Looks pretty generic, but it's a fantasy RPG so I'll probably play it at some point.

I read it being compared to Gauntlet style games.  I'm not really interested in this one, but between this and that changed version of The Grinder (from developers of GOTF The Conduit), it's nice to see some Gauntlet style games making a return...if only some of them looked good.

There were a bunch of those types of games on the PS2 and had great co-op.  This gen there was that shitty looking launch PS3 game, those Marvel Ultimate games, and now these two I think.

You'd think the casualty rate would be pretty high for elvish warriors who battle in leather straps that only protect their private areas.

Hey, its another IP that Bethesda gleaned from Interplay, awesome!

and I wanted to play Hei$t, if only to see how it turned out.  If Codemasters felt content never releasing it, I might begin to worry about this new project of theirs.

Tried it on PC for 10 minutes. Immediately uninstalled. Seemed god damn awful.

It's not a good idea to model your action slash game on a Gears of War style game. It has a cover system for the bow chick which just kind of seemed laughable. It controlled like crap. It looked like crap. The story (or what little I saw of it) seemed like crap. Felt like a budget game.

But that was my impression after literally only 10 or 15 mintues of play. Maybe it gets better after that but it certainly gave me no interest to find out.

I wanna try the co-op before completely writing it up, but yeah it seems pretty awful.

So when are developers going to realize that not every game needs to be [or should be] full-priced?

For what its worth Gabe seems to like it. So don't take my 15 minute thoughts as gospel.

Quote
Tycho and I have been playing through L.A. Noire here at the office. Initially we were both blown away by the technology and the story. After wrapping up the homicide desk and moving up to Vice I was getting a bit bored. I began to look at the game much like a real detective might look at a desk full of open cases and imagine the hours he will need to spend interviewing lying assholes. I have to say this Rockstar game kept me playing much longer than any other but eventually I got tired and gave up, just like I did with all their previous titles. It feels like I am given an incredible open world and then asked to do the same thing over and over again. Oh well, I still consider it a great game and I feel like it was worth my time and money.
The only reason I mention that is I think it might have something to do with why I like Hunted: Demon’s Forge so much. I think it’s functioning as a sort of palette cleanser. It’s a light game that goes down easy and doesn’t leave any after taste. The combat is fun, I like the way they handle loot, the magic system is well designed, and it’s occasionally very funny. Visually Hunted looks good pretty much all the time and actually looks great every once in a while. It’s got some clever puzzles and a ton of hidden areas to find and explore.
I’m playing it by myself so I can’t talk much about the co-op side of it. Tycho and I gave split screen a try here in the office and found the game too busy to really play in such a small window. I will say that even with the A.I. partner the ways the game lets you work together in combat are really fun. Having the warrior send all the enemies around him up into the air with a spell and then picking them off with the archer is a real treat. I imagine this stuff is even cooler when it’s your friend helping you out rater than a computer.
I’m not a game reviewer so I’m not going to try and pin some kind of score on it. I’ll say that after playing the game for a couple of days now I like it and I want to keep playing it.

Quote from: Joystiq
And, ultimately, one of Hunted: The Demon Forge's biggest strengths is also its biggest weakness -- there's just not much there. Yes, its constituent components are polished and impeccably streamlined, but after a few hours, there aren't any surprises in store. Without a compelling narrative to pull you along, it's really a toss-up as to whether the game's rewarding sense of progression and thoughtful cooperative combat is going to be enough to bring you to the end of its 14-or-so-hour campaign. The odds of you replaying through the game in Adventure+ mode or dabbling in the arena-building Crucible mode are slimmer still.

Despite the game's flaws, that handful of brilliantly executed ideas makes Hunted a difficult game to ignore. Role-playing/shooter hybrids aren't a new invention by any stretch of the imagination, but most of those hybrids simply borrow and juxtapose the best elements of their amalgamated genres. For better and worse, Hunted eschews those benchmark components, creating a unique, exciting and promising genre of its own design.  3.5/5
