360 Slim coming?

Quote
These pictures apparently show the guts of a new model of the Xbox 360. The important bits? The fact that for the first time the console combines the CPU and the GPU in a single chip. Oh, and it's small.

The pic above shows the board in question, with the chip part of a rumoured redesign for the Xbox 360 console, testing of which has recently been completed in China. This isn't simply a new board for the existing hardware, either; it's reportedly a total redesign of the console. Think the PS3 Slim, only...for an Xbox 360.

Now, considering the source, there's every reason to be sceptical of the images, and the info. Then again, with Natal due later this year, rebooting the 360 itself to go along with it would make a lot of sense, especially if a reduction in size could come with a reduction in cost.

What do you think? Legitimate Chinese leak, ala the PS3 Slim, or just some punks pulling a stunt?

I think this is very likely.  To all the naysayers, remember when the PS3 Slim was first leaked via some pictures from China and a lot of folks were dismissing it as fake....

Himu and Particle might have made the right choice to get rid of their 360s, as now they can jump back in with the 360 Slim and be the envy of all 360 Phat owners.

Also the 360 has an ATI GPU and a PowerPC CPU. I don't think AMD would like ATI tech sitting on the same chip as AIM tech.

Well 360 is selling better than ever and i don't see omg RROD at every corner.
Besides this chipset has nothing to do with current 360 reliability.

And I'm 100% sure that you won't be seeing RROD on this unit,why?...simple,no red lights...maybe you could get ylod like on PS3...rings are not coming back :lol

I'd be down about this since I already bought my 360, but I really like the regular 360 design, excluding the concave sides. And plus, my 360 was manufactured like, two months ago. No RROD for me :D *knocks on wood*

Kosma will hit anything that moves, which is why I practice being still so often.

If there is a Tiny360 in the works (I won't strap Sony's moniker to it) I'll buy it. Especially if it has a sizable hard drive.

They need to slim down the price.  I think the Elite 360 unit should be $199 at this stage in the game, with the Arcade being either $129 or $149.

I posted this in the random talk thread, but I suppose the hard drives will snap horizontally into the top of the unit?  That's pretty much the only way they could do it, unless they're planning on launching a line of "slim-only" hard drives.  That, or the drives will all be built in and fixed.

How about this:

1)Slim drive only, but content is transferable, you get(buy) transfer kit...downsides-if you buy slim arcade, new slim drive required

2)Old drive fits,no slim drive...downsides(mostly for MS)-more expensive to produce console and drive, smaller profit

3)Slim drive, content is transferable, but old drive can be used(old drive is not incorporated into slim design, sticks out)...downsides-same as for fat 360

4)Any drive can be used...downsides-not going to happen

Personally i vote for 3

Documentation obtained by Joystiq – and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources – reveals that "USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360" will soon be a reality. The document, authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft, states that due to "increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, a 2010 Xbox 360 system update" will allow consumers to save and load game data from USB devices. The update is purportedly coming in Spring 2010.

Once the update occurs, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device. "USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than MUs (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations-such as installation of a full disc-based title." That's right, you can also store disc-based games to the USB device; however, it will require the disc to be in the tray for authentication, identical to the current functionality.

According to the document, the USB mass storage device must be at least 1GB and the system will do a compatibility check. "The system partition occupies 512 MB of space, and by default the consumer partition occupies the remainder of the device capacity, or 16 GB, whichever is smaller." Upon inserting a blank USB storage device, "consumers are offered two choices: 'Configure now' or 'Customize'." The "Configure now" option will use "the entire device capacity, up to the maximum of 512 MB plus 16 GB" meaning, regardless of the overall size of the device you're using, the Xbox will only enable 16 GB of usable, non-system storage. The "Customize" option will allow you to "preserve some pre-existing, non-console data on the device" such as music.

If you're intent on circumventing Microsoft's cutthroat hard drive pricing the Xbox 360, you can use two USB storage devices for a maximum of 32 GB of usable storage; however, the console "has a fixed limit of two external USB mass storage devices" regardless of whether they're "formatted for the Xbox 360 or not." If you fill all three USB ports on the console, only the first two to be connected will be recognized.

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/xbox-360-gaining-usb-storage-support-in-2010-update/

For me the biggest thing here are installs,on usb sticks....

Down with the discs, this is the next gen media...  :gun discs

32GB sounds like squat in today's world, but admittedly that's enough for a few game installs so cool.

I'm looking forward to backing up some saves that I would weep tears over if my hard drive broke.

First of all, I'd totally be down with buying a redesigned 360 IF they manage to make it quieter.  Now that I use headphones with my games I suppose it's not as big of an issue it was previously, but it would be nice if it ran a little quieter when we're using it for other things like Netflix.  They figured out how to make it smaller, now make it silent as well.

As for the 32GB USB storage capacity.....it's better than nothing.....I guess....but it's still a bunch of crap.  I've got a 120GB HD on my 360 and I'm finding that I can fill that thing up in no time.  I normally have a few games constantly installed but I'm always swapping them in and out. Off loading some of that DLC from uninstalled games on my HD to a cheap USB drive would be helpful though.

To lazy to make another thread

Quote
On April 6th, we will be releasing a system update over Xbox LIVE for your Xbox 360 that will allow USB flash drives to be used for storing profiles, game saves, demos and more.  I’ve been testing this feature out for a few weeks, and I have to say it’s really great. Once you take the system update on April 6th, you’ll be able to connect your USB flash drives to your console and head over to the memory section to configure your new storage device. Once you do that, the system will conduct a one time performance and integrity check to confirm the drive is working properly. You will then be able to configure how much storage to use on the device, up to 16 GB. The remaining space on the flash drive will be accessible by your PC or Mac. USB Hard drives may work, but like flash memory, you’ll only be able to use up to 16GB of space. Since performance on flash based USB storage is usually better, I highly recommend using flash based instead of spinning media like a hard drive…it’s just going to give you a MUCH better experience.

We’ve also enhanced the memory management functions, so you’ll be able to have better control on what you want to copy or move between storage devices.

A couple of geeky points:

    * You can have 2 devices connected to the console at a time, enabling up to 32GB of simultaneous storage.
    * The system won’t just configure the device once it is connected to the console. You’ll need to head to the memory area in system settings, select your USB Device, and choose from Configure Now (Format and Configure the Full Device), or Customize (you can choose how much memory you want configured for Xbox360 from the free space on the device.)

While any flash drive can be used, we are partnering with SanDisk to release an Xbox 360 branded USB flash drive in May that comes pre-configured out of the box and ready to go. I’ll provide links to those drives once they’re available. Until then, starting April 6th (when we release the system update) you can pop any flash drive over 1GB into your Xbox 360 and configure it as storage.

I hope someone makes a memory manager for the PC. Similar to the WBFS format that hacked Wiis use for USB Loaders.

I also hope this means we can start hex-editing our saves and profiles now. So I can unlock some glitched achievements.
