somehow Carpenter went for $37 after that. That was due to a computer drafting, right?

pollo's infield is pretty awesome, but that outfield is kind of dicey. Ibanez is 37-years-old. Beltran and Werth are in their early-to-mid thirties and extremely injury-prone. Lind is a stud, but it would have been nice if you drafted someone else who wasn't ancient or an injury risk.

Pitching is always dicey. Investing too much in pitching, outside of the top five, is stupid - and even then it doesn't pan out ALL THE TIME. I've been playing fantasy baseball forever, and the easiest way to end up with a team that sucks is spend a lot or draft high on pitching.

Total crapshoot. Arms burn out, injuries happen, etc.

Also, by the end of the season, we'll be talking about ten to fifteen kids nobody even mentioned in the beginning of the year that you can claim off waivers. ERAs are so bad in the first half that you can usually wait it out for the waiver fodder to kick in.

I'm happy with my outfield, it's my pitching that I'm worried about.

I had to overpay for Cain after I was outbid for Josh Johnson. I'm not happy about that.

Still, I like what Nolasco's been doing in spring, he should be this year's Josh Johnson if all goes well.

Unlike imaginary people that *might* exist in real life, the people in this draft were people I interact with somewhat on the regular. So, ya know, I had to tone down douchebag mode a lil bit. But if this was Sanjuro I would have definitely bid up every Red Sock as much as I could.

They had an emergency hearing today because the bitch is running out of money and wants her $1 million a month. She spends $43k a month on make-up and owns something like 7 houses and one is only used for laundry.

The plus side to this is that due to this stupidity the team has been passing up signing some players, which means they will suck this year and the LA thug fans will jump on the Angels bandwagon.

You can write the Dodgers out of the NL West this year :D

Fantasy baseball in and of itself is interesting to me; adding the wrinkle of an auction draft is just icing on the cake.  No need to change the flavor of the cake, so to speak.

I couldn't do a lot of money right now- maybe $20 or so.  About to move in a month and that costs a shit ton of money.

$20 and I think we should have a break down like so

Winner gets 50% of the pot
runner up gets 25%
3rd and 4th split the rest

That way if we have 12 people at 20 each it breaks down to

Winner gets $120
Second gets $60
3rd and 4th each get $30

Daniel Murphy being injured before the season is a bad thing?

Really?

Well, for most teams no, it would be awesome.  But then when you're the Mets I guess you have to ask the question "who do we have to play 1b until he gets healthy" so there you go.

Also, how long until Jason Bay goes down for the season do you think?

For some reason I though Jacobs had put up better stats than Murphy last year.

And Bay will be good this year. I think next year is the year he absolutely collapses.

I'm gonna try and watch the Mariners season opener Tuesday morning in Tokyo... I'm sure I'll find a place airing it.

Got awesome tickets for the Nationals/Phillies game on April 8th. I was hoping they would make Marquis the Opening Day starter, so I could see the best pitcher on the staff - John Lannan - throw off the mound. But, alas, Lannan has been named the Opening Day starter, so I'm stuck with Marquis. Here's hoping the Nats can score more than the 5-run deficit Marquis will lob over the plate.

Only game I'm going to this year is Giants at Padres on September 12th. Can't wait though.
