ILM did the same motion capture effects work Avatar did, but outside in daylight instead of in a bluescreen soundstage.

LOTR?  Really?  Joke?  I loooooooooooooooooooove all 3 movies with all my fat heart.  But the effects have aged terribly.

And Davy Jones most definitely.

I just don't like the texture work done on Avatar in comparison, but the animation seems more realistic than the work done on Pirates.

I put all three Pirates in there as the skeleton stuff in Black Pearl was practice for Davy Jones. AND it still looks good, especially in HD.

Everyone needs to vote Avatar, since this thread is obviously Manabyte fishing for validation of his George Lucas hero-worship.

My real vote goes to Davy Jones, but I cast my vote for Benjamin Button knowing it wouldn't get any.  But it deserves a mention, some of the aging and blending of the faces they did was truly astounding.

I don't see how anyone can deny Avatar wins by a mile.

Only a few aspects of LOTR have aged poorly imo, like the bridge crumbling in FOTR; and some always looked shitty, like Legolas on the elephant. Overall it looks great, Gollum still looks great, etc. Bring on the blu ray

Avatar's art makes poor use of the CGI though.  Maybe it has the most technically advanced render motion-capture techniques but who gives a fuck?  Crazy stuff like huge elephants and tentacle noses are what impresses people about CGI.  A flattened nose bridge and blue skin isn't that exciting in comparison.  My problem with Avatar was that there was so little action and so much exposition that you got tired of the facial sfx not long after you got tired of the story.

Pirates annihilates Avatar, which wasn't anything groundbreaking special effects-wise. The real technology was the digital 3D process that was used for filming.

here's two hi res character pics for comparison

Pirates

Avatar
http://images2.fanpop.com/image/photos/9300000/Avatar-avatar-movie-9388255-2560-1600.jpg

For me Davy Jones edges ahead slightly. As a whole, he feels a little more tangible than Jake or Neytiri.

The hair work in Avatar is amazing though - that and the bamboo bow Jake is holding are the two most tangible aspects of that shot. Also the pores on Jake's chest are really well done. It's just that their facial features, like nose, eyes and mouth leave a little to be desired. To my eyes anyway.

very, very close. you can swing either way, I guess.

The motion capture CGI also is an improvement over Jones. ILM definitely took a step forward with it.

THAT BEING SAID, if we're talking general art design, Avatar falls near the bottom of the list of films in the poll.

I don't think the hair is very impressive. It looks really flat.

I vote Pirates. The natural sunlight works so fucking well in those movies, and I just love looking at Davy's animated mug.

Speaking of Pirates, does anyone here really enjoy the third movie? I only found the first and second to be outstanding, while the third was severely lacking, imo. What they did with the witch-lady was a stupid plot decision.

POTC3 is one of the most disappointing summer blockbusters I've seen. I was so hyped, especially after losing all interest in Spider Man 3. Wound up liking Spider Man 3 and hating POTC3

The motion capture CGI also is an improvement over Jones. ILM definitely took a step forward with it.

The motion capture tech Digital Domain used on Avatar is actually no different that what ILM used in Pirates or Zemeckis has been using for the past six years. Just because Cameron has been living in a submarine at the bottom of the ocean since 1997 he hypes up his shit like the rest of the effects world doesn't exist.

As Willco said, the big advancement was filming it in 3D.

From what I've seen, the worst of that bunch is Neo and digital Yoda. :lol

Yea, the Na'vi looked rather believable most of the time. The first pic in Mana's post is not impressive, and while Davey definitely is...the Na'Vi look "realer." From the sweat on their skin to the hair to the sexually appealing life in their eyes
