i stole this summary from wikipedia

Quote
Infinite Space is a science fiction role-playing video game that allows the player to design and control a spaceship. The player can customize the ship with over 150 different design models, along with over 150 possible crewmembers.[6]  After designing a ship, the player can explore an expansive game world with a story spanning two galaxies. Characters seen in the game will be displayed in 2D, while ships, exploration, and battles will all be in 3D.[7]
Concept art of a spaceship in Infinite Space.

The player navigates the ship using the Nintendo DS touchscreen by first choosing a destination, then engaging the engines to move towards that destination. Spaceship battles occur in real-time, with attacks utilizing a "command gauge" feature.[6] As the command gauge builds up, the player can use it to perform attacks against an enemy ship. The rate at which the command gauge fills depends on the crew of the ship, so a more skilled crew will increase the capabilities of a ship. When the player boards an enemy ship, the player takes control of their character to fight through the ship.[7]

I'm kinda interested in this, but I've been off of RPG's for years.  But the whole Star Trek-esque ship commanding sounds cool as hell, and I've dug Platinum's games very much so far.

you know i see a 9 but then i read about battles that doesn't make sense and stuff you equip that don't tell you anything about them and he spents the last word going about HOW AWESOME the game is it,which is usualy an alarm that the game is really bad because otherwise you would talk about what make the game awesome in the first place

The RPGFan review seems to be written by someone who is willing to deal with the game's idiosyncrasies, though. I mean, come on, this is a hardcore, over-engineered handheld JRPG-if you're buying it and not expecting it to have some quirks then you're deluded.

Sounds like Frag's kinda game, lol.  I'll probably give it a whirl while I sit on my thumbs waiting for Strange Journey to come out.

I put in about 45 minutes, got to the first space station. It's kind of talky, but I get the feeling that'll subside. There's a currency called FAP that made me LOL.

Basically, combat is a kind of rock/paper/scissors thing, but with a lot of mitigating factors that look they'll get even crazier as you advance. I started getting points for things that I don;t even what they're for. This is a big game. If you're a spreadsheet gamer or a strategey nerd or a gaming nerd with a fetish for rule books and atmosphere, hop in.

The setting is more Star Trek or BSG than Star Wars.

Sounds really good, is there any planetary surface exploration in this? Is it more traditional RPG or space sim?

Yeah I bought a DS for this and Strange Journuu~ . Sadly no one around here is carrying the game so I had to order it off Amazon, so I probably won't get to play Infinite Space until next week.

My understanding of the customization/combat from reviews is that it is pretty complex at first, but as you understand how the bits fit together the game flows a lot better. I'm sorta worried about this whole "visual novel" phrase I keep seeing dropped in some reviews but I'm hoping the story isn't too heavy handed, or, barring that, actually interesting (though the starting notion of a 16 year older given a spaceship by a Tits McGee animu character is not promising, I am holding off judging the game entirely on that).

okay i played up to the first hour/galaxy and this thing it's bad, really bad,in case you care that much i'm going to be somewhat spoilerish tough there is really nothing special to see here

- so it starts out with an animu opening, who cares! give me the game

- by the way the game is stylus only which makes no sense considering you only use the stylus to select
stuff from menu's

- the game switch to what looks like a mysterious pirate captain or something

- mysterious pirate captain is being chased by some guys giving the game the chance to start a battle tutorial

- battle are real time and work like this,on the left you have a bar that recharge with time, this bar is divided in three segments (green, yellow and red) and on the top a bar that indicates the distance between you and your opponent,on the bottom screen you have 5 buttons, one makes you go forward and another makes you go backward, the closer you are to your opponent, the bigger your accuracy, the other three issues more concrete action and consume the segmented bar when used, the first one is a normal attack, the second is a heavier attack (it consume 2 bar segments but you attack 3 times where you would otherwise attack only 2 times by issuing the normal attack twice) the last one let you dodge heavy attack but make you more susceptible to normal attack,i guess you unlock more option later on?

- while we are talking about battle, both you and enemy tends to miss a lot and considering you only get one attack after which you have to wait 4-5 seconds before being able to attack again,it makes for some really annoying battle

- also when you deliver the final blow, you get some technobabble voice over, you know stuff like "ENEMY POSITION BLABLABLA,LASER CHARGING BLUBLUBLU" it wouldn't surprise me if these voice over are the reason the game is big in the first place, the camera also pans around,it makes combat look more spiffy but it also makes it goes slower, you can skip all this bits by tapping on the screen but then there is no way to see how much damage you did or received and it's somewhat annoying to skip them in the first place

- okay so the tutorial is over, pirate captain is victorius, game switch to a random action girl being chased by a bunch of guys,WE'LL NEVER FORGET YOU PIRATE CAPTAIN! </salute>

- by the way,the character swear by saying grus instead of fuck which lead to amusing line like "what the grus" and "grus you!" lame attempt at censorship or lame attempt at sci-fi? you decide bore!

- okay so action girl get shot down and crashes down to the main character planet, turns out that main character can't leave the planet because the planet is ruled by a jerk who doesn't want anybody to leave the planet so he asked action girl for help

- the main character WANTS TO SEE THE SEA OF STARS and HOLDS A MYSTERIOUS ARTIFACT and HAS MYSTERIOUS HEADACHES,and it's like someone hit him with the stick of generic Jrpg character over and over and over and over and over and over

- so main character repairs action girl ship and together they sail away, but the jerk that rules main character planet is pissed off that someone was able to leave and holds the main character sister hostage! OH NOEZ!

- of course main character decide to fight back and so he sells his mysterious artifact and buy off a huge ship, the game take this chance to explain you how to buy stuff (first you have to buy a blueprint of what you want to build and then you can buy what you actualy wanted in the first place... blueprint are ultra-cheap so it's not really a problem but neverthless having to buy the option to buy something is stupid and pointless)

- game also gives you the chance to customize, every character that join (and from the look of it,a lot of character joins) can be assigned to a crew position, this supposedly improve your battle performance but it's really hard to notice any difference, there are like a gazillion of different crew position but characters just excel at one or two of them (for example action girl is good at kicking enemy ass but sucks at the rest) supposedly each character also has different special skills but i haven't been able to use a single one as the tutorial never bothered to explain

- alternatively you can buy rooms and fit them like tetris block on your ship, like crew member they should improve your ship but it's hard to notice anything different

- okay so main hero goes and attack jerk guy and there is your first boss battle,i failed twice but i pulled it off on my third try after a really annoying and long battle, the hero saves his sister and then off they go to more space adventuring!

- and then i stopped playing! why? BECAUSE THIS GAME IS JUST A BUNCH OF MENU STRUNG TOGETHERS
when you are on the world map,you just pick your destination and then just wait to reach for it (altough there is a speed up button that makes travel last 2-3 seconds so you don't have to sit around like an idiot playing spirit track) and when you reach a planet it's just a screen of a generic futuristic looking city (might i add the same screen for every city) and you decide where to go trough a menu, basicaly there is nothing to do in the game at all other than outfitting your ship to see if you can make combat any better and follow the ultra boring looking plot

I have no clue what's going on.  The battle system seems really simplistic, though.  I guess the meat of the game comes from customizing your fleet.

Finally got it in the mail and put about three hours in tonight. So far it's been smooth sailing.

Interface, feedback, presentation seem fine, IMO. It's easy to see weapon ranges (the little boxes above your ship's HP), ship distances, and target ship states. The battle system is dynamic without being complex ( I actually hope that it gets a bit more deep when fleets get bigger and presumably weapons and shields come into play).

Tapping the screen or using the shoulder button accelerates the fights and they generally move by really quick, which will be nice when I get my grind on after my DS recharges.

So far thumbs up, though I did roll my eyes a bit at the obvious space-moe sister and the hooters mcbooby lady from space that gets you off the planet. But at least it's not full of lolis and has the basic feel of an old 1980's space anime, which is what I was hoping for.

Hilarious thing is that I'd have both this and Strange Journey if I hadn't bought FF13.
