Would a 16-20 hour trip traumatize a cat for life?

Weighing the options here, we're moving far away and I'm trying to decide on whether we should try to take our cat with us, or just try and find a new home for her here instead of dragging her along on at least three flights. May sound like a stupid concern since she's just a bloody cat, but she's part of the family damn it. I'm starting to think the second option would be better for the cat though, since she gets freaked out enough by just going in the pet carrier to the vet across the street. The flipside is that she would have a pretty awesome environment where we're going, tons of hunting grounds. Although she'd probably be taken by an owl or something.

She's a bit of both. That's actually my biggest concern about finding a new home, if they force her to be inside all the time she might as well be put down.

If you contact your vet, I'm pretty sure they have some kind of drug they can dose the cat with to keep it calm for (well some of, anyways) the trip.

My sis had a cat that would go into literal seizures when you'd put him into a carry case, and I remember her using something the vet gave her to keep this from happening when he needed to go somewhere.

Yes, the vet will have pills to calm the cat and she should be OK.  I believe there is a little risk with sedatives and altitude, but maybe there are varying degrees of sedation.

If it were my cat I'd definitely take her, even if I can't use sedatives.  At least you know once the trip is over she'll have a good home with you and I suspect the only lingering effect will be her not liking the pet carrier - which is already the case.

There are a few ways to do it - ship the animal separately, take her with you as baggage in the cargo hold, or some airlines let you take animals in the cabin.

this might sound stupid, but someone relocated back to Hong kong and they sent their dogs via some shipping service specifically designed not to stress out pets.... seemed a bit odd to me, i can try and get the details if you want that as an option? though then the cat might be kidnapped by Nigerian bandits.... and there's the obvious time delay in pick up/delivery and i suppose

That's pretty much what happened, actually. Now we can come and go as we please without having to deal with immigration forms and moody border officers, so we figured it would be cool to try Sweden for a while. I have a business going over there, and the kid needs to get to know her Swedish family. I'll regret it when winter hits, I'm sure.

For sure, but we're moving just as Spring hits, so it will get progressively more pleasant, and that far north you get really nice, mild summers with 24 hours of sunlight.

And then the 9 months of winter start.  One of the happiest moments of my life was leaving out of Sweden on a record cold February day, and land to a warm summer drizzle in Sydney.

Yeah, it's real promising. On the other hand, the summer we spent there in 2006 was the best summer in decades, so I guess it evens itself out. Not much comfort in February, though.

My dad's side of the family is from Karlshamn so I looked around the south pretty much between Copenhagen and Karlskrona.  My cousin sent me pics the other day from Karlshamn and there is tons and tons of snow.

We actually use alcofill paint, so we can have games in temperatures down to 5 degrees. Not that people are flocking to play paintball in the winter, though. I want to have some 24 hour games this summer since it never gets dark.

I saw a bit of Kristianstad when we went to visit my stepsister in Lund.  We also went to the island Hano, so maybe went through Kristianstad on the way to the departure point, but I can't remember where the boat departed from.

We didn't go to Helsingborg, but I think the train out of Copenhagen has a stopover in Helsingborg?  So I just saw it in passing.
