Returning from his first trip to the disabled list, Strasburg turned in the worst start of his sometimes-spectacular rookie season, allowing a career-high six earned runs in a career-low 4 1/3 innings Tuesday night, and his Washington Nationals lost to the Florida Marlins 8-2.

I'm not too concerned about Strasburg coming back from injury. He's young, the doctor will be the same that handled Zimmermann, the organization has dealt with the rehab before, etc.

It just sucks. Because I really thought 2011, with Zimmermann/Strasburg, was the start of something positive. And if they could call up Harper in 2012, maybe make a push. That kind of pushes that timetable back.

Really bummed for baseball fans about Strasburg.

The shitty thing about Tommy John is although pitchers do come back, it usually takes until the next year after for them to be effective again.  So 2013 might be a more realistic view, and that puts it into perspective because 2013 is a long damn way away, anything could happen...

Sucks, you'd hate for Strasburg to become one of those stories like Fidrych who had a badass rookie season and was never heard from again.

What's awesome is that since he and Santana are pitching in the same spot in the rotation, you can compare them after each start!

Santana 7.0 IP 8H 4R 4ER 1BB 4K 1.19 WHIP 3.02 ERA
Hudson 7.0 IP 6H 1R 1ER 1BB 13K 1.09 WHIP 2.24 ERA

:teehee

Also, awesome fact not related by those stats:  12 of Huddy's 13 k last night were swing and miss.  His stuff is JUST.THAT.FILTHY.

After playing like doodoo for the past few weeks, the Rangers managed to grind out 2 tough wins in a row against the Yankees to put together a nice little 4 game win streak. Maybe they can avoid getting swept in the first round. One can only dream.

It's FJM Day on Deadspin and it's glorious.

http://deadspin.com/5644385/lets-welcome-special-guest-bill-conlin-as-he-helps-me-criticize-bill-conlin

Quote
This is the final year of the free-agent contract GM Pat Gillick gave him in 2008. He will make $6.5 million as history's highest-paid 47-year-old ballplayer. It seems unlikely the Phillies would offer him anything close to that. Clubs were not lined up to sign him after the 2008 season, so the contract appeared to be more out of reward than urgency. Despite the incessant bleating of the forum posters and commenters, the contract has turned out to be a steal. Approaching the season's midpoint, Moyer's return has been a 21-16 record. At today's obscene rates for starting pitching, he represents a tremendous bargain.

Junior: Let's play a game: Every time you mention wins, Bill Gates will donate 50 cents to malaria research.

Bill Conlin: That's very funny —

Junior: Oh wait you just bankrupted Bill Gates are you happy? God. Bill Conlin just eliminated malaria from the face of the earth because he cited wins so goddamn much.

By comparison, Mets ace Johan Santana will earn $39 million over the same period for an 18-14 record. Is there even an argument?

Junior: That's great. That's really fucking great. This is a perfect example of why wins should be flushed down the stat-toilet along with toilet paper made of batting average and used condoms filled with RBIs.

Look, Nolan Ryan is hilariously, abominably overrated (second-highest voting percentage ever for the Hall of Fame, are you shitting me?), but he was Abbey Road to Moyer's Oasis' Heathen Chemistry (1.2 on Pitchfork hahahahahaha [Abbey Road would have gotten like at least a 6.3 on Pitchfork]).

Yeah, it's not looking good.  We forgot how to win, I guess.  I mean, we could still pull it out; we just have to be better than the Pads and Rockies down the stretch but seeing as how instilling a sense of urgency into his players has never been Bobby's thing, yeah we're probably done for.  Honestly, that's probably a fitting way for him to go out- failing to reach the post-season with an incredibly talented young team because he won't get anyone fired up.

Kasten left because he knows the Lerners aren't going to spend any money this winter, and he's grown tired of begging them to increase payroll. He's not popular in Washington whatsoever, and never endeared himself to the now dwindling fanbase, but I can't fault him for leaving. He left the team in better shape than when we received it - which was whatever remains were left from when Omar Minaya thoroughly raped its corpse.
