SE doesn't actually disband sound team
« on: March 03, 2010, 12:21:25 AM »
EDIT: This was a false rumor, apparently.

http://www.squareenixmusic.com/musicnews2.php?subaction=showfull&id=1267549876&archive=&start_from=&ucat=2&

They have apparently decided to outsource all their music (and sound?) from now on.  As someone who's been a fan of Square/SE games' music since the original FF, this truly marks the end of an era.  RIP 1984?-2009.  If Hamauzu starts a new studio I hope he brings some of his frequent collaborators (i.e. Nakano, Yamazaki & Suzuki) with him.

Makes sense.  After Hamauzu left they didn't really have anyone who could score really big budget titles for them so they were going to be forced to hire freelancers most of the time anyhow.  This just means their DS sound squad will be freelanced instead of inhouse.

Apparently Hamauzu leaving was an effect of the decision, rather than a cause.

This is fucking bizarre. Why would you not have an internal sound team when you are the biggest RPG producer in Japan, maybe the world? What next? Are they gonna outsource their graphics and character design too?

anyone can draw a belt and a zipper, so sure, why not

There've been a lot of Square/SE games with outsourced character design, actually.  Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross for example.

They should outsource character designs more often then.

When most of the great composers have gone freelance you are just hurting your games by limiting the soundtracks to inhouse staff imo.

Has Uematsu done anything at all for SE since he went freelance?

He's doing FF14.  He did a few other odds and ends for them (Lord of Vermilion, some contributions to Hanjuku Hero 4).

I always liked Sekito's collaborations with Ito better than his own work (or Ito's for that matter).  So my selfish desire is for more of that.

That is pretty good. But, I think TLR trumps it. At least it plays good, unlike that... chibi thing.

He composed the main track of FFXII.

A totally linear, limited game can still give you the feeling of being in a large environment with the right visual design.  The physical layout of a dungeon in a game like this doesn't really matter that much.

I do wonder if people would fixate on this as much if there weren't always a mini-map on the screen making it blatant.

Maybe they could outsource FF15 to some western dev.
Mass Fantasy? Final Effect?

Well, Bioware certainly has the "linear corridors" down.

I would allow this for one entry just to see the massive meltdowns and the chance that it'll be better

The best thing about Last Remnant was the soundtrack. It was indeed pretty awesome.
